An extremely underrated car. I owned on and it's probably the best car I've ever had. Better daily than my dc5 , and civic R, and even my beautiful 245vrs . I would definitely buy this without thinking twice. Very rare. Very good for cornering. Double wishbone front and rear. While other cars were in movies pretending to be race cars or people thinking they were fast this one made history in BTCC. WTCC . Reliable and definitely the best 4door FWD ever made. Now i cant wait few hours to have time and see this one.

Great video, that sounds epic. As a former owner of two “similar”cars……a H22a (same engine as this iirc) powered Honda Prelude and a 306 Rallye, I can confidently say the Honda engine was the sweetest. Torque was decent enough as you’ve mentioned and only sacrificed some of the vtec top end of the other hot engines. I love pugs but I’d go for the Honda!

I've driven both and I have think a 306 Rallye would be more fun more of the time, but on the right road the accord is amazing. As you say the chassis is superb and resists understeer so well. The Rallye however is arguably even more talented on a B road. Either would make a brilliant modern classic. I think 1993-1999 really was the golden era of usable, reliable and capable but not over tyred, weight and complex road cars.

I had one for years and they're fantastic cars. You can drive them "normally" all day with the family in without attracting any attention. They look just like a normal Honda without any boy racer flash, but it'll beat anything in its class. Mine certainly didn't make as much noise as the one that you drove, has it got a modified exhaust. Being so quiet was one of its biggest virtues. A Honda Accord beats any Peugeot in every respect especially build quality, don't even remotely consider buying one if there's a Honda available.

Ordered one of the first into the UK as a company car, it was brilliant. Interior quality was excellent, although not particularly inspired, but all the important touch points were top notch, Momo wheel, brilliant Recaro buckets, beautiful gearbox and titanium shifter … it was a great daily, which would barrel around fine and quietly, riding beautifully with the family loaded up. Then (generally when 1-up) it would transform into a delight, stuning handling, VTEC kick, glorious box … the grip was amazing with the LSD, but to get the best out of the steering it required the custom spec Bridgestone RE71's that Honda spec'ed, they brought the ride quality down a touch (stiff sidewalls) but they tightened the steering considerably again … had the devils own job every time I wore thru a set convincing the fleet mgmt that I/Honda had a single approved tyre (for what fleet just thought was a cooking "Accord"). Mine went back after 2yrs/70k and TBH I missed it for years after … would still rate it today as one of the best 3 box saloons ever made. Personally I'd want the high-level wing (it balances the looks) and an early gen-1 model like this one …

It came from the golden era of motoring - mid-90s to mid-00s - where cars were big enough but not the bloated boats we have today. The engines were a good mix of performance and economy, without all the fancy crap over complicating them. Just wish they'd done one with BTCC styling :)

Hi Jack. I had a 306 gti-6 back in the day which I replaced with an Accord type r. I really enjoyed the 306, it was fabulous but the accord was a truly special. The engine was sublime but in no way did it outshine the chassis.

I’ve always loved these, very understated Q car looks. I’d have one of these over a Peugeot without a doubt. The Peugeot may be slightly easier to live with as a daily driver as you don’t have to wring it’s neck to get the best out of it but the Accord will be a nicer place to be in.
@carlwilliams34882 жыл бұрын
I ran one for a couple of years and the one criticism I had was that the VTEC engagement was that high and combined with a gearbox that had a tendancy to baulk from 2nd to 3rd meant that sometimes that shift was missed and you'd drop out of the powerzone and it slowed quickly. When buying watch out for a dodgy 5th gear syncro as they fail and need a box rebuild but apart from that they are solidly built
@bispal2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it, they really are excellent, I really did prefer mine over my e39 M5. Stand out for me is that LSD that pulls you round the bends, as much as a thing as the vtec. I agree with Paul. The Accord Type R is a very, very well sorted car. Great steering, chassis and grip, even when pushing hard on wet roundabouts. Its not always about the VTEC engine. It will fall out of the power as if the gear ratios needed more thought. I hope there are still some about as I'd like to revisit it after 20 odd years.
@dts4392 жыл бұрын
Accord Type R is a great all rounder. You can drive it under the VTEC all day and its just another euro box saloon, but when the mood takes you you can get it into VTEC and have a blast. The LSD really works. As other people will say the VTEC range is tricky to stay in without going to the redline in each gear - if only they fitted a 6 speed box it would be perfect. I ended up getting mine on a bit of a whim as car I was meant to be buying fell through and I needed to pick up my parents from the airport. Ran it for 3 years and only replaced it when I needed an estate for family duties.

Agree with comments on tyres. A decent set should address the steering as from experience it was not significantly inferior to 306. In all other areas IMHO it was at least a match. The engine was superb and whilst the 306 did not lack in this area it couldn’t match the ATR. The diff was genius and provided incredible traction out of corners that modern hot hatches with their boosted torque simply cannot match. Not driven a better FWD car.

