So I've had POD k300s, custom CTi and Mobius. I was wearing the PODs when I tore my MCL and ACL when I hit a tree. Truth is no knee brace can really protect you from twisting injuries. In my opinion the Mobius is the best out of the 3 brands I've tried. They are the most comfortable and feel the most protective.

Asterisk has a buckle that you can use to attach to your boot that is designed to prevent twisting as it attaches the boot to the knee brace so your whole leg should twist rather than just the foot to knee. It looks good on paper as Vegas says. But I know what you mean, I was wearing Leatt X-Frame which are a reasonable brace (but suffers from the same problem as mentioned at 8:13) and sprained my knee via twisting it. I think I'm just going to mod my brace to attach to my boot.
@inevespace
@inevespace 2 жыл бұрын
The trick with braces is proper fitment. Moreover, a brace itself does not prevent twisting injury. Slightly bent knee prevent twisting(ok, ok, reduces chances). So ideally you need to setup hyper-extension locking on your brace in such a way that your leg can't be straight. Otherwise you need something like mentioned Asterisk's buckle to boots.

Those knee braces you’re wearing, the asterisk the two bands at the top you’re supposed to bend those to the shape of your leg and they’re supposed to fit like a glove up there so they don’t slide down so they’re probably fit to your friends leg

"it's not guaranteed" bro, LITERALLY no safety devices are guaranteed to prevent injury. Knee guards are absolutely needed for any competitive level bike sport. A helmet is not guaranteed to protect your head, but it's better than nothing. Knee braces have been scientifically proven to prevent injury. also, the brace is clearly too big for you. that's why they're so specific on fit. You are VERY opinionated without having real objective views, this is another thing that you came into it not wanting to like it, so you didn't like it.

After 5 years of using EVS Axis Pro and now the Mobius X8, I can tell you the Mobius has about 1/2” less width, almost 1/2 pound lighter, a superior fit on the leg and better protection for impacts. Gripping the tank with the Mobius feels more natural and sliding forward and backwards while gripping the tank is much smoother. It is slightly warmer but in the overall scheme of things, not noticeable while your riding because it fits so comfortably. Thanks for your demonstrations and opinions.

Have had the Mobius braces for 3 years and I think they do a good job protecting the knee. Negative sides are they are kind of warm and, as you said, hard to fit in some trousers. One positive thing I experienced when starting to use the mobius kneebraces is that they supports the knee very well. So even when you dont crash they are worth wearing. Since they stabilizes the knee when riding I tend not to be so tired or soar in the knee as without them. They hold up good. Only thing is that the comfort pad that sits on the plate that supports the back of the knee has come of a couple of times. But thats easy to fix yourself.

These type of braces are more intended for people with previous knee/ ligament injuries and prevention. If your just looking for protection from minor falls and crashes there are lots of options. I had guards just like yours but they never stayed in place and sometimes would get stuck under the radiator guards. So I upgraded to the “bionic” style knee/shin guards. I started with fly, they didn’t fit me right. Felt like they were non symmetrical but neither side was the correct side. Tried a couple different brands and finally ended up with the Leatt. They’re great. (Remember these are guards, not braces. There is a difference).

I can understand you opinion. Knee braces are like neck braces, some hate them and some swear by them. My experience is that knee braces are worthwhile and good. They are certainly way overpriced for plastic and metal pieces but oh well. The $500-800 you spend on a pair is way less than your deductible from a surgery. I was wearing loose and substandard knee protection a year ago in a race. Had an off and twisted my knee. Severed ACL and torn Meniscus. Had to ride another 800kms over 2 days to finish the race. Was awful. Had surgery 2 weeks ago. Surgery was approximately $20k and my deductible portion (what I had to pay) was $2500. I do not know many racers, competitive class, that ride without them. We all do. Just like a neck brace at first they feel awkward. After a few hours you forget they are there. I love them now. I have no idea whether the ones j use noe (Alpinestars) would have saved my knee a year ago but I do know I will not risk a ride without them. Especially since the recovery from my surgery means I won't be riding for 3-4 months minimum, and that is only because I have my next week long race in 4 months. Normally full sport return would not be until about 9 months. Froma an old guy - wear them and save your knees!

