What really tipped the balance for me was I have had to travel to London for many years to either do photography or attending meetings for the last 20 yrs at the MoD Main building. I noticed as the congestion zone was introduced my snooty nose was less black the following day. Due to be a Critical Worker during the CoVid lockdown I still had to visit London & really noticed due to no cars how clean the air was. This was the tripping point & decided an Electric car was my next car due to be changed in 2021. Since then London has effectively banned non BEV cars & you see mostly BEV & BEV vans in central London. Although I retired last January I still visit London from Hamshire regularly for photography etc & how much better the air quality is.

I visited the UK from NZ in June and spent 5 weeks touring from Cornwall to Inverness. Apart from the 5 lane roundabouts! we loved every minute. To end the trip we spent 2 days in London and I agree, there didn't seem to us to be any noticeable pollution, the tour bus we were in was an ev, and so were most of the trad' black London taxis. Quite impressed, and nothing comparable to when I was a kid visiting the Tower in the mid 1950s

This may be a storm in a teacup anyway, to explain, I live in NZ and have owned an ev for over 2 years, simply because it is so much cheaper to run, I charge from home, and it has a 7 year warranty. With our business vehicles however it is a different matter -- no ev alternatives for our Ranger pick ups, and no ev alternatives for our LDV delivery vans. To my mind these areas are more important for our future than our family car. When ev versions do arrive, we will be able to refuel the vehicles with NZ made electrons, and therefor reduce our reliance on overseas energy supplies. In our business, we chalk up a lot more k's (miles), and imported diesel costs a fortune here. The sooner we have a suitable cost of ownership ev choice the better, and it will definitely happen well before 2035. In China, these type of vehicles are already available right now. We are in theory in a better situation than the UK, as there are no tariffs and we are close to China geographically as well, which by the way is our major trading partner, which helps.

Just to be clear, I've been an EV owner since 2019, I currently have two EVs and I'm perfectly happy with them but I'm going to play Devil's advocate. The reason ICE owners don't want us to buy EVs is because if enough of us do it, ICE vehicles will become niche, more expensive, with fewer choices. Also, fuel will not be as easily available. The real fear is that they will end up with no choice. Well, that's my take, I may be wrong.

Listening to a lot of the arguments I am not that sure that many of the vocal anti-EV people even care that much about cars and would have no practical issue owning /driving an EV, their real outrage is at the thought of the government telling them what they can and can't do. If it weren't EV they would probably be raging about something else. The people with genuine concerns such as having nowhere to charge often aren't vocally anti-EV, rather they just express their concerns about how EV could be made to work for them.

@@paulweston1106 for the foreseeable future I don’t want, full stop. Parity in fuel cost, range and fuelling convenience is the start point. Depreciation at the moment is a huge negative. There are issues of fire safety in terms of parking underground, car and buildings insurance, ferries etc that need time to become clearer. I also object to government telling me what I can and can’t do directly or indirectly in terms of vehicle choice, punitive rules about who can drive or park where or how much it’s going to cost me etc. I have no objection to a bit of encouragement but don’t tell us what to do! Your question: I think the fear is that an EV will be forced on them rather than be their choice, particularly if they cannot home charge. @ Quite right. I knew when I bought it that new prices would fall. For us, a different car was a necessity so I chose to go full EV, from a diesel Pogo 607, in March ‘22. Tried a smaller car but insufficient space, so bought this model. No range anxiety, it’s been ultra reliable and all this year It has been charged either from a 7kW home charger or (occasionally) less using the granny charger. Next year, solar charging the car will account for more savings (not much more as it is already remarkably cost-efficient).

@@oliver90owner Same for me....But I also calculated that buying an ICE would cost me every year 6000 euro MORE to run the car (energy prices, road taxes , maintenance for 30000 km/year). This means that deprecation is irrelevant because in 10 years I saved the whole investment in the EV back in lower running costs. (More explicit...I made my first calculations, in that year WITH government benefits, in 2013. Buying a leaf saved me in 8 years (yes not full ev driving due to lack of infra structure in those days...payed for that inconvinience with lower taxes) 60000 euro. This is the comparing costs if I had bought in that year a next new ICE car same sized as that leaf. Calculated as a good busines man in TCO of coarse (which includes tax differences) This 60000 , yes indeed saved up, bought me my ioniq 5. In next 10 years I have again those 60000 saved (or more). But after 10 years I expect that (corrected for inflation) my next EV will be much cheaper.

