Cool, glad I found your channel and love for avocado as well. We have a small avocado orchard down here in south Texas along the gulf coast. Our heat can be intense as well. We have started using Surround WP, the kaolin clay crop protectant, and spray our trees, young trees especially the Sharwills. We too have found them to be heat sensitive. After you spray the trees, they are Snow White. It also helps control pests. It seems to Really help. We grow the following down here. Gem Gwen Kona Sharwill Carmen Nabal Sir Prize Lamb Hass Reed Jan Boyce Green Gold Kahalu’u Holiday Hass Mexicola Grande

Hello AE, What an amazing list of avocado varieties you have. The only ones I don't have and I expect to get them this year is: Green Gold and Kahalu’u. I've heard the folks out in TX with freezing issues but I'm sure you protect yours to keep them healthy. I'm considering the Surround WP but not a fan of the color of the trees but if it works well, I may have to consider it. Looks like we are on a journey together for future avocados. Thanks for watching!

Thanks man! Yeah, it’s a little cold here but a few C9 incandescent Christmas lights will protect them. Yeah, I agree with the the color of the Surround but after a few weeks it will fade and wash off. Thanks for great videos and keep it up. I’m definitely following along. Take care bro.

@@AE-tk9fp the things we do for our avocados. I bought a heating pad that plugs into a USB and was planning on testing that setup this winter but our winter this year was so mild.

My three attempts at Kona are the same, they didn't take the heat well... still have one limping along. I'm sticking to more hardy varities, especially as it seems our climate is becoming warmer. Best of luck.

It's super disappointing to buy a certain variety then later finding out it did not come true to the labeled type. Well at least you have 4 more chances to get the real Kona now. Thanks for leaving the 1 Kona. I picked it up this morning 🤪🙃

My Kona sharwils planted last year is exactly like yours. It grows very vigorously with about 1.5ft growth in one year. It has huge leaf(8 inch long). The new leaves are red but stem has no red freckles. As I asked the seller, she told me that’s from Brokaw nursery which have sold Sharwils for 20 yrs. But I don’t think that’s a sharwil😂

🤞 that I'll get flowers and fruit set from my big Kona this coming spring. I still have one more from Brokaw in the sleeve still that I'm debating on planting. Keep me updated on yours. Let's see how they both grow together.

Is there growth from below the graft? I have a sharwil that’s about a year old and three that I’ve grafted myself. I’d also suggest getting a green gold avocado tree as that is the offspring of the sharwil and the fruit is very similar; also, it puts out fruit just as the sharwil is finishing up it season. I’m hoping to graft both of them onto one rootstock because green gold is the only local cultivar that is A type in Hawaii.

Hi Aaron...I don't notice any growth below the graft. I've already placed an order for Green Gold and many other avocados like Palo D'oro to be available this spring through epicenter so super excited about that. Working on grafting a tree to make it produce year round fruit, just for fun. Thanks for watching and following the journey!

When I called, the main guy who was supposed to be the expert with Avocados was not around and she told me to try to call the next week. I'm curious too. I think my original Kona is a Kona because I've seen my Fuerte have the same red stems and it faded later. I didn't pay too close attention early on so it was possible my original Kona had the red too. If I find out or if you do, let me know. Thanks for watching!

The stems on new growth of real ‘Sharwil’ avocados are definitely have little red flecks, or bars, that run lengthwise along the stem and they push red new growth. The red bars do seems to fade as the plant gets larger. There’s a good site or pdf one can read about Sharwil identification from university of Hawaii if you Google Sharwill avocado identification. You might have seen it already, just wanted to share. Keep up the great videos. Watching from south Texas.

@@AE-tk9fp I agree that Sharwill avocado new stems have dark specs. I just checked my Sharwill tree to make sure it is Sharwill. Also Sir Prize tree new stems has specks on them but not as pronounced as Sharwill.

I recently read the UH article about identifying a Sharwil tree. I have a mystery grafted avocado tree that's been in the ground at least 10 years. It exhibits some characteristics of a Sharwil - burgundy colored new flush, red flecks in the stem near the new growth. When I crush up a leaf from my tree, it emits a strong anise scent. The UH article, however, states that a crushed Sharwil leaf has no anise scent to it. I've been tending to this tree for only a year or so, so haven't sampled the fruit to help identify the variety it is.
@williambutler4976
@williambutler4976 4 ай бұрын
If it were my tree , I would continue growing it and see if you get Sharwil fruit or not . Even if it’s worse case scenario and it is something else you still have a tree that has been in the ground for at least 10 years with a good established root system and you can top work it to sharwil and it should really take off.

I also have a Sharwil that doesn’t have the red bars on the new shoots. Just like yours, the leaves look like Sharwil leaves. I bought mine from a local nursery that propagates the Sharwil. Any thoughts on what yours might be if not a Sharwil?

Right now since it was la Verne nursery, the consensus is it might be a Jan Boyce. I'd be good with that. Not 100% but I'm probably going to get fruit next year so we'll see. I'll document it going forward. Thanks for watching!

Is any solution for overwatering avocado tree in pot
@AvocadoTalk
@AvocadoTalk 2 жыл бұрын
First instead of using the pre made potting mix sold at the stores, make your own: 1/3 each sand, peat moss, pumice. This mix will drain much better. If you have a potted avocado and it shows signs of root rot, you can treat it with a product called garden phos. I water my potted avocado during hot days daily. Good luck and thanks for watching!
