Should I Go To Film School? by Ross Brown

I have to admit, I did go to university in my late 20s. Not so much film school, but digital media where I learnt more aspects about filming than just film and edit. I learnt the VFX side of it, the 3D part of it and sound. I always wanted to be a film director growing up, but never had an avenue to start with nor the people to show me what can be done, And since this was before youtube peaked and there were "How to" videos showing me how to do what I could without University, I believe the experience and finding out more about myself was worth the time I chose to go. If anything it was a confidence booster and a way to show to myself that I could indeed throw my hat in the ring. I only wish I had the courage to follow what I loved perhaps 10 years earlier. But life has been one of my best teachers.

I don't know what to do anymore. I want to go film school for Screen writing. I love writing, from poetry to films. And i love movies so why not write for movies. But the more i look into films the more i don't see a reason to go. What should i do? Get a degree in writing to help my writing, or what? I feel so f-ing lost now!

The Abstract Lover I'm with you bud, just keep on writing and never give up. Read a lot, watch a lot, and be open to new things. This whole film school thing is full of so many opinions on whether to do or not do it. I recommend just getting on out there and shooting something or doing something with film. I review movies frequently and have made some connections there. Also, be open to various different mediums. Whether it be a graphic novel, or samurai flick, you never know what could spake the change or if you could be the one that brings that change.

Go with the flow -- don't put so much weight on planning out the rest of your life. You can't. I have learned this the hard way. Just enjoy life and do what you love somehow, someway. Not right away.

I have no idea why I watch these videos... I'm starting film school tomorrow and already know that's what I'm gonna do. I'm doing a 4 years program with a teaching degree on film. I already know deep down that's what I'm wanna do but I'm just afraid that in the end it wouldn't really be worth it. It's my true passion to write my own stuff and direct them, maybe even act in my movies but most people I know always tell me the same thing when I talk to them about that stuff: There is no money in it and it's not worth it. I mean that's really what I wanna do in theory but in reality there are so many reasons why not to. The movie/tv buisness in the country I live in are almost non existent. I can always try to make it in a different new place as scary as it sounds to move but it's only as a thought now and seems so far away and not really possible. I don't know I just have all those fears before the school year and 4 years is sure a long time. I'm sure I will gain allot from film school but I just worry that I might just not really be able to do anything with my degree once I get it... I mean I could teach film but that's more of a thing I wanted to do on my later years when I'm an experienced veteran in film making

@@avedismomjian nice of you to ask. I actually since than changed a college from one that teaches film making and teaching to a college that teaches film making and acting (The college is called Sapir and it's in the south in israel). Acting is something i connect with a lot more and it's something i was always interested in. I'm really happy with the choice i made. Now I'm on my semester break and soon I'll be on my fourth and final year. I made a few short movies, a web series, acted in many student films and even acted in a few very minor roles on TV and even in Avi Nesher's newest film. I got to edit and film a bunch of projects. I even wrote a story for a video game I'm developing with two programmers from my college. (There's a course on video game development. It combines animators and programmers to make a game throughout the year. Turns out i can join as a writer!). I also started working recently at a movie theatre which is a minimum wage job but it's still lots of fun and i like everyone there. So yeah life's pretty sweet. I hope i could somehow in the future make a living out of all of this. I upload everything i do to my KZbin channel. I have been uploading since i was a kid in 2011 and i wanna keep uploading and show off my stuff. I'm actually acting in a student film tomorrow so it's nice for experience. My parents also saw me in a TV show recently which was a very cool experience. I had like one line but it was still pretty sweet.

It's hard to get your name out there. Maybe you'll get recognised on KZbin, if you're lucky enough but to get into the big jobs you need to know certain people and have the skills that it requires. I can maybe learn all the skills without going to university but I can't get my shit out there, if I don't know certain people that can get me those big opportunities. I'll probably go university for the "learning" and meeting new people. Makes sense?

I applied for film school years ago but it fell through because not enough people enrolled for them to justify a class.....I'm glad now.

Film Courage Because i genuinly think all you need is a good camera and a few good books on editing and shooting scenes to make a good start out movie.

I find it awkward that I am reaching out to someone I don’t know to ask this question. But we don’t know anyone in the film industry. May daughter was accepted to both NYU Tisch and Emerson College Film. NYU Tisch is going to be $ 80,000 (out of our pockets) more than Emerson. Are the contacts and location of NYC worth 80k more ? She would be taking out about 80k in loans