We changed our car a year ago and could not afford an EV that met our needs, so we went down the hybrid route again with a Toyota. A year on and prices have come down, batteries, charging stations and range are improved and I am better eductated too! Will be another 2 or 3 years before we are likely to start seriously thinking about another car, but an EV will definitely be the most likely result. Thanks for your informative videos.

The ban for vanilla-ICE is set to 2030, the consultation underway is about how the automakers can meet the ZEV mandate and what hybrid vehicles (phevs, revs or hevs, most likely revs) will be allowed to be sold betrween 2030 and 2035. On the ZEV mandate Labour have stated they will not remove the mandate as it's already primary legilsation and will require an act of parliment to disolve the policy. However, they are willing to tweak the underlying rules, probably change the level of conversions (from low CO2 credit's of hybrids to ZEV credits) allowed and relax the rules around borrowing from future year sales, so that planned sales from nearer 2030 can called down upon now. Possibly also tweaking the penalty levels to be phased-in more softly in the mandates early years.

I would suggest an ICE permit scheme, similar to my work car scheme is. You are expected to have an EV unless can show why not practical. So for people that have drives, can fit a home charger then expected to get an EV and people where cannot charge at home or not practical for other reasons and can show why then can get an ICE car. Car dealers have been pushing EV as last year when was shopping then toured, VW, Mazda, Volvo, Hyundai, Jag, Nissan, Renault and all tried to interest me in EV so the sales people are trying to sell EV initially. Simple explanation that live in first floor flat with parking bay other side of a road and they understood that EV just not practical for me. Checking Census in UK then a growing number of people living in flats which less likely to have home charging capability so this is a potentially growing issue, not an issue that will sort itself out. I would have an EV if was practical Range - with a Model Y LR then could 90-95% of journeys could reach out and back on full charge and when I have been upto scotland then whenever stopped would ALWAYS have been able to get on a charger at the services that stopped at. I have no issue with range. Repairability - Authorised Tesla Repair Centre 30 min in car from me. - No Problem Cost - last car was Audi A5 Sportback Edition 1 - previous to that was Golf GTI and Passat GT Estate (at same time) that not an issue. Charging - where becomes and issue - Tesco 11kw chargers with 3 hour limit www.smarthomecharge.co.uk/vehicles/tesla/model-y-long-range/ says 10 hours to fully charge the Model Y LR on 7Kw charger so a few journeys and leave the car there. 10 min walk home and back each time and 44p a unit Or supercharger at 79p (65p with subscription) where about a 30 min wait. For car is drive through Tesco Petrol Station on way out after shopping and 5 mins stop whilst pop in card, then fuel up and drive off. twice a week so if none available do next time. What needs to happen is sort out so home charging is available to all, as in domestic rate overnight charging where your car is parked.

Hi Dave, greetings from Oxford. Brave video! I got my BEV in 2019, very happy with my decision. However I am fortunate enough to live in a bungalow with a driveway and charging at home is easy for me. At present there is an inherent inequality to BEV adoption because many people do not have the ability to charge at home; perhaps they rent their home and their landlord will not agree to install a charger, perhaps they have complicated parking for their car away from their home. This inequality needs to be addressed. Combustion cars are more equitable at present, because irrespective of where you live, you have the same access to the fueling infrastructure. Inequality will always produce some level of resentment.

A friend bought a Tesla few months earlier. He saw my BMW i3 and asked me a lot of quastions about EVs, the cost, about charging etc. He rents, he parks at the street and doesn't have any dedicated parking spot. he makes 200 miles every week. His old diesel needed about 13 liters of fuel every week, around £27. We checked with my BMW how much energy it needs (not as efficient as a Tesla) and checked the prices of the chargers in the area. He decided to buy that used Tesla and now, in the wrost conditions, in the winter and preheating the car before he gets in, he needs maximum 55-60Kwh and he ussually charges at a Tesla supercharger at 42p/Kwh once every week and it costs him £20-25. Every second Saturday he parks at my home, we go for beers or a dinner with our wives, they sleep at my home and he adds 10-20 Kwh at 6p/Kwh, so he cuts the cost even more. So, he paid a lot of money to buy a 4 years old car but he got rid of his old diesel and he has a very nice casr with features that his old diesel didn't have. He wanted to replace it anyway, so he had to spend that money even if it was an ICE car. Now he saves £5 every week from fuel, and he saves even more £3-500 every year just from servise, oil changes, filters etc. He wants to rent another house, with a driveway, to charge at home. He will save at least £20 every week.

