Hands down a female german shepard. I am not an expert but i have 19 yrs of hands on experience with both male and female of 7 different breeds - saint bernard, dalmatian, retriever, husky, malmute, pomerians and bulldogs. If u want a four legged pet go for a gsd or retreiver. If u want a four legged family member female german shepard are the best choice. Currently we have 2 and i don't even consider them dogs/animals/pets. They are my sisters.

Hey there! I think it is great that you are taking the time to dive into this subject. It is something a lot of people are curious about when picking out their first, or next pooch. My grandmother has been a breeder for the last 10 years and I have recently began helping out, so I have seen quite a few puppies in my lifetime. I would have to say that the overall standard for male vs female characteristics in dogs is that the males are more affectionate, playful, and carefree. In contrast, the females are easier to train, more dominant, and much more relaxed. When I tell people this it tends to surprise them, and I am by no means an expert, but I believe that as humans we tend to have a stereotype that all males in nature should have very similar characteristics to a human male. I am currently looking into getting a german shepherd and was curious what people who own them have to say. Thanks for video! Edit: I also felt like I wanted to say something about how you talked about a male having a very close bond with one person in the family, in particular the “alpha.” I believe this to be true. I currently have 2 female dogs and 1 male and I have noticed a difference in bonds between the genders. My male is very close with me because I am the one who trains all of them and he sleep with me at night and doesn’t leave my side to much. Where as the females tend to spend time with everyone in the house equally.

Hey thank you so much for your great comment. I am by no means an expert either. I was going off my experience bringing up my first gsd pup. My male long haired see very easy going. He's been with 2 families before us and before we bought him from his previous owner we met him at the park to see how things went and he took to us right away. I've heard long haireds are family dogs anyways so that might explain it. He loves people in general though and pretty much fell in love with my dad's girlfriend the second he met her lol. He's also very affectionate, needs morning belly rubs before waking up and throughout the day will ask for pets and affection. He's my first purebred GSD

I think Shepherds in general will bond differently with all family members, so they'll have a close bond with all, but different. I think the ladies challenge commands more than the males do, in my experience--the ladies exercise their independent judgement. Girls are very active, very vigilant!! Our one male became a lovable couch potato who always did as he was told. However, as a puppy--around 9 months old, Xavier was a terror on 4 paws (ooh, he was nuts! He dug up the yard like a gopher)! But he calmed down around 2 years old. Our ladies were mature by 1.5 years and consistent in their personalities.

Actually females are overall more dominant and territorial, the difference is that females (if socialized, obviously) will only pick a fight if they really have to. Males tend to showcase their strength more, which is why you typically see two males fighting. But they are usually pretty harmless. Females, eventhough they fight less (if you’re lucky your female will never end up in a fight) tend to fight more serious.

I've found the exact opposite to be true. The males I've had have been more eager to please than the females. The females have all had a rebel streak. The only one I have that is somewhat aggressive with other dogs is a female. The males all get along with everyone. I have American and West German Showlines. The males are more intimidating. I used to read translations of German books about the breed that said that the males tend be easier to handle and get along better with other dogs. If you think about it, in a wolf pack, only one female gets to breed (in most cases). If another female has puppies, the more dominant female kill those of the less dominant female. They have this whole thing called social suppression of estrus, so a female would be required to be much more plucky to survive and pass on her genes.
@Lucythegermanshepherd4 жыл бұрын
Hey that sounds really factual and you have a very valid point. I'll have to look into this further and do an update video. This is more based on my personal experience and only owning a female and being involed with friends with male GSDs. Thanks for your great comment

My previous GSD was a rescue from WSGR and extremely alpha. A yr after I rescued her she was attacked by 2 Chi’s - 1 bit her in the muzzle and I was surprised she didn’t hurt it) She became even more aggressive after the attack/ esp towards little dogs. I have an unusual lifestyle-I live, travel and work out of an RV and since I didn’t have a backyard I was always extremely wary about every situation and the possibility of a dog popping out of nowhere, Knowing she was a liability my only recourse was to hire a behaviorist- and I spent a fortune-5K!! But at least she was “ workable “ for the next 10 yrs until she died at the age of 12. Now I have a 100 lb sweetheart that is fear aggressive and was just diagnosed with lymphoma 😢

I just lost two female GSDs this year within 2-1/2 months of each other, Czarina and Olympia. They were both 12 yrs, 3 months. Czarina was alpha and watched the inside; Olympia the diva watched the outside where she liked to lay on the deck. I now have a 1-1/2 yr old GSD male, Nabucco, and a 5 yr old GSD female, Ophelia. The boy erupts when necessary, but is also needier. Ophelia's only been with me two weeks, but she's already alert, gives warning barks, and I can tell she's another Olympia. I've owned dogs for over 30 yrs, and have found the females have a more independent, yet loving nature, which I think is one reason I have found them to be more protective. But with GSDs, they're a breed unto themselves. Training them properly, along with showing them love and affection, is the key to their loyalty and loving you back.

