Also to avoid eye pokes, once when I was competing in a club vs club comp. My opponent had a faulty glove, and they got D’Q’d as they poked me in the eye and couldn’t see for about 5mins lol

Another reason for that strap is also for safty but during combat, back in the days wasn't rare to blind your opponent's eye using your free thumb. it was a dirty boxing tactics

I got the top boxer old school style boxing gloves a little while back without a thumb strap and a generally more opened up palm and it's done worlds for my style, allows me to be way more creative in big glove sparring and implement more techniques. Highly recommend though they weren't cheap

Broke my wrist using mma gloves because of my thumb getting caught and snapping back. Perfect boxers fracture. That fracture prevented me from shipping out to boot camp. Arguably a very lucky break.

After about a year of doing muay thai i cut mine so i could open my hand, to catch kicks/ make clenching easier, basically just so id be able to grab stuff. I highly recomend it as long as your gloves arent super soft, then i could see your thumb bending back. I use those dense ass everlast gloves that feel like fkn memory foam so theres no way my thumb could bend back lol

I recommend cutting the strap. If you learn proper punching mechanics then your thumb is a non issue. But the big issue with the strap is it has been known to catch on peoples ears when they slip a punch and even tear the ear from the head. So idk I’d rather break my own thumb out of negligence vs cutting my sparring partner or opponent’s ear off his head.

I do karate, soo I have learn that you have hit whit the first two knuckles, but whit gloves the tumb is not down, soo hurt my tumb and I have to strike whit the middle knuckles. Soo I am gonna cut it💪🏻🥋

Really depends on the glove. Obviously you haven't tried Top King gloves. They have the stiffest wrist support of any glove I've ever tried. Maybe good for beginners, but it took me a lot of getting used to and I never really grew to like it, though I did get used to it.

Normally i agree with you but not this time. Some foam is more flexible but a lot of foam actually tears/breaks when you open them to wide. Just open up one of your boxing gloves you dont use and want to throw away, take out the foam and see it for yourself.