ICE vehicles shouldn’t be banned but restricted from being used in certain situations to reduce city vehicle pollution. EV power at this stage cannot replace ICE tow vehicles, trucks, agricultural equipment, military vehicles and excavation machinery without substantial inconvenience. In remote areas where charging infrastructure is non existent fuel must be carried. The circumstances under which many of these vehicles operate require 24 hour non stop operation which may justify hydrogen power such as JCB are trialling. Whatever happens going forward EV growth will impact on ICE fuel prices which will rise as volumes reduce and infrastructure changes to accommodate EV charging. Additionally governments will need to add taxes to EV’s somehow to replace the lost taxes currently on ICE fuel.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought that the Great Smog of 1952 was caused by everyone having coal fires to heat their offices and homes - the avaregae person in London in the 1950’s couldn’t afford to buy a car back then. It was sulphur particles from burning coal trapped low in the atmosphere by a high pressure area over the Thames basin that made the air toxic to breath. This was why smokeless zones were introduced into all UK cities and towns. It was before my time - I’m a 1956 baby that is an EV driver and a modern diesel owner too.

Hi, yes, I agree with you about the British city smogs of the 1950’s - they were mainly caused by burning coal. I think Dave was using this as an example, rather than a definitive reason. More recently we have seen similar air pollution issues in less developed countries, I believe it was Deli in India in 2024 where people were asked to stay inside and schools were closed due to excessive air pollution - and that was a combination of local industries and vehicle fumes.

Anybody who wants to drive an ICE car after 2030 can do so. They will simply not be able to drive a new one. As most cars have a workable life expectancy of about 15 years, there will still be drivable ICE cars on the road in 2045 and beyond. Most of the folk that are so adamant about ICE car driving and ownership will be pretty old by then and, without a very good pension, will not be able to afford to drive one. VED is a mixture of taxation and social policy, such older cars tend to be purchased and run by those for whom the tax take already represents a major percentage of their income. If the tax on older cars is increased it will disproportionately impact those less well off within society. However, at the same time these older cars are worsening the country's population health and increasing the tax burden by increasing demands placed on the NHS. A balance needs to be struck between disincentivising purchasing or removing older, polluting, cars from the roads and not placing the burden for such on those least able to afford the impact. Perhaps a measure to acheive such is rather than increasing taxation on the older cars that instead to progressively tighten the MOT emission rules to automatically fail vehicles producing above a limit defined. If this is done progressively overtime, particularly once 2nd/3rd hand EV's stock levels increase, then both the lower costs of running an EV and the tightening rules on emissions will drive out the more polluting ICE vehicles. If this is then coupled with an ICE car scrappage scheme that replaces an old car with EVs targetting those less able to afford to purchase a replacement used car, then it will have greater impact than just increasing VED alone.

For anyone who does less than 50 miles a day a charger plugged into a standard 3-pin socket will be enough to top up every day so even installing smart chargers wouldn't guarantee a higher tax on EV charging. It is much more likely that we will see some form of per-mile taxation to replace lost fuel duty. Per-mile road pricing would be perceived to be a fairer approach and would be like the current fuel duty system which effectively collects more tax the more you drive. I don't doubt for one minute that driving an EV will become more expensive if/when ICE really starts to get phased out.

They are in an adapt or die situation. The problem too many legacy manufacturers have is that they have just taken existing models and shoved EV workings into them when they should have really been developing specific EV platforms. They have also continued to push their ICE offerings, presumably because this is more profitable for them. I personally agree that the fines should be scrapped but only on the understanding that 2030 is the hard date for ICE sales and that any manufacturer with stock at that point won't be able to sell them in the UK. It would give them the certainty they need without having to throw money at fines. Legacy auto would have to make a choice, they either comply or withdraw from the UK. Setting the date at 2030 wouldn't really give any new government that could be elected in 2029 enough time to overturn the ban, and manufacturers would be committed at that point.

