I would suggest using mungyo as the underpainting and add the sennelier for the pops. It stretches the product and helps the pocket book.

I am a beginner and I'm thinking of just getting the gallery pastels because, for a 72 count, it's much cheaper and I won't feel bad using it. I'll most likely invest in something more expensive at a later time!

Yes, if budget is a restriction, Gallery is the better option. It is safe to get a smaller Sennelier set at first. Because some artist don't like Sennelier... It's creaminess is a problem to some... They do have test packs of 6 colors. It's worth trying that out first to see if you really like the medium. Personally, I got hooked almost instantly and I never looked back. I still use other oil pastel brands too though.

I rarely, if not never, use Sennelier in a full painting. Sennelier is meant to be used over a base painting. My base is usually watercolor or acrylic but it is okay to use a harder oil pastel brand for the base and then put the highlights and details on top using Sennelier. I will do a separate video on that. Sennelier oil pastels do not layer too well. It's because they are super creamy, so if you try to apply more than 2 layers, usually, it becomes a muddy pulp. Also, those pigments are precious, pricey, and super vibrant. They are meant to go on top of a base painting. I have seen a lot of artists attempting to use Sennelier right from the get-go and then getting frustrated with the poor results and also wasting a lot of pastels. As for fixatives, I don't use any. I put my oil pastel paintings inside transparent cases to preserve them. Sennelier usually harden overnight so you need to let a fresh painting sit for a while before putting them inside covers. Found 4 sticks of 20 year old Sennelier, they were intact where Faber-Castells had whitened & badly hardened. Also, Sennelier has stupendous colors.

Interesting! Thanks for doing the test for us. I live in the tropics and used to do a similar test but strangely, I did not notice any burns. But honestly, I'm not sure Mungyo is lightfast. If they are, they would advertise it more publicly on their websites or leaflets. There's no lightfast info in their products, which kind of tells me that they are not big on that.

I just bought a tin of Caran D’Ache Neocolor II water soluble wax pastels. I would have loved a box of thirty or larger but settled on the box of 15. I’m starting out using wax pastels so I bought the set of 15. If I need to I can buy extra pastels open stock. I’m not that good at drawing or coloring but I enjoy what I do.

You actually need both. You need to start with Mungyo which are a bit harder, build your first layers, and then finish up with the softer Sennelier.

Wait! Mungyo has extra cover to protect the pastel si they won't fall off like. And Mungyo has 120 in wooden box also. The price gap between ghis two is so big so Sennelier really is expected to perform well. I'm not sure about Sennelier, I want to get a set but it's super hot in my country like most of the time. Does it melt?

@@ohsfer11820 hello 😊Thanks for the comment. Sennelier doesn't melt unless you put it in the sun. Store it in a cool place. I live in a warm tropical country too. I keep mine in a cooler darker place. And yes, mungyo offers a 120 set too. It wasn't as popular at the time of this video. Mungyo is a good affordable alternative to sennelier but honestly, it doesn't compare to sennelier in quality. At the end of the day, if you can afford the pricier brand, it will be worth the money. If not, mungyo is a good investment too.

The one annoying problem with Sennelier when your add the color to the paper the pastel itself will slide up in the paper sleeve, leaving very little of the tip of the pastel, then from back of the pastel you have to push the pastel back down.

Hello! I use color pencils to draw small details. They can be soft pastel pencils or wax-based ones like Prismacolor. The soft pigment of those pencils usually stick to oil pastel pigments... You can also dissolve oil pastel pigments in a solvent (turpentine or Linseed oil will do) and make a paint/paste and use a painting brush to draw details, just as you are using oil paint. I have tried both these methods and they work fine. Hope that helps! Happy painting :)

You should review Caran d'Ache Neopastels (oil pastels). I love working with them and would like your opinion on them. They're my go to when I do not want to use my sennelier ones. I also play around with Master's touch premium soft oil pastels, for my doodles. They are also creamy and pigmented.. but a tiny bit Crumbly.. that's the only thing wrong with them. I haven't tried mungyo ones yet, so idk how they compare to them. Also, what's your opinion on pastel Pencils? I just ordered mine. I had just a black one to do line work, but I'm excited about the Pencils coming in. I got the Caran d'Ache ones.

They are selling in wooden box, they are coming with 120 beautiful colours now from Busan of South Korea, if you are looking for them very well, you can pay 119$ Canadian only! I bought my third sets of wooden box lately in September 2021. Theirs colors range are lovely, as compromise you can bought the set of 76 oil pastels called Néopastel of Caran d’Ache for half price of # 120 Sennelier! @@DeshArt Thank you to answer me with diligence! In fact, the wooden box of Mungyo Gallery extra soft is not the same than the Mungyo for Artists. The Gallery one is higher quality than the Mungyo Artists. I am having personally 92 Sennelier bought by unity and 25 Sennelier (the big ones for 200$ Canadian) from a closing store. But, I don’t use them very much the Sennelier, because I want to make them last by using them sparingly! They are so much pricy as you are well knowing it! I am using my Mungyo Gallery in the impressionist style mainly and the result is astonishing, because I am using the stippling technique which it makes my mixing palette colors just like oil painting. I have learning this technique from Wunemo on KZbin with his instructive tutorials. Meanwhile, I am very impressed by the way you are using the Mungyo oil pastel watersoluble. I am having a set of regular 24 and the set of 24 iridescent ones too. I would love to mastering how to use them better, because I would love to combine it with my Mungyo Gallery as well as the use of my Néopastel II and my set of 76 aquarellable Museum pencils of Caran d’Ache! Sennelier: box remains in perfect colour order, Mungyo: colour order, what is that😂 seriously though I’m a hobbyist, not that talented, and never plan on selling my work, even though I could afford the expensive set it’s not worth it for me. I’d say if you’re not sure which to get start with mungyo and buy a few senneiler open stock to see if you like them before shelling out for a box.

