Yes, chains are one of those things when you need them you need them when you don’t you don’t. But chains don’t really make you dig in much. It’s throttle control you spin your tires without chains you dig in you spin your tires with chains you dig in. I’ve actually had to use them twice over the last two years, but it was due to ice under the snow. they are such a pain to put on. I just launched my KZbin video from about six weeks ago where we had no choice and we had to chain up. The biggest misconception on ice is airing your tires down too low this will actually make things worse on ice and create less pressure per square inch.
@RevereOverland9 ай бұрын
They were fantastic where it was icy! They didn’t help a lot in the deep snow though, and Will had to be a lot more careful. He was a lot more patient and than me, but still dug in eventually!

Serious question: why did you put the socks/chains on the front axle instead of the rear or both? Thanks.
@RevereOverland9 ай бұрын
I only have one set, and wanted them on the steering for the icy climb. For the deep snow I figured it would help a little in getting the front up onto the snow. Next time I’m out I want to try socks on the front and chains on the rear.

Nice heater but that’s expensive! Cheapest I could find it for was $1000. Do you have a link to buy the propane heater? Does your heater put out as much heat as Chris’s diesel heater does? What power source did you run yours off of since your friend was using the Bluetti?
@RevereOverland9 ай бұрын
It’s very pricey, but worth it if you’re going on long trips to cold places thousands of miles from home! If you’re staying in state then a less reliable cheap diesel heater will be fine - if it fails, just go home! Our heaters are both rated at 2,000kW, although I feel like mine gets hotter. The tent can easily get over 100° if I leave it on! I ran mine off the 12v output in the back since it doesn’t pull much power.

Can somebody explain why you guys air down in snow ? Seems counterintuitive in those snow conditions. I would rather air up and apply proper chains ( no socks ) . Doesnt like everybody recommend slightly more tire pressure in deep snow ? At least thats what was in my mind from the austrian automobile club.
@RevereOverland9 ай бұрын
In deep snow you want as much of a contact patch as possible so you can drive on top of the layers. Airing up and adding chains is for digging down, and with 2 feet of snow, that causes problems like we demonstrated.

@@RevereOverland Thanks for the elaborate answer. Was always kinda confused since i learned it differently back then. Can you also explain why you go for socks instead of chains ?
@jasonh41679 ай бұрын
It’s all about ground pressure and floatation, full tire pressure sinks down when tires spun, and chains are a long day in 3-4’ of snow sinks faster.
@jasonh41679 ай бұрын
4x4 chains were used in the 80’s for icy slope traction. Deep snow you’ll frame out in seconds. Simmular in deep mud.

@@Intrepid17011 Socks are not a replacement for chains..they work by letting the snow pack onto the tire, which causes more grip/float..but they don't give better traction in every scenario than chains.