No, the fines are necessary. Some legacy automakers made 'compliance cars' which their sales teams did everything to avoid selling. The executives responsible need to go, and that requires shareholders to sack them. The auto industry has a long history of failing. The Ford Pinto design flaw was not recalled because Ford calculated lawsuits would cost less than the recall. Luckily judges awarded huge damages to punish Ford and warn industry. Ford didn't go broke. VW cheated emission tests and got heavily fined. VW did not go broke.

It does look to be an issue for some cars at least. Take a look at a 3-year-old Peugeot model on used car sites. When new, the EV version is around £8k more than the ICE version, at 3 years they have pretty much reached price parity. This is going to be good news for people buying in the secondhand market but not so much for the first owner who has paid more and lost more.

For me it's pretty much the reducing the exhaust pipe pollution that sells it. I bought in 2022 (when the car markets economics were out of the ordinary) as my previous ICE car kicked the bucket that year, so I'm probably slightly down money wise (all in) v buying an ICE at that time. If I decide to change next Sept (2025), I'd do much better on the economics. Charging at home has been way more convenient than going to a fuel station (its done whilst I am asleep). Occasional charging at public chargeponts has never incurred any additional time as it has always been done whilst I was doing something else that I would have been doing anyway. The driving experience is much more pleasant in the EV than in my previous ICE cars.

I agree with alot of these points. But the iPhone was a bad example. Strangely enough the iphone is more expensive now than it was at launch. It was 499usd, which today would be about 750 usd. Today the latest iPhone starts at 799 and goes up to about 1200+ usd. I used usd as the iphone was first released there. The iphone was actually cheaper than the then current top and most popular "smart phones" of the time. The Nokia N95 which stated at 770usd, (there was a more expensive 8gb model avalible). So the iphoen was a third cheaper (or 250 usd) than its compitition it was aimed at. The other compitition was the blackberry bold 9700, its hard to find a retail price for that as it seems you could only get it in america on a 24 months contract with a 200usd down payments. So id say it was more expensive than the nokia. Blackberry was hiding thr 9700s actuall price. But if we calculate for the cost of money over time that 200 usd down payment in 2010 is about 280 usd today. An iPhone today will cost you anything form 0 to about £60 today on a 24 month contract. Its amazing that us of a certsin age seem to remember thr iphone as being really expensive, i did too until a few months back, when some one pointed this out, so i went and did some digging. I was quite surprised of my findings as phones are the one area in tech that have actually bucked moores law. But in realty moores law also ended with the Pentium 4 arond 2004, intel ( amd, arm SD etc...) just hacked it by adding more cores instead of exponentially growing (shinkijg the die to grow) each core. So we still get more power to the pound today, but not becaue of moores original law (theory). However, you are correct about the costs in batteries, as we are at the start to midpoint of the "moores" cycle, and manufacturing processes constantly evolve to bring prices cheaper on thr build side. Its the concentration on the evolution of cost cutting by the teaditional oems is what have found them in the position they are in. No ice car has the quality of of mid 2000s ice car, if you compare evey segment against the same ones today. A 100k range rover is cheaper inside today, that one from 20 years ago for example. What they should have been doing is evolving their tech and fabrication processs and not devolving quality for profits. Its lead them down a dead end. China realised 20 years ago they couldn't build ice cars as good as germany so they went all in on EV, that and the Chinese government mandated they wanted to go EV as they dont have access to their own oil, and wanted to be more energy independent, not as relient on expernal nations oil. They have coal (if a dirty), they can do nuclear, and they are all in on solar now, they have the market cornered. So they are quite well set up as a nation moving forward. Especally now they have brics and the belt and road initiative up and running. They have been playing chess for 30 years, while the west havent figuured out checkers yet. When it comes to batteries no one points out that Toyota launched the Pruis in 1997, and there are plenty of 20-year-old Prius cars available for under £2000 secondhand. I will be surprised if any of the Legacy manufacturers will be making ICE vehicles by 2035. They are increasing the price of ICE vehicles in 2025 to make EVs more attractive. They now realise with the Chinese entering the European market that they are in serious trouble, and they need EVs for the Global South market where they used to make 50% of their profits. By 2035 range anxiety will reverse, if the Supermarkets are not making a profit from carbon fuels then they will close that part of their operations. They are all starting to put in chargers, and that will accelerate. BP and Shell are closing filling stations and converting them to Charging Hubs. I live in the South East and 5 years ago when I first leased an EV, I didn't see other EVs. Today it is different, they are everywhere. I guess that in another 5 years due to economies of scale EVs will be 50% cheaper than ICE cars, which will be more expensive for not having the economies of scale. We will look back on 2025 as the tipping point year.

