I'm still learning basic about collecting gold coins in general and you're videos are precious to us newbies from Europe. Thank you and keep good work. Best regards from Croatia.

Hello Numistacker, Thank you for this video . You summed me up in a nutshell. I used to collect old British pre-decimal coins when I was a child. Dirty old Victorian 1d coins. Now I have a fair bit of spare money , I have just taken the plunge and have started to buy gold bullion coins. I done the maths and I have around £7K spare money each Year after all my outlays. I LOVE your comment. You can store a lot of money value of gold in a small space. Thank you for your video's

Some Gold and Silver as part of a 'wealth portfolio' is fine and likely to at least break you even over the long term... Plus, if a big crash ever comes you've got something to trade. You can't trade part of your house, or part of your car, but you can always trade a few coins or precious metal bars...

great video for us newbies starting off in the serious coin collecting game. ive collected since a young boy, recently in the last few years i have collected many different coins, from silver celtic, to medieval hammered coins, though i really like my victorian soverign and half. i have purchased 2 gold american coins, a 2.5 indian, and a 5 dollar indian. id love to be able to build my collection upto a good standard, i had an accident a few years ago and needed two spine operations so i now have so much time to really study numismatics properly. ive not sold any of my coins, i vowed not to ever sell...however im starting to think down the line of selling some of my ancient coins, like my listers head silver unit, some hammereds and some of my roman silvers to then invest in some more gold. thanks for sharing your knowelege, absolutely brilliant videos.

1) Good thoughts and advice ! Thanks ! People with a low budget tend to buy fractional gold but the premium goes up substantially ! As much as possible I think the 1oz coins are a better bet. 2) I bought a few platinum coins but I regret. There is nothing "magical" in them like in the yellow gold :-) If platinum price ever goes back up in parity with gold in what is left of my lifetime I would sell them all...

There's good reasons to buy and own both silver and gold and for each person, those reasons will vary based on numerous factors. With silver, I can readily diversify into high premium numismatics....with gold, not so much since the base price is so much higher to begin with. There definitely is a fair argument to make in terms of now being a good time to buy silver since the GSR is around 80. And yes, that's not to say that the GSR can't go and stay higher but I believe when the next significant move in PM's takes place, silver will mover much higher (% wise) than gold....the GSR will drop noticeably during during that time.

great points numistacker. I love gold. what's not to love about it? I don't like how silver can develop spots. I have quite a few collectible silver pieces, and I'm very paranoid about them having white spots at some point in the future, which as we know will destroy the collectibility of the coin. There is nothing like gold. The yellow shiny stuff. Wow. Oh, and I do have some cryptos. I've been buying litecoin lately. Just couldn't resist...hoping to strike it rich. Lol. It's play money.

Do silver Britannia's from different years have the same variety as gold? I think they have less variety, but I'm not sure. It looks like the really nice designs are only in gold. I was going to collect 1/10 oz gold Britannia's. First I am catching up collecting 2 oz silver Queen's Beasts this month. So can I get a greater variety of Britannia designs collecting 1/10 oz gold ones than 1 oz silver?

There was some design philosophy change at some point in that series where the BU silver design stopped changing. IIRC they moved the rotating design philosophy over to the proof silver coins which had a limited mintage. Are those modern silver proof designs the same as the gold designs? Those might be fun to collect.

Gold definitely has so nany good properties over silver but silver does have a greater potential imo. I've got some gold coins all fractional and just picked up a 1/10 brit at a good price. Gold i holding for the long term and silver mostly i plan to offload when time is right. Fact there's no vat makes it better than silver where you pay around a 40 / 50% premium. Even fractional gold better value. I do plan to buy bigger pieces as premium even lower. But good deals can be found often on 1/20 oz proofs at cheaper than current bullion releases. As long as its not a panda. Having a limited budget means choices have to be made and in most cases when comes to gold i do see real value in cgt free stuff. As at some point i may look to unload it all and cgt free helps in that scenario.

Nice video. I prefer gold over silver too. Gold isn't necessarily as 'stress-free' as a slab of poured silver though. One 'pitfall' I exprienced; I once ordered some gold pandas from Apmex while I was living oveseas, but even though the plastic sleeve containing the 1 oz Panda ofcourse is completely transparent , customs still had to cut open the plastic sleeve. A broken sleeve in theory makes the coin harder to sell as many potential buyers prefer to buy it in its original sleeve. Some coin dealer in Australia even sell pandas unsleeved for less than the sleeved ones. That raised the silly question, do keep my broken plastic sleeve around as its somehow 'valuable' by perception of others. I chucked it out and put it into airtights, but now thinking if that broken piece of plastic somehow was worth money to protect the premium! Ironic, all the tremendous work from digging it out of the ground to refinery and it comes down to a piece of plastic flap that's worth fractions of a cent. I plan to keep my gold for decades which also makes me think how the plastic sleeve it comes in would age if an un-sleeved Gold Panda is snubbed by the potential buyers, doesnt seem like permanent storage quality. Gold also oxides! or atleast stains, it's true, small red stains can develop over time. It has happened both on my maples and even on 1 oz cast gold bars bought on location from the Perth mint. Perhaps it has something to do with air moisture, no idea. I would love to buy some nuismatic, but what do i do after receiving my expensive graded coin and one of these red dots starts to appear. It would have to be re-graded or treated costing money. Even if we all agree that the red dots on non nuismatic gold doesnt affect the value, that's in theory, in reality when selling time comes up, why would someone be inclinded to buy a red dotted piece of gold when they can just buy a shiny new one ? could be harder to sell unless agree on a lower price. So that's some of the arguments why gold isnt completely stress free! Having said that, I still love Prescious Metals no doubt and this stress is nothing compared to holding the darn bitcoins! haha

