Point to diesel: Wedging a truck + trailer, especially a long trailer, into a gas station can be dicey. Most are designed for cars and not rigs that large. Diesel gets you into the big truck lanes for refilling, which can have their own problems, but maneuvering space isn't one. Point to gas: 1) If you're a weekend camper and otherwise daily commute your big new diesel to/from work, you're going to run into the scenario where you arrive at your destination in the middle of a regen cycle and have to wait with the truck running (or keep driving around) for the regen to complete. Stop and go driving loads up the DPF and it's going to regen when it needs to regen, whether it's convenient for you or not. 2) Modern gas engines, I'm talking Ford 7.3L, GM 6.6L, and even Ram 6.4L (the old man of the group), aren't yesterdays gas engines. They all make great power/torque and coupled to a modern multi-speed transmissions (10-speed for Ford/GM and 8-speed for Ram), the towing experience is solid. It's not the old days of a 260hp Triton 5.4L in front of a 4R100 4-speed, downshifting at every highway overpass. The ratio spread in a 10-speed transmission gives many more options to put the engine right where it needs to be in the torque curve.

Spot on Josh!!! In the last 5-7 years the new gas engine/transmission combos have changed the game. They have moved the weight where you start wanting/needing a diesel from around 10k lbs to around 15k lbs. My single rear wheel F-350 with the 7.3 and 4.3 gears handles my 14k lb Brinkley Z3100 very well and I’ve got plenty of payload at 4204lbs. These gasses are perfect for most RVs. EPA emissions rules have ruined the diesel engine. If you’re only towing a 5th wheel the new Ford 7.3L gas with 4:30 gears in a 1 ton has an over 20K# tow capacity and has no issue doing it. Chevy and dodge are coming with revamped heavy haul gas motors as well. There are dozens of videos out their with guys towing heavy loads in the Rocky's with the 7.3L gas motor with no issues. I'll add one thing that was not covered in this video that is a win for the gas motor. When, not if the emission gear fails on the diesel you're looking at $10-15K to repair or replace it. Really if anything fails on the diesel the repair bill is usually north of $10K. A failed injection pump can be a $20K repair bill and they all basically run the same injection pump from Bosch. It sucks! The EPA has ruined them.

Gas engines aren't cheap on repairs now days either. On an F150 running the 3.5 Ecoboost my extended warranty just paid $4K to replace the cam phasers at 61,000 miles. This truck only towed a 7K trailer occasionally and it still broke. 🙂

Thank you Josh! Just bought my first Diesel. Ram 2500 w/ Cummins. I was absolutely SHOCKED at how low the payload was! I expected to be able to pull anything in the world with a 2500 Diesel!!! I felt MANLY! (Honestly GM w/ similar engine has much better payload but a MUCH stiffer ride so we went willingly to the Dodge. Rides like a cloud w/ Coil Springs) We only get about 2100 lbs. of payload. Our BRINKLEY TT is right at 11K lbs. loaded and 1100 lbs. tongue weight. With 120 lb. WD Hitch, Passengers and bikes in the truck bed, we only have about 225 lbs. of payload to spare! ALL THAT SAID, having towed with a gas Hemi for 20 years, this truck wins for 1.) Ease of using truck lanes is almost worth ANY hassle of having a Diesel. 2.) T O R Q U E ! Smooths out the ride! No ROAR of mega revving going up a mild incline. 3.) Not sure HOW but our 2500 Ram Diesel Big Horn was on fire sale and was priced only 3K more $ than the comparable 2500 Gas. We were able to get the Diesel for about the same price. 4.) and finally, All of my friends have Diesels so now I can sit at the cool kids table! :-)