@@paulweston1106 - Interestingly the consultation is not seeking to change primary policy rather the technical implementation rules behind the policy. More specifically seeking to review the ways the automakers can achieve the 2030 date, what role hybrids will have between the 2030 and 2035 dates, as well as what changes to the ZEV mandate trading mechanisms (rather than thresholds) can be undertaken to make the targets more achiveable and penalty level sufficiently punative for the automakers. The consultations, for cars, has a two month time span which would allows it's outcome to be factored into the spring mini-budget if required. Once the changes are rolled out the automakers cannot then claim the ZEV mandate is unfair like they have this year, eventhough still hitting the ZEV mandate target, as they have been involved in the process to derive any revised ZEV mandate delivery rules.

@GruffSillyGoat My reading of it was that if there is enough "legitimate" push back from manufacturers the government may look to use it to push back the crucial date to 2035 and to save face they would claim that they didn't want to damage the industry any more than necessary. I could be wrong on my "reading between the lines" though. If the government did drop the 2030 date there is no guarantee they will be around to implement a later date so it will be interesting to see what happens. Regardless of the consultation process, the legacy manufacturers will still complain and point fingers if they don't get what they want.

The legacy auto manufacturers have a really big problem as one of their main markets, China, has gone and, as you say, will never come back. China is now massively into EVs, helped by inviting Tesla to build there, and now produce more EVs than the domestic market can absorb. They are going to sell them wherever they can and the UK is an obvious target as we encourage (at the moment) free trade. BYD is the most likely company to carve a slice of the market although SAIC already sell loads of MG4s and Geely a few Volvos. Whilst people may be wary of a brand they've never heard of, if the price is right (and it probably is) then it's a done deal. Charging at home is a real game changer for most people. We do need supermarkets and retail parks to offer affordable charging for those that can't charge at home. I know this was happening before the energy crisis but is now needs some government incentive to really get it moving again (with rapid chargers). Public charging away from home is definitely good enough and, if you only use it occasionally, price isn't really an issue. It's going to happen!

And as that's done, we're that much closer to solving the GHG problem as well. Talking about persistence of a thousand years is just confusing. That's about CO2. Tesla can out do Tesla on that too. It’s an energy density problem. TESLA aim to make one battery for every model they sell. As a cost exercise it cheaper to make one battery with one supply chain and one manufacturing line and lock/unlock the range depending on the model. 4860 cell is late but on its way. I’d prefer to buy a high spec medium range TESLA, then the two times a year I do over 150 miles in a trip I’d pay a few quid to extend the range. People buy cars not on the 95% of use case they buy cars on the 5% what ifs. Battery tech does change quick but how long until you can buy it, Toyota has been going on about its solid state battery for the best part of twenty years, still not here.

Current policy like the creation of LTN's only moves the congestion into a more concentrated area. Then they monitor those areas and then say levels have risen. To drive around those areas and not through makes it that every vehicle is travelling often 3 time the distance it should, also creating more emissions. The data they use, like that for climate change, is doctored to prove their point. For instance, if you start recording data at the lower point in a cycle, what will the data actually tell you. Definitely policy is to have zero emissions and Oxfords ZEZ zone is a trail but one that will be rolled out to all cities and then towns and will coincide with the ban of new ice cars to discourage their usage and higher taxes on them. Like sugar tax or that on tobacco products to stop people from doing it..

