We gotta do this young people in the military, your first NCO starts with showing you all the basics, how to wear the gear all the way up to how to pay bills. It's rough, but we're here because very people can or want to do it.

Hire this kid, but give him a probation period. Let him develop his responsibilities and accountability.

Hire the kid for a three month trial.. Extend that to 6 months. Keep him with the same crew for an extended period of time so he can form attachments and loyalty to his teammates. Talk to the team and inform them that this is a mentorship situation. Hold the man on his team accountable and talk to them every week. You’re very good friend of mine who is a successful electrician now, was hired decades ago by Christian electrical contractor. At the time, this “kid” was addicted to heroin, had raised himself and his birth family was a mess he secretly completed a methadone treatment program, gained his appropriate certifications and licenses, raised a wonderful family

I had a teacher in high school that made every student shake her hand as they entered the classroom. She taught us how to dress. Rules of etiquette. How to interview. Very few people get taught this stuff today.

An absent father is less disruptive to a child's life than an abusive or addicted one who won't leave.