I agree with a good deal of this, but after spending 3 months not able to put an weight on my leg because of a tibia-plateau break, these would have helped me. It took my a while to get used to these, but I have ridden all day with them, and now, it feels weird to ride without them. I am glad you are pointing all this out, I think it is important for people to know this info. I had to learn it the hard way. That is true. I can't prove they would have prevented my injury. I really do feel naked without them now. One thing you didn't mention is that they can dig into your legs while wearing them. The 1/2 socks they come with just fall down. I have been wearing what amounts to "Long Underwear" under my riding pants. Cycle Gear makes something called Heat-Out and Freeze-Out for hot and cold weather. Those make wearing braces MUCH more comfortable.

about a year ago I tried all the brands (in store) including leatt c frame and like you found them all uncomfortable and weird feeling so I didn't buy them. After several friends having knee injuries I decided to look again as the new leatt x frame came out....went in store and tried these and they felt good....have been riding with them since and I don't notice them. All the issues you describe such as feeling wide, slipping down etc I don't have with the leatt x frames....as others have said, correct sizing is crucial and I also think certain brands just fit certain anatomies better.

Here's the best advice I can give you. I've wore just about every kind of knee brace there is as far as off the shelf goes the mobius are by far the best for comfort and protection. Also if the knee braces are that uncomfortable you either a different size or a different brand other than the weight you shouldn't even know your wearing them. If you are wanting the most perfect set of knee braces have some custom ctis made by far the knee brace you can get but they are more expensive. For the knee brace sliding down run a knee brace sock and make the top buckle of your boot a little tighter that seems to help. As far as them pushing your knees away from the bike when riding that really comes down to your feet on the pegs if your toes are turned out then your knees are going to go out. Hope you find some that work for you because 600$ is a small price when it comes to a blown out knee.

You've got some good points, and I agree that any true knee brace will be less comfortable than knee guards. But then again knee surgery, and 6-12 months off the bike/work is way more uncomfortable! The problem here is that you tried what is IMO probably the most uncomfortable knee brace available! I bought these and sold them after riding in them for only 10 minutes for the exact reasons you mentioned. I had the original Asterisks years ago and they were great. This "Ultra Cell" is crap! I currently wear custom CTI's which I got my insurance to pay for and while I wouldn't call them comfortable I have no problem riding the entire day in them. I'm about due for a new set of braces and if insurance doesn't cover them I will buy the Mobius. My buddy went from many years on custom CTI's to the Mobius and won't go back!

"the only protection it will give you is you will ride a bit less"... the next questionable statement "the companies won't GUARANTEE that it won't protect you from hyper extension they only say it helps prevent" ...... I don't understand that at all. Of course they aren't going to guarantee it's going to do anything. Do car companies guarantee the airbag in your car will save your life? no. of course they don't that would be idiotic. A knee brace company guaranteeing the brace will save you from any injury would also be absolutely idiotic. Knee brace company doesn't control the rider or the environment around them. You could put your entire body in a titanium iron man suit and still get injured if you crash hard enough or in the right way. I really don't see your logic here I am trying to but I just don't see it. Another point I would mention is the cost of a $600 knee brace compared to the cost of a hyperextension or torn ligament injury like ACL MCL. 9 months of healing, PT, and pain and anguish bc you didn't want to spend $600 seems illogical to me. Oh yeah and you're insurance deductible which is likely $2,000 -$8,000 per year so yeah your deductible would have paid for your knee brace over and over again.

I have Alpinestar Fluid Pro bracers and the lower strap reaches a little over my calf so it doesn't slide down. I think if you just wear them (and wear something under them so they don't directly rub your legs - during the summer it gets hot when wearing something under them but you got to do what you got to do), and *get used to them* they'll not bother you at all.

