I've heard multiple different GSD owners say that male GSDs often bond best with female owners and conversely, female GSDs bond best with male owners. Not sure how true this is specifically with GSDs but I know when we had our female Labrador Retriever, she listened and obeyed me very well as I was the primary person training her, but if she had a choice of loving up on my husband versus me, she would love up on my husband every time.

This is so true! My mom had a gsd back when she was younger and he was a male, he bonded very well with her and her brother but he loved her much more.

All 4 of my GSD's have been male. I get along with them better for some reason. I used to live out away from town when I had my first one, Dillon. There was a man walking up and down the road and Dillon was barking at him going further each way than the man. I called the police, they came out to check him out and called me back. The man had dementia, lived in the neighborhood but got confused about how to get back home. Dillon kept him herded back and forth because he knew there was a 4-lane highway not much farther from my house. The police said that he probably saved the man's life. I was so proud of that dog.

Sorry, but I'd have to disagree a little. I've been the proud owner and mama to a yellow Lab, (male) Chocolate Lab, (female) and a Chesapeake Bay Retriever (male). And am the current owner and mama to a Red nose Pitt (female) and a White German Shepherd (male). And all 3 of my boys were/are my "Velcro dogs." Lol. Glued to my side all the time! Sleep with me, and even lay outside the shower, waiting for me. All had varying degrees of separation anxiety. Very eager to please. But also very rough and tough (playful/hyper) at times too. My White German Shepherd is my big baby boy. If I'm out of his sight, he whines inconsolably. He's the most intelligent dog I've ever owned. My 2 females, (both my Lab, and my Pitt) were/are very independent. Although much calmer than my males, both prefer to sleep on their dog beds, away from the family action in the house. Like your male Shepherd, my female Pitt comes for her doses of love, but then retreats back to her favorite spots. (My Chocolate Lab was the exact same.) Maybe I'm just privvy to male dogs. But that's been my experience.

Hi! Love your videos, thanks so much! We have a long coat male GSD who is aging and losing quality of life, so his time is limited. We just got a 10 week long coat male puppy who seems to have really low energy for this breed. I have two questions: 1) Any tips on raising this puppy to respect or even protect my chickens? It’s important to me that they can coexist. 2) What can we do to help the puppy develop protective/guard dog attributes? It came very naturally to our old boy, but this new guy is the most mellow dog I’ve ever seen. He’s a high quality dog so hopefully he’ll come around with training.

I introduce them to chickens and watch VERY closely for an alert in the puppy. Then I correct with an assertive verbal noise and REWARD for being calm around the chickens. It will take some time, but it works. I have had free-range chickens for years. GSM

I've had male and female gsds and its a hard decision but personally I find females easier to train but im biase because ive loved them all whatever sex you get you wi never get a more loyal protective intelligent dog

My female I got her for my personal protection but when she was a pup she chose to be with the male German Shepherds outside protecting the property/she hated coyotes and is the first to hunt them down..but now she laying next to me sleeping and the boys/males are outside..she has had two litters and has lost all but two who found good homes/both males...now she seems very clingy...any suggestions why

Help hoping you'll get this message!! I have 24 hrs. I have a male GSD. He is almost two. Also have three small dogs, one male and two females. I have an opportunity to get another GSD from my males mother and they are ready this week. I'm meeting them tomorrow and she will only have 1 male and 3 females left. I'll have to make a decision almost right away who and which I want. Although I have a couple small female dogs all my other pets, cats, birds past and present have been male so I always lean that way. However the main reason for considering a fifth dog is an actual playmate for our male Shepard. My small dogs ignore, and don't really like him and definitely don't play with him. Can you help me decide. I want what's best for him but worry about our bond as well as the other girls in the house. Or maybe I shouldn't do it at all lol I'm not going into it without thinking it completely through.

I have 2 females, littermate sisters. Have never had a male dog, but would love to get a particular one from the shelter I have visited a couple of times, he's a cream color back/saddle GSD and white face, gorgeous good boy. From what I can tell, my velcro female protects me and my not so velcro female protects the property, taken on more the male role in some ways. Love my girls and I hope, hope, hope, I can get that cream male and hope my girls will accept him! ❤❤

I have a one year old female shitzu and 2 year old small mix breed dog that is 14% German shepherd in the house. They are inseparable and the male is very active and loves to play. I have been dying to get a male German shepherd puppy but I want them to get along. The mixed breed is not trained and very active and hyper ( they are both the family dog) the gsd would be trained and only mine. Are there any suggestions to what I can do?

If it were me I would definitely get a female. Opposite sex carries much less risk of issues developing in my opinion. GSM

Dear friends, I LOVE your channel (just subscribed to it as well as your e-letters) and I'm planning to get a German Shepherd. However, I live in the UK where it's quite hard to source proper working line German Shepherds like you have! I was born in the Czech Republic where there are plenty of amazing breeders of working lines, (such as 'Aritar Bastet', 'Jinopo', etc.) and I'm quite disappointed I can't find any in the UK! Have you got any direct connections with UK breeders that you could recommend to me? Also, I can't seem to find any proper training courses, where I could train my dog under supervision, (and attend once a week or so) instead of having to give my puppy away for expensive training for three or more weeks and lose my bond with him! So if you know of any breeders AND training places in the UK, please let me know...Thanks a million! Lu

I bought a male GSD around a month ago, he was 12 months old, massive, poorly trained and very boisterous. I took him home, he was fine at first, then after a while he would jump up and try to hump me. He then started to try and chew everything in the house, massive rug inclued. Every time I went to stop him he bit me. I tried to sleep on the sofa to keep him company over night, but he just kept jumping up to hump me. Ended up sleep on kitchen work top. In the moring he decided to start chewing a bath pannel out back at 6am, went to take pannel off him, he bit me again putting a deep hole below my peck with a 4 inch long gash. Will make for a nice scar. Lucky for me the previous owner came and picked him up and said its off to the vet to get his balls cut off. Hope that sorted him out would be a shame to see a beautiful animal like that get put to sleep. I think this dog was behaving like this with his wife and daugther while at work, the reason he sold it so cheep (£350) Anyways get my bitch puppy in 4 weeks, cant wait :)

My female is very loving right now she's laying in the house next to me I first got her as a personal protection but when she was a puppy she decided she wanted to run outside with the boys and protect the property she hates coyote and some very good coyote Hunter but now after a loss of two litters she's now laying next to me inside she acts like she doesn't want to be outside anymore and scared about outside only two of the pups of her litter lived both given to good homes both males both look like Mama can you give me an idea why she has changed her mind has become so clingy

If you don't plan on staying single forveer, make sure male or female that you socialize them with humans. You do not want them to resource guard you as "theirs". I am a female, my male GSD, did not like new people. He basically shunned them. My female GSD likes all people, but not dogs. Male vs female IMO, female is half the size but twice the attitude.

So basically it would make no big difference. Apart from females being more loving, which is good rather, they can be equally protective and aggressive when needed. I guess only an additional thing would be the care which needs to be taken twice a year when they are in heat. Is it a very difficult task to carry out? Please comment.
