Me personally, I say don't invest in anything you can't actually own. The only exception would be investing in a child's education to help give them a brighter future. "Why not invest in a house?" Because he can't own the land that house would sit on. Investing in a business that has to be 60% Filipino owned, means he doesn't own it and can be kicked out of the business he started. Copying a business does not guarantee success, the business, financial, and personnel management are different and will give different results. The laws do not favor foreigners, so why should you put anything into it. You want to "invest", do it by purchasing items in the Philippines and adding your foreign currency into the Philippines economy. Thank you Lorie and ladies for the interview, I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Husband and wife investing is normal. The problem is the foreigners have no protection. They often pay 100% and have no control over anything. That's corruption. The Philippines needs to put protective laws in place or just let foreigners own. He pays, he owns and his wife MUST inherit without any tax ever being put on inheritance (an evil practice in some countries). Then when she dies the land HAS to be split amongst the children made by both. It's more complicated than can be explained here but based on being fairer.

Foreigners shouldn't own, that will drive up prices and locals wouldn't afford to buy homes. I think personally its perfect how it is.... idiots getting scammed is no reason to change that law to let Foreigners own outright. Foreigners do have some protection if they research and use some sense 🙄
@PassportLife
@PassportLife Ай бұрын
I agree with there being protections, but I do not believe that foreign should be able to own businesses or land in their country. There needs to be a compromise that protects the foreigners' interest, though.

My filipina wife is a good person, but I never will invest in philippines, and trust her, because since tbe law is in her favor, I can see from the beginning that it is wrong. Philippines should not force foreigner to own one so much little when buy properties and favor the filipinos. It is no fair. Filipinos can own in our countries, but philippines does not allow them to own; and what is allow to own, is share with spouse also. At the end the big looser will be philippines, seat and wait, and will see it

As a foreigner my take is most businesses fail regardless, and most of the foreigners living in the Philippines are not their countries best and brightest. I've been fairly successful in investing in real estate in the Philippines but that is what I did in the US as well. So it is just taking a skill set and applying it to a new market.
@goatman3828

I think the biggest problems are that as a foreigner you have no rights. To open a business is technically illegal. And so you do it anyway, taking a salary from your business is illegal. And if you are trying to produce something you get to have everything shut down because the power is shut off on a near daily basis. And if you are there because you are married to a Filipina, she has a temper tantrum and can get you sent packing to another country. But everything you paid for, the land, the house, the business, they all stay with her. It really is nearly the same in the USA. She, at any time, and for any reason, take half of everything or more and leave you broķe. The best option is to hold your money tight. It might not grow as fast, but you know it won't disappear on someone's whim.

The reason to invest in my opinion is if you want to set up your Filipina partner for after you are gone. I plan on retiring in the Philippines and purchasing land in my Filipina's name and a home with the understanding that it will be ours while we are together and hers when Im gone.

As has been noted already, a foreigner in the Philippines has no, or limited, property rights in most cases. Philippine property records can be subject to latent claims of some level of ownership by members of families in the chain of ownership which can cloud even a Philippine citizen's title . Even if title is good, easements are good, permits are good, utilities are guaranteed, etc, a lack of zoning laws can result in a pig or chicken farm showing up next door. Then you have the fact that Filipinas almost always think of their Filipino family first and the husband is expected to go along with the program in second place. I have had friends get so screwed (pig farms, sari-sari, motels) by their gfs and in-laws that I would NEVER invest in a business in the Philippines, especially with a low barrier of entry, if I have good assets in my home country! I have heard of a few successes, but not in the majority of cases. My wife is free to invest all she wants of her own money and has about a 50-50 track record.

The notion of, that sari sari store is successful, so I will open one too and then I will make a lot of money is flawed obviously. The problem is, maybe the original store had someone who has business sense and made good decisions. Maybe they were successful because they were the only store around. Not everyone knows how to run a business. Plus sari sari stores is not a big money maker, yet takes 15 hours or more of your day to manage. That is a huge time commitment, that unless the man does not mind staying home all day, everyday . Lastly, there are men that had a good relationship however it did not work out, so it wasn't necessarily that he got scammed, but now he lost his house that he "invested in" and also possibly a business as well.

Direct competition can be good. Especially if there are several quality restaurants near each other. People get used to going there and eventually try them all. A small neighborhood sarisari, it sn't a good idea to create competition. I lived near a group of sabon stores along a highway and people from all over stopped there.

I am a UK citizen. My wife is a Filipina whom I met in HK 9 years ago. We live in the Philippines with our family. I invested around USD300,000 in the Philippines, in property and commercial interests. We (she, obviously due to Philippines law) own property which is now valued at USD800,000. We also have investments and a regular income of around PP80,000pcm. It's nothing like the cash I was earning in HK, but it definitely suits our needs. Plus, we don't pay rent and the value of the property is increasing every month.

Hi Lorie,,_ interesting interviews! A couple were knowledgeable and a couple were a bit naive. I will never ever understand the business copying thing. It's very irritating and it just dilutes the market. If you're going to build a business,,you want something that's a bit unique and hard to copy.,,,Marlon

I think many foreigners don't want to start a business in the Philippines but they do it to help out there partner or her family. I think many deep down know that the business will either fail or not make any profit. Building a house for you and your family to live in is not really an investment for profit as just a home to live in and a safe space for your family and something for your wife and children when you pass on from this world. Yhen reminds me of Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, a Philippines version. 😊