Gas vs Diesel is simple on a few fronts.......RV weight first. A lot of fifth wheels will exclude gas right from the bat. But then if you have a lighter fifth wheel like we do in a Grand Design 28BH, a gas like our F250 7.3 gas will easily tow it. Then you have to think on other equipment you may tow on a daily or weekly basis, you may need a diesel. But for most of us that do have a RV we get a HD/SD truck for specifically doing that work only. Remember this..........once the warranty is over, a diesel cost you way more than gas in the shop. And the other thing some don't understand.......not all diesel mechanics are created equal! I good one will cost you per hour as compared to the dude that barely passed diesel school....just sayin folks! Ask me how I know! So.....me it is RV PIN weight and total weight compared to the trucks payload and tow rating as compared to the gasoline truck or diesel truck's rating. There are a few other considerations I plug in but these are the most basic you look at. We had a RV dealer trying to tell us a EcoBoost 6 would tow a big ole trailer. Well, maybe so for a bit, but longevity and with heavy duty brakes and suspension I knew a Super Duty was the way to go and have more truck than I would ever need.

I pull my 34' 8000lb travel trailer occasionally during the camping season. The truck isn't my daily driver. Before my current truck, I had a 2012 F-250 with the 6.7 diesel. I got used to pulling with a diesel and didn't want to change that with my new truck. I know that 7.3 godzilla would do just fine for my towing needs, but again, personal preference.

I went with a Ram 2500 with 6.4 gas and 8 speed transmission for our 30 foot travel trailer they we tow around 7k loaded. It'll climb the steepest freeways at 65mph if you really want it to but I don't need to go that fast.... Just keep it with the trucks doing a respectable speed. It was $10,000 less than the same truck with a diesel and diesel emissions system on a Ram sounds like a nightmare.... Also diesel 2500 with a 10k payload capacity leaves you with 1800 to 2200 pounds payload... Mine has 3400 pounds payload capacity

we switched from 3/4 gas to 3/4 diesel a couple of years ago. One of the factors i enjoy is ease of fueling using trucker pumps. Lot of stations have the pumps facing the building making approach or exit of the pumps difficult. Especially if it is a busy station. Diesel has created a much less stressful travel day in ease of fueling as well as overall ease of towing. 30ft TT 11,000 to 12,000 lbs. I used to try and get a run going down hills with the gas truck would not downshift so hard trying to go up the next hill. (Iowa midwest not Mountains). We pretty much only use it to tow the RV. Nice video.

My advice is if you know your getting a truck and you know your going to tow anything , get the heaviest duty truck you can get. Meaning in most applications a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton. I say this because even if your towing a small trailer, the bigger trucks handle the trailer so much better, bigger brakes, heavier axles, heavier frame and it will make a small trailer like nothing is there. I prefer diesel because you get better mpg towing. When I go on a trip I can go way farther on less dollars even at a higher price of diesel fuel.
@chrisbalough81965 ай бұрын

FOR ME, it is a Ram 2500 Hemi. My truck is primarily for towing the loaded 7K 800/900 tongue weight and I do not want to deal with the logistics of Diesel. Having run into the payload limitations of a half ton (1500) Ram, I also don't want to deal with THAT issue which can arise with an HD Diesel. So, I'm doing around 10K miles a year primarily towing and some light offroading while camping along with some transfer stations duties. I also have a 3060 lb payload and a 15K max tow capability. I am good to go... My daily driver is a Gladiator which is perfect for more heavy duty off roading locally and most trash runs to the transfer station. So, FOR ME, it's gas. Oh, and maybe soon to be gone, but I love the Hemi rumble... 392 cubic inches of gas sucking power.

That being said, we were going really roomy (in RV and in truck seating-family of 5) and needed a dually to give us the capacity, and that is where diesel won for us.
@davidcantrell57635 ай бұрын
Great points Josh. The safety factor of the diesel exhaust systems cannot be overstated. Also, the ease of getting fuel goes to diesel. The ability to use truck stop big rig lanes reduces so much stress knowing you don't have to find and navigate a station to get to the gas pump with a trailer in tow. I am convinced that a diesel as an everyday driver when NOT under load is detrimental to the motor. Diesels need to work, if not the filters have reduced life, and the regeneration cycles increase significantly. Thanks for all you do for the Herd!