Two rides and you get used to them and won’t want to ride without. I really don’t notice them when riding. I wear knee brace sleeves under. Proper sizing is important. You can adjust the hyperextension stops. The best braces are the custom CTI or DonJoy. I have used the POD K4 for two summers now. Plenty of goofy offs and weird leg situations. Also once had a dual sport on top of me and pinned under. The knee brace edge kept the bike off me and from pushing side of my knee in. Good knee cap protection too. I’m am also certain as one can be that they have kept me from twisting my knee and stuff in various situations. I like the general support they provide. The unfortunate part for most people is that the Donjoy braces cost a staggering amount of money 💰 like around $900 per brace so it’s $1,800 for the set But these are the best custom fitted braces that your money can buy period end of story and you you can wear all day long without any of the problems that you’ve talked about. Teach yourself to ride, protecting your knees. Remain feet up all the time no matter what, if you are going to wash out in a turn, front or back wheel, let it, you should be forward on the bike, so keep your feet on the pegs, slide out, let the bike take the hits, de-clutch, then get up and get going. I disagree with your opinion. Coming from a medical background and knowing what these things have been designed to do, and how well they perform the tall task of protecting the complex construction of our legs + knees... Medical braces (often tailored to the patient or individual) are very expensive, but these braces are designed for certain leg shapes (like shoes and our feet). And the first time you put a helmet on you probably thought: "wow, that's itchy and uncomfortable" or a wrestling shoe or whatever. But overtime you learn that you have an oval-shaped head, you pronate or supinate while running. Thing is, try the pods, try riding with the asterisks, leatt, WHATEVER. Just appreciate how different these are from simple knee cup + shin guards and what kind of protection they can offer. Do you think if they put "intended for the elimination of knee injury or guaranteed to reduce the actuality of your knee breaking or tearing" that the companies would have issues with people claiming knee injuries or symptoms from crashing and elicit that to the manufacturer? They'd be paying for everyone that owned a pair, tore or broke a knee, and got a surgery (when they probably weren't wearing the brace or it didn't fit them properly). I don't want to say you were being ignorant in the video because that's a rude statement that usually garnishes offense, but you're speaking about the schematics of something it sounds like you have next to no experience with. (I have asterisk cells, used to have Thor knee cup/shin guards)

Combined over 1 year of rest/ recovery and no activity sucks for sure. Anything even knee guards will feel weird and cumbersome until you take the time to get used to them. I’m sure the first time wearing riding boots and a helmet didn’t feel real comfortable either but he still did it. Vegas RoManiac please don’t discourage people from wearing protective gear. I think the key to knee brace fit is the first strap below the knee. This is the only part of the leg that tappers the opposite direction to the rest of the knee. So if you get a good fit on this part of the leg (the top of the calf muscle) it will prevent the knee brace sliding down. I noticed the asterisk look like a terrible fit and the strap seems to be half way down the leg. I currently use pods. In the past I have used CTi which were very good but I broke them. Asterisk cell around 10 years ago which were not a very good fit and fell apart. I now use pod which seem to be a good fit, however I did injure my knee for the first time with the pods. It is difficult to know if any protection would have protected me. I have since continued to use the pods but made sure everything is tighter, I installed the thicker pads and made sure all the straps are tight. Before I would tighten the upper calf muscle as tight as I can stand and the rest of the straps would be as looses as feels like it was offering protection. Now I go tighter, I also added the extension restriction. The mobius brace looks like it could be good but I noticed there is virtually no ventilation in the front. I will be trying the mobius next. It seems like they have put a lot of research into the product to get it right.
@benstanway3238
@benstanway3238 5 жыл бұрын
I've just brought the mobius and the fit is the best feeling brace I've worn. I think another problem with knee braces is the thing it is attached to (your body) is not a solid thing. So the brace is always going to have some squish because your skin and muscles are squishy. I've come from the pod braces and the fit is far superior on the mobius brace so far. The frame doesn't feel as rigid as the pod braces in places but I think that is the way they are designed. They are flexible where needed and rigid where needed too.

I grew up riding dirt bikes in the 70s. I wore open-face helmets, riding gloves, jeans or riding pants with plastic knee cups, and riding boots. We didn't have hand guards back then. In ten years of frequent riding, in the biggest get-off I ever had, I think these knee guards would have been very helpful. I did have injuries to both knees, but not severe ones: fractured right knee cap, quite a few stitches on the left one. I was not wearing my padded riding pants with the knee cups, and I wish I had been! Probably would have been OK except for a fractured wrist. I'm considering some trail riding again at 57, nothing too strenuous but still proper single-track stuff. I'll definitely use good hand guards, but otherwise I'll probably dress the same way I did back then.

