How do you know if doing something is good or bad? How do you make decisions about how to proceed in a situation? If someone asks you to do something, is it allowed? Or good?
These questions are questions of moral theology.
Today's video with Fr. Mark-Mary is workshop on Catholic moral theology-by way of skydiving. The conclusions may surprise you.
Note: this is a safe video for lovers of skydiving :)

My father was in military for 20 years-lifer. 82nd Airborne. Korean & Vietnam Veteran. 1 jump every month or two stateside. It was a thrill watching parachuting however, one day, his chute failed so he quickly engaged 2nd chute. 4 fellow gi's hopped in a jeep, quickly heading to his estimated landing site. Chute barely opened in time.Drug him. He said it wasn't pleasant! Checked him over at military hospital. He continued in 82nd but I never again desired to jump from a plane. Brave people we depend upon, may they be blessed but not for me. No! Thank you, Fr Mark-Mary. ✝️✝️✝️

I am Catholic and a former sport skydiver. Good discussion... I started skydiving when my children were quite young. I experienced a near 4-year break in jumping due to deployment demands and related workload. I started jumping again when that time was finished and one day took my sons to the DZ. I had made a couple of jumps, was feeling great, and my boys hugged me and told me that I was their hero. Going up for the next jump, I looked out the window as we departed and saw my sons standing next to a friend and fellow jumper. I felt quite selfish in that moment as a father. My obligation was on the ground and I was doing something that I loved in the air. My obligation to them as a father won the day... I made my final jump, packed up, and never returned to the sport.

Because this walks us through how to determine if an act is morally good, this is a great question! Thank you for exploring the bigger question behind it!

Some questions (like this one) just aren’t questions of morality. This is an example of a morally neutral question where overthinking it in this way leads people to deprive themselves of things they want for no good reason. Also, it belies the idea that God has a plan for you.

Taking part in slightly life-threatening recreational activities can toughen you up and make you brave. My judgement is to go for it a few times, especially if it scares you a little bit. The principle of agere contra applies.

Great video! This is something that every Catholic ought to do habitually: To always carefully ponder the morality of our actions based on the object, intention, and circumstances.

I'd love to hear a similar analysis for an immune-compromised person considering whether to go to Mass in person every Sunday. The stakes are much higher, with a higher risk of death (than skydiving) and a higher risk to the soul for not going to Mass.

Should a Catholic ride a rollercoaster? How about fly in a plane? Zip line? Mountain climb?

I think that the Catechism warns against putting one’s life at risk unnecessarily. Life is precious, and it can be a sin to engage in reckless behavior.

I used to work with jumpers when I was in the military but like I told them when they invited me to join them, if the aircraft is working, I'm staying in it. But that's me.

I did a tandem jump when I was 50 just to experience it. It was terrifying yet so peaceful. Totally placing myself in God's hands. I went with an experienced, trusted friend. The actual jump out of the plane was terrifying, because I had no control. The first fall out of the plane I didn't even feel like I was falling, it felt like the wind was holding me up. Then when my friend pulled the chute, it was the most peaceful floating feeling, like being like a bird. Incredible experience, but I must admit I won't do it again. I am glad I did it once, though!

My father was a paratrooper in 82nd airborne was very comfortable doing work in the air became an ironworker. One of his last requests was to take him to go for one more skydive. Unfortunately i didnt comply and he suddenly passed from cancer. As trubute to my father I decided to trust God and so i studied eight hours so I could go AFF whuch is accelerated free fall where I jump by myself and am tasked to pull my own shoot. I trust my own God given intelligence more than I could being strapped to a total stranger. So needless to say it went very smoothly my first jump second jump and third!!!🎉😅. We are more capable of "death defying" feats than we realize! Also the accidents are user error. I trusted my team which included experienced jumpers/jumper that jumped during mine, also the radio man on the ground, pilot(he was old) and those who packed my parachute!
