The "Go getter" joke literally made me LOL. I found masonry via necessity because of my old house needing repair. I discovered that I loved masonry work at the tender young age of 54. I now belong to a Bricklayers union where I am teasingly called "Apprentisaurus". I love it but it is very physically demanding, and I thank GOD for my strength and stamina at this age. I'm even going to get certified to rappel because my company does that. I have journeymen tell me they make a lot of money doing side work. It seems to be a good thing for them. Thank you for sharing decades and decades of knowledge, Mike. You have probably been the biggest influence of this career change I made. I like your style, and as a teacher, you are magnificent. My goal is to in my later years, fix old ladies' porches and get free plates of food. Sounds good to me cause my wife can't cook.

Great video Mike, Thank You for taking the time to explain the ins and outs of working in general! I remember when you could walk up to a job, meet the foreman, if they needed help they would put you to work. Now you have to get a physical, the application is 16 pages! Seriously 16 pages for the contractor I worked for. You have to wear a safety vest & safety harness, gloves and safety glasses. Don’t get me wrong, safety should be #1. We did crazy stuff back in the day. But the paper work is totally out of control. Insurance companies now rule. Staying small is the way to go! Take care.

Good advice, Mike. It's best to stay behind the scenes as much as possible working for yourself. Just doing people right will keep you in business because it really is hard for homeowners and small businesses to find dependable services. I've always used an older van to keep most of what I need and work out of, no need for a $50k plus truck to show off. Besides, if I see a guy pull up in a new shiny pick-m-up to bid I know he needs to add on some high-dollar payments. P.S. Thanks for including the Lord's word here. --Brant

I have to say that I think watching this video would be the best 50 minutes anyone planning to start a business in any field, not just masonry, could spend!