Haha! Since Mungyo set is smaller, I give it less attention. It's easy to sort through those colors. Plus the Sennelier set "demands" better care. Lol. It's funny! Yes, I totally agree with you. Couldn't have said it better myself. I don't recommend putting all that money for the biggest set of the most expensive oil pastels without first trying out a few colors and experimenting. Sennelier offers test packs. Some people don't like how Sennelier feels so it's always better to try a few.

Yes! You can use a less expensive oil pastel for the first layers and use Sennelier only for the top-most part. You can also do the underpainting using Acrylic or watercolor and use Sennelier for the final layer. That way, your painting will look like a professional oil painting. @@reneekroyer5104 Pental is a good brand but children's grade and not supposed to be lightfast. It's a great option to be used for bottom layers. If you are not painting to sell, it's one of the best options out there. My fav brands are Pental, Mungyo, and then Sennelier, in that order with a huge gap between Sennelier and the other two brands. Sennelier is superior in a lot of ways. Having said that, Sennelier is also very creamy and pricy so Pental is a great alternative. You can even use pental along with Mungyo.

my main problem is that I run out of specific colors in my mungyo set and they just so happen to be ones that are only in the bigger sets. There's no way to buy single colors, unlike sennelier. However, I layer a lot and I find mungyo is lot better for that. At this point I'm forcing myself to use up colors I don't like just so i can justify buying a whole new set...

It seems that they do have very good light fastness as well, I believe there are write ups about the light fastness standard. Korea generally employs best practices and high quality workmanship. The Artist quality Mungyo oil pastels are more expensive here in Canada generally speaking. Senneliers are generally more costly too here. It's difficult to get these products right now.

You have clearly made a very substantial financial investment in Sennelier. So, it’s understandable that you seem invested in making them better on minor points like the wrapper or the reds not being the same. Mungyo has many more colors, including reds that you don’t own. So, saying their reds are not as good is unfair. You did not mention how loose Sennelier’s wrappings are or that not being able to layer is a major downside to doing entire works with them. Enjoy your Sennelier’s. I’m sure they are lovely. But this video seemed unfairly biased.

I only spent 10$ for this set of Sennelier. It was bought using a gift voucher after reading 100s of reviews on what a good oil pastel brand is. It was a good investment, but I did not pay for it off my pocket and my reviews are not based on how much money I spent on the set. I don't have the Mungyo 72 set but are you saying they offer more brighter reds in those bigger sets? Because a lot of artists believe that Mungyo oil pastels have whites added into some pigments to get that opaque consistency. This is generally how you get opaque colors. So naturally, the brightness of the colors is dulled a little. This is a prominent drawback of Mungyo... As I said in the review, for a mid-range oil pastel brand, Mungyo is probably the best. But it is not a substitute to Sennelier.

Oh and I also prefer the wrapping style of Sennelier. Loose but not falling off the pastel. It's perfectly user-friendly... All these factors contribute to it being a high-end brand. :)

My observation has been that sellers of Mungyo make a lot of false claims in their poorly described listings which made me back away from this brand. They are not professional as some listings claim and it’s obvious they have more binder than Sennelier or Caran D’Ache which I prefer over Sennelier for color selection alone. Anything lacking in a shade can be made up by individual pastels of another brand. I practice with Pentel or Faber Castell which to me seem as good if not better than Mungyo and are comparable in pricing.

@@loati94 I regretted buying Mungyo and would gladly swap for either Pentel of Faber Castell if I could. I just the other day received a box of Paul Rubins pastels which I am impressed with and think they are worth the cost. They seem good quality from what I can tell, the colors are magnificent, and each pastel is much larger than a standard oil pastel. All in all a decent value, but the only thing of theirs I’ve purchased in the past were a few watercolor journals which were nice but nowhere as nice as Etchr which was all I knew of them as I had enough watercolor paints to pass on theirs. Usually if a company makes a decent paper they make other quality products but as it turns out Meeden was the paper Etchr uses so it’s hard knowing a thing until you try it which makes these videos such a great value to me.

I love Myngyo for practice and play, but if I were doing portraits to last I would use Sennelier, just like when I use Caran D'ache Luminance and Derwent Lightfast for portrait work in colored pencil work instead of Poly Chromos or Prisma, there is a huge difference in quality and durability (lightfast) over time.

Actually Polychromos are for Professional artists. These are very good and a little bit harder. If its hardness is a case then ok but I cannot agree to consider them worst (like in this case Gallery oil pastels). Polychromos are on top of brands as well.

I have seen some lovely paintings using the Gallery oil pastels, really vibrant. If you're selling your work you need a lightfast medium, but otherwise the Mungyo are good value. I have Sennelier and I get through them fast - there's a lot to be said for starting out with a good mid-range price option!