Great video and interesting point about rarities vs say "common coins". When is a rarity a rarity? When there aren't very many and those that exist are in collectors hands! Take the 1937 George VI Sovereign for example - rare? Not so much in my book - go to any coin fair and you will always find several for sale - but at a price! I have my own list of rarities based on a lot of research and observation and talking to others but in general I concur that a rarity generally, over time, will outperform. I find Ebay an interesting barometer of the way the market is going - some great discussion points again in the video - gets the grey cells ticking over!

+SovTracker my view was more about levels of interest watching numbers of bids and watches. It seems the more interesting and distinctive a coin is the safer it is to buy. 1937 is interesting because it’s highly desirable without really being rare. Same goes for 1989. Some real rarities are so rare they are on nobody’s radar.

Silver is nicknamed the devils metal . But I like gold back in 2003 you could buy an ounce for 300 or less ,spot was $252 I should have backed up the truck . It's hard to decide what to collect modern bullion or early coins I like sov's and pre 1933 U.S. but they are so expensive for better dates. I heard lately they have been melting common dates down into bars , but you're right ,you don't collect them to make money unless you're a dealerBut planning is the biggest problem ,you have to decide quickly what you want to collect or you end up with a lot of stuff you don't want.

I think you can 'collect' gold coins without paying large premiums for proofs, sovereigns for example have a great range of years and mints from Canada, Great Britain, India and Australia. If you have enough cash to buy 2 or 3 dates you haven't got at no high premium then you don't have to pay for a high premium for just one less easily available.

harryzero 156 there is a lot on the market that you can buy without paying a collectors premium and Sovereigns are one of those great areas where a huge variety of types and dates are available at Bullion.

@@Numistacker nice to meet you. I have a quick question if you don't mind. I'm looking to make my first panda purchases and I have the years picked but I can't figure out if I should pay up for ms69. I want to be assured I'm getting a good coins from an online dealer and that seems like the only way to do it. The catch is I like my coins out of the packaging and I will be breaking the plastic open to enjoy the coins. Am I crazy? Seems like the only way to guarantee a great product is to get it in ms69 condition. I know it loses the collector value out of the plastic but I may never sell them. In the end all I want is coins that are in great shape. Oh ya, the dealer, apmex, won't take a picture and of course the pics are not the actual coins.
@Numistacker

The rule with Pandas is to buy them in unmessed up omp. Opening the original packaging loses cash and breaking out loses cash. Better to just collect in as sold and not buy in capsules or flips

@@Numistacker Thanks. I ended up changing my objectives from that of a collector to more of a bullion purchaser. I therefore went with maple leafs, AE's, the koog's and some others. When you talk about high value, old enought coin, the composition of the coin is not really important no ? I mean, a copper coin can easely worth several times his weight in gold ( same thing whit a silver and gold coin ) no ? P.s this amazing proof 1911-1937 gold coins... wow! 😍

I have a Numismatist (Coin Collector) for over 45 years!! I have bought, sold and traded everything coin related... I was into slabbed coins....I had coins slabbed.... My advice would be to stay away from slabbed coins..... They go nowhere in price.... PCGS and NGC have their own price guides.... Which is what they think their coins should be worth... but there not. Also If you have a slabbed coin the price is related to how coins are graded in each grade... and those numbers change.... and so does the price of the coin. STEER CLEAR OF SLABBED COINS....
@Numistacker
@Numistacker 6 жыл бұрын
+Jim Beekman interesting perspective and thanks for the comments. What types of coins did you slab that went nowhere in price compared to the raw coin? Might be worth taking a look at Heritage coin value history for say a 10 year period?
@drjqool
@drjqool 5 жыл бұрын
i say buy slab only if u really like the coin and want to ensure u got the coin in a great condition. more for your own collection and not worry too much about price. if it's used as price, BU is best.
@CONTENDER791
@CONTENDER791 5 жыл бұрын
I couldnt disagree more. Youre buying a PCGS or NGC coin for the security of knowing the coin is authentic , and for knowing the coin is in fact BU and graded accordingly, Try getting the best price for a raw coin that youre trying to sell as a MS65 or MS66. No buyer will trust that the coin is actually that. When I say buy slabbed coin I am talking about PRE 1933 Gold.
