Cry baby 535q: tweakable version of "THE" wah pedal. Is it worth it?
We explain how does a wah wah pedal work by quickly building one and go over what each of the tweakable parameters does.
We go over pros and cons, listen to sound samples at various settings and finally compare it to other cry baby models.

Thank you for a humourous and educational presentation. I have been watching effects pedal videos all day and yours is the only video that provided real, usable information, and in a graphic and understandable format at that. Kudos and a big bucket of "thumbs up".

Best explanation I've seen on wahs generally and Q factor, and I've been playing for 45 years. Also, you did well in pointing out the differences between the modern incarnation. I had one of the very early ones: not true bypass, Q and boost adjustments were inside the pedal, 18 volts instead of 9, and no boost on/off at all. The only external control was the knurled selector knob. I have a recent one now, and appreciate that it's 9-volt and true bypass.

I've had mine since the late 90's. My biggest complaint is the pedal travel is too short. Love that I can tweak the eq range but with the travel of the pedal being a bit more shorter than average, there isn't a lot of room to make it a bit more expressive. A bit too bright but if you dial back the overdrive or distortion it's fine. Overall I'm happy with mine. Great video btw. Very informative and humorous.

The big knob is not making the rage wider. It's just moving the low peak and high peak. all the ranges has approximately same size.

Nice video, I've had the 535Q wah for close to 20 years. I made some needed updates through the years: - changed the large Metal Wah selector knob to a Gibson top hat knob, it displays numbers on the knob so you know the Wah range factor you are - you'll need to cut the Potentiometer shaft to shorten it. - For the Q and boost mini knobs I used White paint and painted a small dot so I can see where the small knobs are set. (I usually have the Q high and Boost at unity) - I replaced the Pivot pin because the Wah movement was very loose and didn't stay in place, I replaced the it with a nut and bolt - mod can be seen here: i.imgur.com/pr9jQru.jpg -I also place a small Self Stick Rubber Pads for Kitchen cabinets on the top switch felt to be able to turn on the switch with less force. - For securing / velcroing 535Q wah to pedalboard I purchased a Pedalock wah mount from ebay see here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2GTo2Vnq9t2obc

Sound like good upgrades - in my case the pedal stays in place, but lack of any markings on the knobs is a problem :)

I just got my Dimebag wah. Something I find quite intriguing compared to the 535q, is that it has a fine tune knob. Overall honestly the 535q and Dimebag are probably the best wahs on the market because you can really make whatever you want out of their tone.
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, I was supposed to bring that up around 2:14 - dimebag version's fine tune knob allows you to set the high point in the sweep range, that's why I say its the best wah on the market at the end of the video. I'm pretty sure I had it explained in the script, I must have edited it out when finishing the video. Its a pity because I've put so much effort in explaining how the sweep range works :/ Well, gotta be more careful next time :)

If you play mostly clean, 535Q is the way to go. If you play mostly with gain, distortion / overdrive, go with Dimebag. Or run both, thats what I do.

Difference between this and the 535q mini?
@lobster-music
@lobster-music Жыл бұрын
According to the specs they should have the same circuitry - there was a difference a few years ago, but now they are the same. The main difference is the auto-return feature on the mini - wah effect switches off automatically when you take your foot of the pedal. In full size you have to switch it off. This is pretty cool, but sometimes you want to use the wah as a filter, and just leave it on without having to hold your foot on it ;)

Will this hardware pedal work with bias Fx2 program and how to make it work in program ?
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 5 жыл бұрын
That's complicated... If you want the wah "in front" of other effects, no problem, just plug in like this: guitar -> wah -> audio interface. If you want it anywhere else... that depends on the audio interface, as you will have to route the signal to the wah and back. That should be doable, but not trivial and not fun. Actually, you may be better off with one of these: www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_fcb_1010.htm. With a little bit of tweaking it should be possible (at least with a little help from cubase or other DAW) to assign each pedal to control any parameter, so you will get not only wah, but also whammy, volume pedal, distorsion pedal, etc. If you have any old multieffect with expression pedals and midi outs, it should also be possible to set it up to control bias fx.

How would you recommend the dimebag wah for cleans?
@lobster-music
@lobster-music 4 жыл бұрын
It will be ok - it can do exactly what other wahs can and much more. And if you don't like it or buy a new guitar and it doesn't sound good - you can tweak all the parameters, unlike with most standard wahs. I think if you're not on a budget, go for it - it will be OK both for cleans and heavier tones :)

@@lobster-music Thanks for the prompt response :) I was pretty confused between the 535q and the dimebag, since i don't limit myself to playing just metal. Also, would the dimebag be true bypass (with 0 boost?). I'm pretty new to the wah-wah game.

@@lobster-music Ah, i already placed an order for the dimebag a half and hour back 😂. Most reviews did favor it over 535Q. Anyway, I'm sure I'll like it for what it is and if I do feel the need of a true bypass, I could get it modded. Thank you!

@lobster-music
@lobster-music 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks :). It may be slightly above that range, but I would go for a "big unit" - like zoom G5N or Boss ME80. They both have a USB port for easy editing and built-in USB audio interface for low-latency recording, and they both have a couple of effect slots in the signal path, so you can do something like compressor -> amp simulator ->chorus -> delay -> reverb. This should be really enough for any kind of music until you become rich enough to go for analog pedals, so it's an long-term investment. Don't believe people that will tell you it will become obsolete - here is a video that compares a 20-year old POD to modern pedals, and it doesn't sound much off: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raTSlIuXl5iZgas . And keep in mind, the guy on the right is the owner of the biggest music store in UK, so he should actually do his best to push new stuff down our throats ;) Zoom sounds are usually more "over the top" and Boss is the other side of the extreme - it's "dry", but that's subjective, so go to a music store and check those out if possible. And also, try other products as well and remember that you can return it if you don't like it ;) And finally, don't go for anything without an expression pedal. It's not really about the wah wah as much as about volume pedal - when playing gigs without a dedicated sound guy it can really save your life ;)