Diesel engines are not only more expensive than gas engines but also weigh more so reduce available payload. The difference can be a few hundred pounds. I think a decent generalization as to which is better can be based on approximate miles driven. For folks who tow under 5K/year a gas will generally be more economical when you compare engines costs and fuel costs together. Between 5K and 10k miles per year it gets a little muddy but this is where diesel starts to be better than gas. Over 10K it is pretty much a diesel world. There are some caveats. If a person spends a lot of time driving at higher altitudes a diesel with its turbos will perform better than a naturally aspirated gas engine. In this situation I would ignore the cost differences and go diesel. If the gas engine has a turbo, though I am not aware of any in the 3/4 and 1 ton class at this time, then I would still go by the under 5K = gas, 5K - 10K either/or, over 10K diesel.
@timmcnulty15315 ай бұрын
I like the points you made about gas vs diesel. I've made the very same points numerous times. However, there is one point you may not have thought of. Refueling with the trailer. Yes a shorter trailer will never be an issue at a normal gas station. A big long trailer can be an problem at many stations. I know a few people that switched from diesel to gas, pulling a 38+' trailer. Some have said they have to find a lot, unhook the trailer, go refuel the truck, then go hook the trailer again. With a diesel, you can use the semi lanes at truck stops. Yes some truck stops have RV lanes with gas and diesel,but not all of them have RV lanes.

The new diesel trucks have new pistons that help with gas mileage and noise reduction. It’s hard to tell if a truck is diesel or gas today. The newer diesel, at least for the Chevy 6.2 engine, oil and fuel filter cost is around $110 at the dealership. My 2017 Titan 5.0 Cummings cost $500 every 5000 miles (the manual says you can go 10,000 miles between changes). In tow mode and depending on the weight, wind, and outside temperature the Chevy 6.2 averages about 12 miles to the gallon. The Cummings 5.0 should go 400,000 - 500,000 miles with maintenance. I’m not sure about the newer diesel motors. Repairing a diesel is at least twice as much than gas. You’ll need a diesel mechanic. That’s all I got 🤷♂️

In researching this subject I’ve spoken with a couple of people who manage large fleets of HD trucks. These are people whose trucks are working hard hauling loads every day and are the ideal use case for a diesel. What they have told me is that there is no economic argument for the diesel engine. They say it will cost more to buy upfront, own and operate, and won’t return better resale than a gas engine. They say the ONLY reason you buy diesel is because you need or just want that level of power. Buying a diesel will always be more expensive period. On the resale side having looked at used car valuation tools the average price difference between gas and diesel in used trucks is around $6000. Since the option cost $10,000 that means you take an extra $4000 hit when you sell your truck. As a matter of opinion I think the exhaust brakes are seriously overvalued. If you slow down and get in a low gear with the gas engine the occasional use of brakes to keep your speed under control isn’t going to cause you any issues even on a long steep downgrade. I do get the comfort factor of the effortless low rpm tug up the grade and the exhaust brake managing things for you on the way down. But that’s a convenience it’s not a must have for safety.

I live and tow in the Rockies. The exhaust brake works great on our roads that have 6-8% grades. You can just set the cruise and forget it. Likewise pulling those grades is easy with my Duramax. I went from a gas towing a 28’ bumper pull to a Duramax and it’s night and day difference. I’ve since upgraded to a 3500 dually to tow my fifth wheel. The stress level reduction and performance are 100% worth it to me but I realize those are subjective and a personal preference.

If you’re towing heavy and traveling you need a diesel. It provides the torque necessary to efficiently haul and more importantly an exhaust brake to safely slow down and stop. Gas is great for smaller RVs as it provides sufficient power, great payloads and cheaper long term operation in regards to maintenance. Either way both great purpose built options. Great video as always Josh!