I have the Pod braces and I don't even notice them once I start riding. In fact, my buddies all take their braces/pads off and I just wear mine out for beers after they're so comfortable. But, I have no idea if they really protect. I've crashed and hit my knee and they protected the knee from impact but not sure about the hyperextension or anything else. I always wear a base layer under my pants and the brace over my base layer so it's a lot more comfortable. But again, I don't know if these really work or not. I crashed a lot when I first started riding but had the Pods on and never got hurt (when I say crashed a lot, I mean like 2 or 3 times every ride...had never even sat on a motorcycle until February and have 1500 miles in 5 months).

Proper sizing and fit with help prevent them slipping down. You knees not touching is because your normal riding position has the wrong footing. Balls of your feet, pointing straight , if not slightly inwards. Then your knees could pushed against the bike. Try the proper fitting braces, then try again. Try proper positioning and try again. And nobody rides with their heels touching their butt for hours as you say. This is much better than $40 guards, and is an excellent option for knee protection.

Secondly, watching you grip the bike.... you don't ride with duck feet, you ride with your toes pointed more inwards. That's another reason why you were having issues with the feeling on the bike. I appreciate your video but it is wrong on all accounts. Make sure the braces are the right size, fitted properly, worn properly, stand on the pegs properly, and then just get used to them. So, after searching for web’s info we END UP BUYING ON LINE WITHOUT TRYING THE KNEE BRACES OUT FIRST, even though we’re aware it’s a mistake. The brace didn't break so passed the load into the bone so I think knee braces need to be weaker to spread the load.

This is a sad story , I'm glad you are ok and yes I agree with you it's not all good there are bad things that could happen when you have too much protection

Thanks The story didn't end there as 8 weeks in while getting on a fixed bicycle in the gym doing training and snapped the main pin and found the surgeon had put the wrong size pins in my leg so another operation one week later to fit larger pins as he was on holiday and other surgeon wont operate on another's work.

Just a thought for you mate. The top of the brace looks to not have been adjusted to fit your thigh and has a big gap even after you did the strap up. You see those two thin metal bands at the top? It looks like you need to tighten them a fair bit.

Ruptured my ACL my solution is the Pod K8 knee braces one of if not the lightest and most advanced braces on the market, yes they are expensive but you get what you pay for, a few of the issues you addressed in this video are fitment issues those braces are to big for your leg

Bob the Dealer I’ve been looking at the new K8 Carbon braces. Is that what you have? You recommend?

Pod k8 brace has the same flaw as all the others, no back of the knee support, in a hyper extension situation they will do nothing.. Guaranteed

A great video ,i found EXACTLY the same problems as you did and the slipping down drives me mad.I dont use them and am looking now at trying knee sleeves with light neoprene armour PLUS hard armour over the top.

I have the Asterics Ultra Cell 2.0 and many times it saved my knee. It's true that in 37 degrees Celsius they are uncomfortable but when you knee is cought between a hard place and your bike moving forward... Man... It is true that they move, and it is true that you sweat more, but ACL injury in times of Covid 19 and at my age... Sorry, I prefer to bring my cammel bag and sweet and ride single tracks all summer long than limping for 4 months and never having the same knees again. Really... It's just a question of time if you do enduro

I agree with your u except the statement in the beginig, " they saved my knee many times" how do you know? I have been riding my bike for the past 7 years with normal knee guards and they saved my knee many times! You see, there is no way to know if they actually worr ot you are just uncomfortable in them., I do agree about the Acl, it sucks

@@vegasromaniac well, when you put your foot down and you feel your knee staying back and your bike and body moving forward, and all of a sudden your entire right side moves with your boot, it's not magic, it the brace

This is a common argue, knee brace or pads. I used to hate braces, especially those brands that are not custom made. Don Joy and Ortema are the best in the market, expensive yes, but a good insurance will cover it and they are less bulky. I hated the Leatt, sold them after 2 months, but a thing i suggest you is always wear brace socks, the one i use hug the brace on top and cant slide down, more comfortable on your skin. The moebious is so freaking hot that i cant use it here.

I have some leatt-C frame pro carbon braces. They were pricey but they are cheaper than knee surgery. Had a crash this weekend and I know my knees would have been injured if I had guards. Also look into SIDI and or Gaerne boots as well.
