Concerning the crystal. I would cut some off the base to flatten it so you can stand it vertically as a specimen then cut a few pendant size pieces from the excess.

When you find yourself paying more and more for basic commodities, it is not the prices going up, but a reflection of the debasement of the currency you find yourself obliged to use.

Nice clear piece, there’s lots of smaller pieces out there that would cut nice gems, I’d keep it for now and if down the track you want to cut it, it’s still there. Cut it now, it’s gone. Love that zircon pendant beautiful Cliff

It is not a quartz specimen of the quality from the Alps, or Arkansas, so cut the bugger. I would like to see you facet the largest gem you can out of that crystal. The bigger, the better, ...

i would say cut, the piece looks to be heavily damaged already and is not worth keeping it as a specimen, i would however take a photo of it before cutting it up and framing the photo and putting it next to the finished stones

Long time viewer!! Your videos got me into gem cutting as a hobby! Thank you! My vote is both!! You could separate the uglier bottom third-or-so and facet a very large gem or two! You could keep the top two thirds-or-so to admire. It would have a flat so it would stand upright on a shelf?

This was a nice show and that large crystal is amazing. You should keep it as a specimen and just admire it. Would love to have a crystal that size. Would be criminal to cut it. Thank you cliff

Since the termination is so severely damaged, I would say it would be a much more attractive specimen if it were cut. And while it does have some inclusions, I might even make an argument for still trying to get one huge stone (maybe a n emerald cut, scissor cut, or baguette) and let the inclusion stay in there as a conversation piece. But if you're against leaving an inclusion in the finished stone (or it could lead to problems when faceting), then I'd say at least go for a few smaller (but still large) stones. Of course, I live in the US, not far from the quartz mines in Arkansas, so clear quartz like this is not as rare a find here, so my opinion is somewhat biased. Either way, it's a gorgeous mineral and it's going to brighten up any room in which it sits.

Great video tour Cliff. Bit jealous of some of the prices that flashed by. The prices at Sydney shoes over the last three years has really climbed steadily. Often “competitive prices” in Sydney shows are on items which are next to impossible to use for lapidary projects . Hope things improve this year. I have 2 shows the next two weekends in Sydney so I guess I will see what the lay of the land is going to be like in 2024.

I would probably cut a small piece out of it and make a few "medium" sized gems, so I'd have my gems AND a large piece of quartz!

Don't. Seriously, don't. I've done that mistake before, and big quartz like that are a lot more beautiful as specimen display piece compared to being cut as gem. Even if all you did is smooth the surface facets following the already-existing ones, it would make the stone looks terribly fake and cheap. Not to mention, to shape it you'd need to waste a lot of mass...

I tend to think if they can't be bothered to price anything I can't be bothered to buy any of it I am inclined to leave it as is, from a view point of a collector its a fantastic piece but it doesnt have any natural points so that makes me feel more ok about cutting it. Without holding it I am only talking by look, holding it, it may be completely different story it may be a a phenomenal piece of quartz and speak of other things. Beautifuul pendant, you did the stone justice. Compared to the quartz what did that stone look like, I presume it was a rough messy little thing and you couldnt see much of anything through it....which leads me back to thinking dont cut the big one , even broken its an incredibly rare piece to find a crystal that size without inclusions. probably not much help but thats my thinking . thanks for taking us along ....if I ever find a nice piece of Anglesite (I live near Parys mountain) I'll keep you in mind

I'd cut it. I bought a fist-sized chunk of Optical Quartz from Columbia for $15 Canadian and another for about $30 years earlier. Clear Quartz whether it's considered "Optical" or not, is pretty common and thus not that expensive. The fact that your big chunk was largely broken even though it has a few natural faces, is perfect for faceting. You could always cut it in half, put one half on the window sill or cabinet and facet the rest. :)

Prices are high in the US too in my opinion. I would cut that gem, maybe it is because I am in US but that price seemed fair to me for quartz with imperfect faces.

Don't cut! If you would just cut it into smaller pieces, then just start with smaller gems. It's a great example of a Before state.

I would cut the crystal. And those vendors that don't price there goods are annoying. They do the same thing here in the USA. Enjoyed the video!🎉

No the markets in the states seem to be saturated and the prices are very inflated. I'm using more lab grown because of it. Not to mention the color palete available in Nanosittal.

I would try to cut one huge crystal out of it. I would end up like something that would go on a royal crown. Just saying. You would know what is best. I support your final decision. Just send me a picture of it, if you make a huge stone.