Diesel used to be 100% more durable choice, but modern DEF system major repairs can come pretty darned close to flat replacing a gas engine. To me, it comes down to usage. If you tow heavy all the time, get Diesel... if you tow heavy occasionally... get whichever you want. Diesel resale often offsets higher initial cost...but I bet modern gas are less expensive for maintenance overall these days.

Great video. The longer range of my Duramax 2500 is offset by the higher price of diesel and cost of DEF compared to gasoline. I don't use my truck commercially or for a huge trailer, so if I had to do it again, I'd probably buy a gas truck. If you're driven by price, gas is a no-brainer.

I talked myself out of the diesel for all the points you mentioned. Bought a 22 Ford F250 CC 7.3 gasser since everyone talked about how great they were for towing. Towed my 23 WW 26RBSX twice with the gasser in the mountains of NH. Just came home with a 2019 F350 CC 6.7 diesel last week. My 7.3 averaged around 5-7 mpg in the 2 trips. Towed with the 6.7 for 5 days before I purchased it and was seeing almost 13 mpg in similar scenarios with the same camper. There's no comparison when it comes to towing. The diesel, for me, is the right tool for the job. The gasser can certainly do it, but the diesel just does it SO MUCH BETTER.

I had a 2017 F-150 with the 3.5L twin turbo v6, which was fine for towing a 8000 lb travel trailer. I was too close to the max payload and 2 years ago upgraded to a 2015 Ford F-350 with a 6.2 gas V8 because everyone saying to avoid diesel. Compared to the F-150, the F-350 was way more stable for towing that load on the highway, but the gas engine really didn’t perform as well as the twin turbo v6 in my previous F-150. We towed the camper out west through the mountains and when going up hills the engine would have to stay rung out near redline to get up the hill and the same would happen when driving into strong head winds. So, the gas mileage was around 5-6mpg. The ride was not very good as I expected with a F-350 coming from a F-150 but got better when towing. I towed our camper trailer with that for about a year and decided to try a 2024 GMC 2500 with a Duramax and the difference in that and the previous F-350 was night and day. The ride is much better and it tows MUCH BETTER. Also, getting fuel is not near as stressful as it was. Before buying the 2024 Duramax I also drove a 2024 2500 with the 6.6 gas before buying and decided to get the diesel. I agree it’s the best tool for the job. I know the gas engines can do it, but my personal preference is to have performance, comfort, and refueling convenience of the diesel. There are some “extra” things to put up with on the diesel when not towing with adding DEF, inconveniences with regens and added expense of maintenance and repairs, but I knew this going in and willing to play the diesel game. Besides towing, the GMC 2500 Duramax is a great driving and riding HD truck. It’s all about personal preference. Drive what suits you and stay within your towing and payload limits.

I have towed with both gas and diesel. I have towed big and small trailers with both. By far diesel was well worth the extra cost for towing either big or small trailer. The price of fuel is comparable right now and I get 2-3 more MPG with the diesel then I did with gas which makes up for the slightly higher price of diesel. You can't beat the torque and towing power going up a steep grade with a diesel. I towed the same trailer up a 8% grade with gas and diesel. With the gas I was constantly shifting gears even though I had an automatic and my average MPH was around 20-25. With the diesel I was easily pulling that same trailer at 55 MPH up the same grade. This was a 7200 lb toy hauler. I guess if you have a smaller trailer say around 4-5k lbs then a gas would be OK but anything bigger than that and spend the extra $$ and get a diesel. Even though the oil changes are way more than gas with a diesel I can also go twice as far between oil changes so that mostly evens out. I have friends with a gas F150 that is rated at towing 11k lbs. They struggle pulling their trailer up a steep incline and have had to stop several times because they get a warning they are over taxing the engine.