I had both male and female German shepherd. My female was more possessive with other dogs being around me. And females ARE more stubborn. My female gsd was way more stubborn then my male. Lots of people just assume that males are more stubborn because of being more powerful or testosterone. But that's just simply not true. Yes males tend to be more aggressive more protective of female owners but female German shepherds or anything female in general, and people will say I'm sexist but by that logic you can say you're sexist for saying men or males are more aggressive; but females of any species in general are more likely to be stubborn. Sorry. That's a fact. Its literally hard wired in the brain of females. Females are just more hard headed, that's just a fact. Just like males are hard wired to be more dominant and aggressive. My aunt even told me that "boys are more stubborn" I said no females are. She was like "you'll see." And when I got my male gsd I saw that she was wrong. It's ignoring biological facts just like if you were to ignore that females are more nurturing. And I wouldn't say anything about the males if you never even owned a male.
@RoughRiderElk4 жыл бұрын
@Darth Traya Yeah there's always exceptions. Never said that. Have you ever had more then one female? I think your ignorant if you ignore biological facts. I've known many people who owned several gsds and say the same thing. Dont fucking assume I'm wrong based on your one dog. Your probably biased because you have a female gsd. Like my aunt that said males always fight, but females too. Infact when I was with her one of them was picking on the other but she refused to acknowledge it. So I could also use your words against you. Stop denying biological facts. I never said all females, but females more less tend to have certain issues males have certain issues. What if someone came up to you and said "I have a male German shepherd amd he is not aggressive at all." Would you automatically change your opinion on one dog? Of course you wouldn't. Because you would still probably believe based on a majority of german shepherd males you'd say that dog was an exception and still hold your belief that males are usually more stubborn. It does also depend on how the dog is raised. Maybe yours friend didn't raise their dog right? Sounds like it If he didn't want to listen and get into everything. Sounds like your ignorant and stupid af if you think I said all females. And yeah you may say it's more the individual but you know genetics can play a role as you say. You know males are more aggressive and protective in general. Because of biology testosterone etc. Youd probably agree females tend to be more nurturing and gentle particular with children. Of course there's exceptions but that doesn't overrun the rule. And females are usually more stubborn because its nature and biology. I never said all females had to be like this. Or all males had to be like that. But you need to generalize based on facts. We all can agree german shepherds are very protective of their owners and are loyal. If we are going to generalize the good things based on facts because german shepherds were bred for these traits, to be alert protective and loyal in order to sheep heard which is what their original purpose was and then later for other things such as police work, guarding etc. You must also take in consideration the cons too based on biological facts. And this not only goes for the breed itself but also certain lineagepersonality. Males tend to be better for certain things because of slight more aggression. Females tend to be more docile with kids because of their female instinct. We can't only generalize the good things. If we are to do that we have to generalize the bad things too. The pros with males is they might be more intimidating and aggressive so could be a better guard dog. Or they tend to bond with one person if you want a companion for yourself not your family. The pros of females is they're more docile. Especially with kids or even smaller animals. Except for my female 🤣 but generally females are more docile and nurturing with kids or puppies or smaller animals. But there's also cons to both. And again you can't only generalize the pros. Males tend to be overly protective and and females tend to be more stubborn. They're is always exceptions though, but it doesn't over right the rule. Stop spreading dangerous information based on your feelings. And stop projecting your ignorance onto others. You refuse to ignore biological facts. Based on your one female. Your the one who thinks one exception over rights a rule. And that's not how life works. You should pick which breed, gender, or linniage based on general biological facts. Youd seem like a person who would say "its doesn't matter get whatever you like" a dangerous mindset. Yes people can choose and should choose based on their needs or situation. And need to know the facts. I'm getting a second dog soon, it's going to be female because I have a male. And the same sex tends to fight more male or female. No garentee the same sex will fight but it's more likely so. Am I ignorant because I feel it might be better to get a female in my situation? No. But youd be ignorant for saying its foolish to judge it even if its based on facts. Do some research. Before you ruin lives with "genetics don't matter as much as the individual" They're animals first. Then dog. Then breed. Then individual or personallity. You obviously are one of those that view its mostly personality that rules the dog first. Well I got news. The individual in dogs is not greater than that of humans. Dogs live by genetics and instinct not humans. Look in the mirror l. Your the ignorant one. Because you ignore science and nature and put your feelings over facts. And got offended reading my comment pointing out information that this guy said based on his own feelings and not facts.

German Shepherds are not for inexperienced dog owners, have you considered getting another breed to start? Prove yourself with an easy breed-meaning that you can HOUSE TRAIN the dog. This is no small task. You will need to prove you will regularly feed the dog, groom the dog, keep up with vaccinations, spend a lot of time playing and getting the dog socialized? THEN, ask for a big dog, known for being naturally protective, that can literally kill a person. THINK ABOUT THIS. Also, is there a room in your parents home where you can separate the dog? I use my kitchen because there is a dog door to outside.