I've owned a couple, the steering feel and chassis is pretty special on them, definitely feels like a smaller car than it is. Vtec engagement is prominent, only think I would change is the gear ratios, maybe a shorter final drive to keep it on boil every change. Not everyone can keep them in the power band. I told myself I wouldn't own one again because they rust from the bulkhead which put me off tbh. Great car for the time especially when you consider its rivals. Oh and the catalytic converter on my first one got stolen aswell 🙄

Another great video Jack. I think these are great cars and a massive part of the appeal for me is that brilliant VTEC engine. I had a mildly modified 996 GT3 which revved to 8300rpm and have driven E46 M3's & Ferrari 355's which also require big revs to go fast. I prefer high revving normally aspirated engines to say a modern turbo charged engine where you can make brisk progress with little effort.

Honda all day long. I had a 'cooking' 1.8 SE Accord and loved revving it out to the VTEC, and the handling was good for a big car. Quality Swindon product of course! I believe they rust fairly badly especially around the bulkhead, so check that out carefully.

Oooooh, I had 3 Peugeot 306s. First a DTurbo, which was a hoot as there was a massive kick in the back as the turbo came on song, half way through the rev range. Then a 306 Rallye, which was slightly sharper than the GTi-6 but, without aircon or a sunroof was sweatier than the Black Hole of Calcutta when the sun came out. And alongside that, a 306 Roadster, which was a cabriolet with a factory hardtop to bolt on for the winter - almost as swift, but with scuttle shake. They all ensured that, for several years, driving anywhere put a smile on my face. If you get offered a decent GTi-6, take it - you won't regret it (just make sure the aircon works)

Hi Jack, well this reminds me of when I owned an Integra Type R and had a new baby so popped into Honda to test drive a Honda Accord Type R. Within 100 yds I knew it was pretty special and had a maturity that the Integra didn’t. Ultimately I stayed in the Integra but that’s another tale. Ref comments by @Mark, he has a point in that you have to rev the engine to get the best but lordly because it’s built for that it becomes a joy (ran the Integra as an everyday car for 2 years). Ref the corner situation I’d say that’s down to the driver overcommitting than a handling weakness of the Accord? Cheers, Kevin. .

I had the 2.0L (obviously non-R) Accord of this era for many years. Somewhere around 150bhp if I recall correctly. Nice car. OK to drive. Build quality was decent and it was pretty much bomb proof in terms of reliability. The only real weakness was that the engine was pretty gutless at lower rpms, and I used to joke that the AC pump must have taken about 50hp as it really seemed to sap the low end torque further. Never driven the Type R version but it looks like a nice improvement.

Absolutely agree about keeping the car at such a high rev level. If you've not really got much hooligan in you, it just feels wrong. It is nice to hit the VTEC going onto the dual carriageway though - doing it less frequently makes it more special when you do hit that range. It's perfectly quick for normal driving outside of the VTEC though I would say.

This was the car that made me switch from VWs to Hondas. All due to James Thompson running the Type R in the BTCC. Living in the states we never got this model, but I had to buy a then new 2001 Accord four door with a manual. I left the states for Australia in 2008 and couldn’t find a Type R. So many Euro Rs I wanted one, but Australian car prices were so high back then(and still are). Anyway, I recently bought an ‘06 Euro w/six speed manual and am still on the lookout for the proper CH Type R.

Yes. Go for it. I opted for an EP3 over one of these about 8 years ago. I wish I'd got the Accord. I'm now in a 7th gen Accord which is just sublime though not as quick as the Type R. As for why they are unloved, these were a European model only & don't score any kudos within the global Honda community. That's the beauty of Vtec engines. You have a 2 in 1 (everyday + race engine). Honda and Toyota also, they know how to make these things handle 7K rpms.... I have this same issue with the V8 Vantage, all the power is right up past 4k and develops peak power right to the red line (it too has variable valve timing). I wish the torque was lower down because like you, I don't like to keep ragging the engine to get that power although it does sound wonderful when doing it. Manifolds and sports cats fix that on this particular car and brings the torque in lower down the range because sometimes you want things a little more effortless. Always liked this shape of Accord, I think it's a handsome shape in the saloon form which is the one to have and who doesn't love the wheels on the Type R! Enjoy the GTi-6, I had the precursor to that car in the form of the very rare Citroen ZX 16v, a car I truly regret selling (along with my 300zx).

For me, the absolute requirement of a car is that it is reliable. That I don't have to buy, say, a new water pump when there already is one in the car. I assume it was included in the price, so I have already paid for one. Spending money on replacing parts is the least rewarding way I can think of to spend money. It shouldn't have to be your lucky day for you to get there and back again. So, the Honda it is, then.