The newest gas engine equipped 1 ton trucks have towing capacities around 20,000 lbs now. Especially when they have lower gears in the differentials like 4.30s. That’s in the range of most 5th wheels even toy haulers. If you tow a 5th wheel maybe 6-8 times a year I’d almost go gas now. Almost all the advantages diesel had in the past are gone. The mpg advantage diesel has is mitigated in states like mine where diesel costs $1.50 more per gallon to fill up. The maintenance is crazy. You lose a fuel pump in some of these that’s a $15,000 repair nowadays which also negates any fuel savings. Cleaning a DPF costs thousands. You could delete that and risk your warranty or fines. Also until this video I had never thought of the insurance cost differences. The only advantages to Diesel are raw power and fueling up at truck stops where it’s easier to pull a trailer through.

If you don't end up with a big block gasser the torque curve of the diesel wins hands down and that matters here out west. A small block gasser running full tilt trying to get up some of the big grades out here is running up coolant and trans temps, while barely holding 45 MPH based on the folks I get stuck behind. Then once you are at the top you gotta head down usually. The exhaust brake option on the diesel and lower natural RPM make it safer and easier. The diesel truck lanes also make refueling faster (once at the pump) and easier with a trailer. But as noted, maintenance is more money. About twice as much for an oil change. My Cummins held 13qts. My current Duramax holds 10qts. DEF, fuel filters, emissions issues, etc also make it not great for a daily driver. Replacing that clogged DPF is expensive, found out the hard way.

I've got a Ford one ton gas. The fuel range on a short bed is pretty poor, meaning fill ups more often and in line at gas stations with cars. My truck has no problems pulling over mountains on cruise control with a 10,000 pound trailer (truck is rated for 20K pounds). My main reason for not considering diesel was the initial costs, unreliability and the fact ULSD fuel isn't reliably available in all of Mexico, where we're traveling. That last one is the deal breaker. If I were pulling full time in the US, had a fifth wheel, or was towing more than 10K pounds, diesel would be my choice.

Long, easy commutes with towing through hilly or mountainous country: diesel all the way. At 55 mph, not towing, I get 25 mpg with my 2500HD/6.6L Duramax/10-speed; at 75 mph, it drops to 19-21 mpg. Towing: 11 to 15 mpg with our trailer; the sweet spot is 63 to 65 mph for the best mileage. If you have short or have to drive thru heavy traffic during the commute and tow over flat country with a few hills, definitely gasoline. Resale value on the diesel still is excellent. I paid $63K for my 2022 2500HD. Value today is $54K, and we're very right-side-up on what we owe vs. what it's worth. The price of diesel is equal to or slightly above regular gasoline (generally between regular and mid-grade gasoline). DEF only adds a few pennies since I get 950 to 980 mpg commuting and 500 to 550 mpg towing. Maintenance costs are only slightly higher as I get longer service life on my motor oil (7500 - 8500 miles), so the cost is roughly the same. I towed with gasoline engines for years, and the diesels beat them all like rented mule. Diesels run cooler on the transmission, good for towing in hot weather. Even on long grades through the mountains, the transmission seldom gets to 190 degrees. The gassers used to get 200 to 220 degrees, and the engine temps would get up there (235 - 240). It's my first diesel, and it does what I want without complaint.

According to the factory book the first engine overhaul is recommended at 400K miles. I currently have 250K and it runs as good as new The only engine work so far is water pumps (2).. I never had a gasser make it over 200K without major work. The Cummins engine is a medium duty engine in a light duty application. But I must admit my brother had a Ford diesel and it was nothing but problems for him so like everything I don't think you can lump all years and makes together. Some are better than others.

Our last truck was a 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 gas (6.0). It pulled our Jayco Octane SL 293 great, plenty of power. My wife used it as a daily driver and got 12 mpg every day to go to work. It would get 15 mpg highway (not towing). When we were towing we got 5.5 to 6.5 mpg and we towed a lot of long distances (350-500 mile one-way trips). I hated the range while towing. It had a 36 gallon fuel tank but getting 6 mpg meant you had to stop and get gas every 200 miles. I think our next one will be a diesel mostly for the added range due to the better mpg while towing. I think the daily driving is basically a wash because the slightly better mpg is offset by the. higher price per gallon (plus DEF), but not having to stop every 200 miles while towing is what i'm looking for.