Before quoting those statistics you should have been clear those 40k+ deaths are not individuals but a statistical equivalent that turns the amount of time people's lives are shortened by into an equivalent number of deaths. In fact another way to put it is that we all lose approximately 2 weeks of life due to air pollution. That's rather less alarming. The fact is the air we breath is the cleanest it's been for centuries and it's still getting better so no need to be panicked into knee jerk reactions.

You're confusing theory and hypothesis there Dave. A hypothesis is tested, a theory is a law or laws developed as a result of this. Theories tend to describe something that doesn't actually physically exist, such as music, or indeed, relativity.
@GruffSillyGoat

More that the things theories describe do physically exist but our description and understanding of them is somewhat partial so we theorise about their physics rather than being able to fully and acturately define them.
@truebrit3670
@truebrit3670 3 күн бұрын
@GruffSillyGoat not true. Theories represent that which we can devise rules to explain what is perceived, as opposed to facts which represent physical properties. The electronic structure of iron is a fact, electron orbital shapes are theories. The resonant frequency of sound waves are facts, the modeling of these to produce what we perceive as music is theory. Theories are simply not things we don't fully understand.

@@truebrit3670 - we're saying the same thing just with a different emphasis. I'm saying the physical thing (fact, phenomena) exists and that the 'theory' represents our best current, and tested, understanding and description of the thing. Theroies can and do change over time and knowledge as understanding about the 'thing' grows. In the case of music three types of theory exist, the artistic one that describes how music is produced and percieved, the physics one that describes the mechanics of how the sound is produced, and the neuroscience and psychological one that describes how the brain processes and percieves the sound to prompt thought and emotion. My conjecture is that the physical thing exists outside of the theory, it doesn't need a theory to be devised in order for it to exist. It was this point I was making as the original post above stated the physical thing doesn't exist. This is not correct as it is mixing up 'theory' with 'theoretical', which have different meanings even though both stem from the same ancient greek source - theōría meaning contemplation, speculation, or investigation. This is also true of artistic based theories like music as well, the theory descibes the way sounds can be produced in ways that are enjoyable - at its core it is a theory about the perception of sounds. Indeed things can make sounds, the sound waves are carried over the medium of a gas to our ears, and the brain processes the sound and can interepret music. There are genres and branches of music that include such 'found music', such as some of the works by Philip Glass, the experimental pieces by Stockhausen, or the progressive music of Pink Floyd.
@truebrit3670
@truebrit3670 2 күн бұрын
@GruffSillyGoat agreed. Therefore we can agree that a theory isn't a hypothesis as proposed in the video. Because a theory is already tried and tested.

Here are a few. You are receiving tax money from others as a subsidy when buying new. You are not paying the same taxes towards road upkeep. (This will eventually have to change and we will move towards pay per mile). You are contributing to the rise of China - (because they get on with the job) which has geopolitical implications and on the same score contributing to the downfall of Western car makers - because they didn't get on with it. All true answers to your question. But i remain a believer that we need to transform and will transform. That the subsidies help with this and are a good thing. But i would rather they now started reducing the purchase subsidies and spent money on the charging network and dropped the VAT on public charging to Zero % - thus really helping open up the market to those that cannot charge at home. China produce lots of pollution from coal but they are building solar and wind at an incredible rate to replace that coal. Go google. Why ? Partly pollution but now very much because it is proving cheaper which will give them an additional manufacturing edge. Plus they don't want to import coal and oil. When it comes to batteries no one points out that Toyota launched the Pruis in 1997, and there are plenty of 20-year-old Prius cars available for under £2000 secondhand. I will be surprised if any of the Legacy manufacturers will be making ICE vehicles by 2035. They are increasing the price of ICE vehicles. Petrol stations in Norway are closing. This trend is due to a combination of factors, including the country's ambitious climate goals, which aim to reduce fossil fuel consumption, and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs). As more Norwegians adopt EVs, the demand for traditional petrol stations has decreased, leading some to close or convert to charging stations for electric vehicles. I live in the South East and 5 years ago when I first leased an EV, I didn't see other EVs. Today it is different, they are everywhere. I guess that in another 5 years due to economies of scale EVs will be 50% cheaper than ICE cars, which will be more expensive for not having the economies of scale. We will look back on 2025 as the tipping point year.h