When you said 'those series of corners' didn't you mean 'Jacks Bend' 😄. Another great video, thanks Jack, Bob M.

I know where you’re coming from with the revs I have an E 36 M3 Evo that likes being high up in the rev range especially in third gear but find it hard to drive it like that all the time as you think you’re going to kill it but at the end of the day it’s made for
@superduper12542 жыл бұрын
The accord revs much easier and is happier to stay high in the revs. Being fwd it's very different to the e36 and much easier to drive flat out.

Got my vote yes! Great sounding engine. Does it have special seam welding like the Integra? Accords have great build quality.
@MrGrentch2 жыл бұрын
Though it's often repeated and became Fact(tm) on the internet, the Integras weren't seam welded. Though they had thicker panels in some areas and extra welds. The EK9 Civic R had some seam welding alright.

While I love Hondas, if you get one your videos will show the regular servicing of the car and maybe some rust proofing. If you want to generate a ton of videos, well you do have the Ferrari. Maserati is also good, meaning very bad. You should go with the Honda and have one dependable car in your life.

Hi Jack just come across your channel great content on the Honda fabulous cars and I subscribed.

What a great car. The wing back recaros and screaming Vtec make you feel like a racing driver. The rear spoiler wing is missing. 🥹That’s what makes it a Type R..😎

Killer for these was the insurance. I got quoted £3k for one when my MR2 was £400!

My job gave me an Audi TT 225 BAM in 2001. I got on the M1 slip road at Wakefield A638 with a Honda Accord Type R up my arse and we both wanted to have a laugh. I swear to go I could not get rid of that guy and we wound up pulling alongside and showing respect. His car was better. Great video Number 27.

hi jack, this is not a "daily" , nice for a weekend blat about, but poor mpg, no auto ac, no satnav, very little airbags, + age - related problems like corroded petrol tank, failing suspension bushes, corroded brake pipes etc rule it out as a daily. find something 6 ish yo, all the toys + diesel. there are plenty of capable diesels out there, have a go, you might be surprised.... i hope it didnt hurt too much coming back to ground, keep up the good work young man

If you were lucky enough to find a tidy 306 GTi, you could even have Lynx Engineering build you a Carillo rodded engine, supercharged for 400 BHP and make a few modern hyperhatches seem a bit boring by comparison. The centrifugal chargers they use don't invoke a crazy amount of torque steer.

i have a lynx high boost 306 gti6 420bhp the cost of getting that conversion done now would be through the roof Rich at lynx is also a nightmare to get a hold of aswell, and its defo not a car you would want to daily its a pig in traffic peak boost is at 5.2 to 5.5k rpm and by the time your up there your losing your license as a track car great, for a road car defo not practical it can drink £30 quid of fuel in about 15minutes if your giving it the right pedal and it doesnt like sitting in traffic for any length of time even with the cooling fans on high speed.

I wouldn’t have a vtec again,got fed up thrashing it and it drank petrol when you did.They do look good in red with a little rear wing on the back.

The CL7 Euro R is the better buy. The CL1 comes with a Electric Power Steering, hence the numb steering feel. They dropped it in the CL7. Not to mention the newer K20 in the CL7

I considered one of these back in the day under a company car scheme. The racket from the engine and the lack of a hatch ruled it out for me.

Coming from NZ I'm so confused with this car, I've never seen it before. We have all the JDM cars here in NZ as used imports. There's two cars I've driven that could be similar, both brilliant. The CL1 Torneo/Accord Euro-R with the H22A vtec motor with 240hp, and the quite different CL7 Accord Euro-R with the K20A at around 217hp. My pick was the CL1. I'm fascinated what this actually is, we had something badged as a Rover here that looks similar.
@endlesstwisties2 жыл бұрын
This was made in Uk. For Europe only. Mechanically is similar to Prelude. H22 engine and similar suspension. European Civic Aerodeck / Fastback are the smaller brothers of this

@@endlesstwisties I thought the accord Euro R had the f20b
@64-bitMicro2 жыл бұрын
@@mrsquishyboots We had a JDM import that was very similar to the CL1 Accord/Torneo Euro-R called the Torneo SiR-T that had the f20b engine, but not the carbon backed recaro seats and trim of the Euro-R. I believe it may have been rarer. While I haven't driven the f20b car, many have told me that it was a favourable vehicle on track with a slightly different weight distribution to the h22a although lower power output.
@mrsquishyboots2 жыл бұрын
@@64-bitMicro even when K series were available ive seen people choose the f20b in their show cars due to its rarity
@endlesstwisties2 жыл бұрын
@@mrsquishyboots it has H22 but slightly more power than the regular Prelude. 212hp. Lsd gearbox and body reinforcement from factory. Basically was a very limited street edition made by Honda because they needed the homologation of the race version. Anyone comparing this with a Peugeot or other car in the same budget is very naive
