What a wonderful and in depth answer. Everybody I've seen on social media says that you should make a career out of it, which is dangerously oversimplified and misleading. It doesn't take into account that making art for a living has the added pressure of having to put food on the plate, which is tremendous. Ultimately, it is a personal choice about if you are willing to do lots of art, much of which aren't personal art and are willing to work through art blocks and frustrations and the ability to do art even when you don't feel like it. And there is no shame in the answer being no. For me it is. Art is my stress relief and if there is any pressure being added to it, it would lose its magic.
@unicorntamer220711 ай бұрын
Same! The misconception of "Artists are so lucky. They just play all day." Is very misleading. A lot of being an artist, even musically, is giving the people what they want more so than creating what you, the artist, want.

I'm currently in school to get into physical therapy. I'm in my first semester. It's a good field. People need it. I'll learn all kinds of cool stuff about the human body. It will help me be financially stable. But I promised myself 1 fun class every semester. This semester, I'm taking a World Music Appreciation class. I love it! I'm learning so much about various cultures around their world and the different music they play. My favorite part is learning about instruments I've never heard of. It's so cool! Next semester, I'm planning on taking a cooking class because I can always improve on making yummier food. I like to draw, and I took a lot of art and music classes in high school. But I have no drive to do it professionally. Art and music enrich my life. But I get a lot of joy in helping others. I think Scott gets joy from showing us the ropes of art and helping us in our art journeys. It's amazing. Love this channel! ❤❤

i always give people the same story when they can’t decide what to do: my dad graduated highschool went to the army came back and went to community college. All he wanted to do was be an actor so he did it. He moved to new york and went to school there and graduated with a bfa. Then he moved with my mom to LA to pursue more work. One day he decided he didn’t want to do acting anymore. It wasn’t his passion. He decided to go back to school for nursing. Got a bachelors of nursing and is still an RN to this day. People push this narrative in high school and college where you have to choose right now and you’re stuck with it for life. But that’s so untrue, you can have one job or 50. My dad always told me “You don’t choose a career, a career chooses you” and i stick by that

i'm honestly leaning into pursuing art as a career after i finish uni. i graduate this spring with a degree totally unrelated to art but i've been drawn to art (hey a pun!) since i was a kid. though it wasn't until a few years ago that i started to try to get serious and not until like last year that i was putting in consistent effort to improve and explore. there's not really much else that interests me, so art is kinda my main thing to really go for. but i've been a little hesitant the last few days, really thinking "can i really do it?" and with the semester going by so quickly i'm excited to be done finally (been in it for more than 4 years..) but that also means real world stuff is coming up. i'm kinda raring to go but i'm also nervous. but this video reminded me that art is still something that worth giving a shot. so, ready or not, i just gotta try my best at it and see how things go. thanks scott :)

I’m kinda stuck right now. My whole life, I’ve wanted to be a musician. My dad’s a musician, and it’s been my dream for as long as I can remember. But now that I’m in 11th grade, there’s all this pressure of “what do you want to do for a career?” And “where do you want to go to college?” And everyone (including my dad) is telling me I can’t be a musician because it’s not realistic. So idk what to do. I don’t even know what else I’d want to be. All I do know is that I have to figure it out fast, because I’m gonna have to start applying to colleges soon. I wish someone would’ve told me earlier to find something else to love, because music’s not gonna cut it. So idk. Thinking about college is scary. Like, I can’t figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life right now. I don’t even know what I’m doing tomorrow, never mind the rest of my life. My passion is music
@GuestingGameplays3 ай бұрын
Im late, but yeah this is just not possible to do right after unless we have this perimeter of how much we love stuff in comparison to others, its how we feel but most importantly *our intentioning towards the passion, because love is more than a feeling alone. Its energy, its the the very root of it.* We do feel pressured but whatever, this is the average cultural pursue but your life you do what you want with it, and in order to be a true passionate and fulfilled person in a daily basis you will disappoint closer ones, friends family or what not, because you have to. Its from your soul to the world, and when you increase in applied knowledge, that is wisdom, the 'world', as in the clients and people who you might show your work and etc will also repay you, so in this I would say dont worry and keep testing, but its a inner conviction that we are probably just going to get back to our art. If music is your art never stop making art, thats what I'd say even tho Im late to the party here, bc doesnt matter how many years would pass this is where you share and express, thats my take haha. God bless.

I think that's such a good advice all in all. I ended up picking art as work after i realised i simply couldn't think of myself being happy if i did anything but art, and i'm still a long way away from sucess, but i don't regret it, because it just, really makes me so so happy to do art all the time everyday. I hope that through perseverance & luck, things work out with me for art, but even then, i'm having fun painting & going out & learning & working on small indie projects, and that already means so so much to me.