Iv had 4 GSD, 3 females 1 male, I prefer females in my opinion they are better watchdogs, my first one female Bo was an absolute brilliant dog who watched over my son when he was small, if he ever left from the yard we lived on a farm at time she would nudge him back inside the gate she never left his side, never needed to walk her on a lead just one click of my fingers she would be back walking on my left side,the male was extremely docile not at all more aggressive at all. Our third dog female Belgian shepherd x German shepherd was more of a very anxious high strung dog who only had eyes for my daughter classified Velcro dog who no matter what anyone else told her to do only my daughter could control her when younger.

Yes, my female GSD has eye secretion issues too. She also loves my fingers in her mouth and gently chewing on them. I find her more joined at my hip with me than the Male German shepherd I owned back in 1991 that I raised from a puppy, probably because he was a more relaxed dog, but I have only owned Rosie for 3 weeks. Rosie is my current dog will need some obedience training and has a bad habit of barking at everyone in the street both in and outside the house. She is a rescued German shepherd, so when the COVID 19 restrictions are relaxed, I will take her to dog obedience training once they start operating again and she will benefit from being around other dogs and people and I think this will help her with some of her anxiety. She is my beautiful girl that's for sure.

Then he'd dance around. I read stories about trainers who had to leave their dogs behind in Vietnam. Many of them had to literally be knocked out by other marines. After the Flicky, I understand why. Definetley a Female GSD in my opinion especially maybe for a family with kids as well , Mine was just like Lucy in many ways. Lucy is Amazing in every way and I miss you Cinnamon I will always miss you rest in peace my sweethearted Lady🥺😭Cinnamon was my first female dog and first GSD. I grew up with a male American Akita Oh boy(: He was on another level talk about a guard dog yeah well he is a whole different conversatıon but EfE Rest in peace as well my boy I feel youre presentce still to this day after all these years that youve been gone and will till the end of time hoping well meet one day you were my families fearless guardian angel you were always on the look out ready to take on the whole military for us at all cost with not a drop of fear😭Back to female GSDs and my experience, just like Lucy Cinnoman was such a mannered Lady and I mean a Ladyyy in every way very affectıonate sipirituel so connected bonded collected and unbelievebly smart so smart to the point I always used to forget she was a Dog She was quite and never barked excesively at all or for no reason and when she did just lıke Lucy very measured balanced depending on what it was Man it was like she talked to me in every way with her eyes and gestures however couple of occasions when I did get into a heated conversatıon with some people is when not only I but everyone around me saw her agressive side especially at one situation I was definitley glad she was on a long leash tied up which gave me a chance to run and get my hands on the leash which was about to either break or the small tree was coming along from its root to come to my rescue . But she was right and felt everything knowing those people were up to no good maybe had weapons and pretty sure did This was overseas and pretty sure in that moment because of Cinnamon they tought twice to take action. Sorry for this long comment hopefully it helps and whoever reads it thank you also for listening me spilling my heart out as well(: in memory of my dogs. God bless all.

Help hoping you'll get this message!! I have 24 hrs. I have a male GSD. He is almost two. Also have three small dogs, one male and two females. I have an opportunity to get another GSD from my males mother and they are ready this week. I'm meeting them tomorrow and she will only have 1 male and 3 females left. I'll have to make a decision almost right away who and which I want. Although I have a couple small female dogs all my other pets, cats, birds past and present have been male so I always lean that way. However the main reason for considering a fifth dog is an actual playmate for our male Shepard. My small dogs ignore, and don't really like him and definitely don't play with him. Can you help me decide. I want what's best for him but worry about our bond as well as the other girls in the house. Or maybe I shouldn't do it at all lol I'm not going into it without thinking it completely through.

Agree the only thing is that all are different so females can sometimes have a really high drive and large size and males can be sometimes smaller and low drive for example Harley has a very high drive and as you already know very fast haha 😂

Lucy looks great and she is very well trained. I have two German Shepherds, male and female. And I have to totally disagree with your video regarding point 1. All the characteristics you described about males are the exact traites of my female. My male is a 35kg lap dog. Very chilled and just loves to watch the world go by. My female is a 30kg crazy bitch and over protective and wants to kill anything threatening. Both dogs are very obedient but some days the female will back chat or be stubborn and pretend not to hear a command.
@Lucythegermanshepherd4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks shes a switched on young lady. Thats a fair point. I think breeding and prey drive can also be a massive part to play. Everything I described with the females I was going off my experience with Lucy. But thats not everyones case thats for sure. Thanks for the information too

Also males tend to have more skin around their neck. This tends to get larger when they are older and develop a mane similar to a male wolf.

First of all Miss Lucy (Lucie here in France) is a clever and nice dog Lucy means light in Latin Language. . For me the question will be different I would like to get a female firstly and a male. Should they come the same breeder or should I choice 2 different breeders. Maybe one in France and one in the West Germany.

I'm a tiny single woman😂 just looking for a furbaby to feel safe with. I had my eyes set on male GSDs(but I think females are awesome too), do you think they bond well with women??? Like will he see me as alpha? I don't know if that's a weird question. 😅 And I hope it makes sense. Would it be better for me to get a female?