I know you focused on the HD segment but in the half ton market I believe the 3.0L Duramax diesel is a viable option. On the 2024 GMC Sierra SLT I just ordered the diesel is a $795 option. The 6.2L gas engine, which is the only other one I would consider for towing, is a $2295 option. And it uses premium gas. Where I live premium gas is 75 cents more than diesel. Last month it was $1.05 more than diesel. So diesel is much cheaper than any grade of gas for me. The Duramax also has significantly better fuel economy over any of the gas engines, whether empty or towing. The Duramax has a 7 quart crankcase capacity vs 8 quart for the 6.2L or the 5.3L. And the fuel filter has a 30,000 mile replacement interval, so not a major expenditure. So I fully expect my new diesel engine truck to be less expensive to run and maintain than the outgoing 6.2L in my previous truck, which I just sold for way more than I thought it would sell for.

As a 2004 1/2 ton Suburban owner, I have to get an RV that my ‘Burb can handle. Unfortunately its gas mileage is only 13.5mpg to begin with, and that’s WITHOUT pulling anything :( It’s been like that the 12 years I’ve owned it. I’ll get a lil Wildwood/Salem 171 for a year or 2, pay it off, then jump in to a 3/4 ton diesel. After another 2 years or so, sell/trade the WW171 and step in to a 28-30’ RV. If I get a 3/4 ton pickup first, I already know I want a diesel, there won’t be anything in the budget for an RV. I’d rather get a smaller camper first so I can get out and have some adventures. Besides, I can pull the WW171 for as long as I want with a 3/4 diesel, there’d be no reason to upgrade campers unless I want too. If you get a ‘too big’ rv first, you’re a screwed duck if your current tow vehicle can’t pull it (safely, smartly, legally). Better to have too much power than not enough. Most excellent video Nerd! Great video! Love the nuanced discussion. I’m a weekend camper. And for all the reasons you listed, it makes sense to go gas when I upgrade my current tow vehicle. But, when I upgrade, plan is to buy a truck that has every wizbang, gadget, button I want. I want it to be a truck I can drive maybe 20 years. So for me, the longevity of a diesel engine is the tipping point.

Only caution I would add is all those fancy add ons add weight and reduce your cargo capacity on the truck so make sure you still have enough for that rv

Local dealer has a 1 ton gas Ram tradesman flatbed. 7700 payload 18K towing. Two door real truck. Cummins and Allison eat up payload and tow.

Ram has a website you put the vin in for those stats

Well said and right-on! I've had both and do not miss the cost of diesel fuel and diesel maintenance for my use as an occasional hauler. My Ram 1500 with a V-8 works just fine and has for years.

Josh, I had a 6.4 gaser and have a Cummins now I wouldn't trade for anything.

I went 2021 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 to tow a 7500 (loaded) 34’ trailer. Mostly through the Rockies to BC. If you go diesel on a Ram 2500 you lose a lot of payload (I have 2800lbs, and similar equipped diesel was about 2100 from what I recall seeing on the sticker). The Hemi tows that no problem through mountains. I would recommend it prob up to 9-10k loaded. Beyond that I would definitely switch to diesel and possibly even 1 ton (depending how much towing is done). In a 4 hour one way round trip between Calgary and BC I’ll average around 22 l/100kms (I think 10-11mph). Unloaded, driving in a slow, lots of stops small town I average about 18-19 l/100kms (12-13 mpg), and recommended gas is 87. On highway I’ve seen a best of around 12-13 l/100kms (18-19mpg?). And I drive with a very light foot. 3/4 and above are heavy, and will use lots of gas even with all the advancements. But for towing anything about 6-7k dry, it becomes a noticeably better driving experience.

Well Done Josh! My only complaint with my 6.7L gas F-250 is the gas mileage towing, which is awful. Other than that, because its not in use all the time, gas was the way to go.