I love this solution. I have had a love and talent for art all my life but would never do it as a job bc from the beginning I was afraid that having the pressure of creating to survive would take away my passion. I love art and it makes me happy even tho it is frustrating sometimes, it makes me forget about time until I look up and realise I’m sitting in a position I didn’t think was possible, my back hurts like crazy, I can no longer move or feel my body and I haven’t had water in hours. But still I would not want to depend on that financially. Art blocks happen, I don’t like having to carry out prompts which many artists need to do and even tho I’m just 19, I don’t know how long my body will let me do art at the scale I do now as my chronic pain and joint problems make me feel like I’m older than Scott (not that 55 is old but in relation to being 19 it is). I really hope I can do art for my whole life tho, I can’t imagine life without art

A few years ago i had some commissions from friends who wanted pencil-portraits. Just started because they watched me drawing in school (from Vocational training. I was around 20). I chose Lunch invitations instead of money. So we spent even more time together and I had some pretty good Pizzas! This offer was of cause just for these good friends, but I ever wondered, if I should try to make money out of my art. I ever felt it wouldn't be save enough. To this day It never became a career, but my family appreciates my skills in dally life. Almost every broken piece finds its way to me to get fixed. Just today I got two very old small pictures, my grandmother in law bought decades ago with her (long dead) husband. Just some souvenirs from a vacation. The colors are broken in some parts and one fell on the flor and is going to break in two pieces. I will save these memories for her. ❤ I feel appreciated in my art. Even if I do a technical job for living.

I was once at a convention many years ago and someone asked the person on stage for some advice on starting an acting career. His words to them have always stuck with me. He said that the only time you should become an actor is when you can’t not be an actor. I get the feeling that being an artist is kind of like that. It’s a deeply romanticised vision of what you could do. But it stops being something you do for the sheer pleasure of it and it becomes a job. Your not necessarily making something you want to anymore. It’s now something you have to do, it’s what your client wants. Unless you have the safety net underneath you you’re going to be making commissions for people. Would I love to stop working and pursue art and my many other hobbies full time? Yeah absolutely, but I also like having food on the table and a roof over my head. I can not be an artist. But if you can’t not be one, grab that thing by it’s short and curlys and go for it.

Professional senior designer weighing in, about 14 years in industry. Being creative for a living is tough. You gotta have such discipline to be able to pull ideas out of your brain, day in, day out, and mostly for things you aren't really interested in. A lot of days, I'll get home, and just struggle to make me draw for myself, but then feel all antsy if I haven't had that outlet. I'm not saying don't pursue a creative field, I'm just saying somedays it's tough to keep the creativity up, and have some left for yourself. I routinely try to go explore new places, street art, art galleries, listen to new (not my usual genre) music, read all sorts of stuff, and just stay curious and seek inspiration to keep my creative bank topped up. Also remember, you DON'T have to make your hobbies your career, nor your side hustle.

It’s apart of my everyday life! From comics to going to school and learning what it takes. Also, you have to accept that… you might not make it. Art career comes with joys and cons. Always weight them out before deciding! Art can be just for you or the world! I too didn’t have anything else I enjoyed or was good at, unlike art! Oh and I love the art you do! I love doing art, but I feel like doing it as a job would just kill the fun of it for me. That’s why I decided to keep it as a hobby and instead pursue aviation, since it’s something I also really love

This is great! I do necessarily want to do art as my job. I plan on becoming a band director because I love music, and between drill design(shapes made by a marching band) and musical expression I will get to show off my talents and love of art!

Thanks so much for this!! My DREAM JOB would be to be an illustrator for picture books or graphic novels. I’m obsessed with art and with writing and I hope one day I get to write and illustrate my own books. I’m still in high school but my parents and teachers are helping me find the most practical ways to pursue the things I love while still being on track to actually make money… because I kinda need money. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but I’m just hoping that I can make this happen because I can’t imagine what else I’d do. There’s nothing else I’m as passionate about as I am with art and writing. 😁

I’m 26, and I still don’t know what I want to be doing as a career. I’ve always loved art, and creative writing, but over time, I’m realising that perhaps I’d prefer them to remain constant passions rather than a chore that I need to fulfil to get any earnings. Art is a wonderful thing, and I want to treat it as so, not as something that is just for money and is anxiety-inducing ( in fact art is, for me, very much the opposite).

I did art in a professional field, 3D environment artist in film and tv. After a few years of getting beat to death, i realized that I hated the industry, but loved what i did. I stepped away from the professional world and truly struggled to figure out who i was as a result. Years later, i took my hobby back for myself and couldn't be happier.

I'm pursuing art in a different way. I'm studying to be a graphic design and although i like it enough to be a career, it's not my true passion. I like to make art for me and for others and that's partially why I chose graphic design. In my head there's a process like art and you can have a little creative freedom depending on the projects/clients. So although it's not exactly art, I like to think of it as another medium of art. And then I'm left with other mediums of art to explore and create for me while I leave photoshop and illustrator for graphic design. Graphic design may have it's ups and downs but I think it's the best combination of passion and stability for me personally compared to other careers.

You made me think about my past since I loved computer gaming and art and I would always pursue art actively trying to improve myself. I been doing art since kindergarten but from kindergarten and my elementary school years it was mostly doing art on and off and I would game so much it became a addiction. Starting my middle school years I wanted to take art more seriously since it was the only thing I loved, had a passion for, had an interest for and I saw myself becoming a peofessional artist career but at the same time my parent refused to let me become a professional artist as a career and computer gaming had become a crippling addiction and it lasted until my college years. At the very beginning of 2023 I started computer gaming less; gamed on and off slowly wanting to quit for career sake. It was the very beginning of 2024 I had quit computer gaming completely for the sake of my art career and the only gaming I do is on my phone. I do still check up on computer games but only for inspiration and ideas and just watch on youtube.

Thanks for the video scott! I was (and still) thinking about this and I think this is the best advice I've ever heard. Maybe art and gaming is just a passion for me and it is ok! 😊
