I've only been riding for about 3 weeks and recently started filtering more and more but only ever at slow speeds
@MrSlowestD165 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it's too soon for you. You may think "you got it", and I'm sure you do, but what will inevitably happen is somebody will do something (likely non-intentional, but possibly intentional) impeding you or you'll hit a pothole or something unintended and you'll have a poor reaction and hit them and/or dump it. Those reflexes only really come with time, and at 3 weeks you don't have them. I'd recommend waiting a bit more before splitting regularly.
@corybrayshaw99275 жыл бұрын
@@MrSlowestD16 I don't do it often. Only in heavy traffic on the way to work. Literally the only time I do it 😊

@@MrSlowestD16 How about if you're an experienced cyclist? I've only just got my CBT and first motorbike but I've been filtering on a pushbike since forever. I haven't tried filtering on a motorbike yet but I reckon in 3 weeks' time I should be ready. No?
@MrSlowestD162 жыл бұрын
@@anglaismoyen Your call in the end, really depends on how conservative you want to be (or don't want to be). A motorcycle is much wider than a bicycle, and if shit happens and you have to brake hard and it starts to tip, it's nowhere near as easy to hold up as a bicycle is (300, 400, 500lbs vs what, 20? 30?). Main thing that's important I think is you don't overdo it on speed. You can gauge openings better which helps with the width, and also improves reaction time if somebody changes lanes or some shit. IDK, I've been filtering for years and I still get thrown a curve ball every now and again. 9 times out of 10 it's perfectly smooth, but every once in awhile somebody will do something stupid and will pucker up your ass a bit. I'd say the potential for incident is higher while splitting (especially if quickly) than not, but obviously the incidents aren't life threatening the vast majority of the time (vs most incidents being life threatening at speed). I haven't lane split with my bicycle before, so I can only theorize that part. I was very conservative with my learning, put lots of miles on off before I went on the highway, then put a lot of miles on before I started lane splitting. The most important thing is that you don't ride in a situation you're not comfortable in. EDIT: Another thing that's worth mentioning, filtering comes in many flavors. There's creeping through traffic to get to a traffic light 1st, which is ultra low risk. Then there's rolling through stopped traffic, which is also pretty low risk, but then there's when traffic is moving moderately (like 10, 15, 20mph) and you're going faster. That is the riskier kind of filtering because people try to jump because they think the next lane over is moving faster.
@anglaismoyen2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSlowestD16 Wow, that was a really great and detailed reply. Thanks. I actually just went for a little ride just now and did some filtering. I only did it in stationary traffic, or sub 10mph speeds, and I felt pretty comfortable with it. There were some times when I didn't bother though because the risk/effort didn't seem worth it just to skip a few cars ahead when the light was going to change soon. It's all a constant balance of risk and reward, isn't it? Thanks again for all the helpful advice :)

I think it took me only a couple of weeks before I started filtering, but I only did it sparingly. Even after a few years of riding and increased confidence over the past few years, I've only ever clipped a wing mirror once, and I immediately stopped to check for damage. Just ride safe and take your time to get to know your bike. Know how wide it is, know how slow you can ride, it's turning circle, its weight, all the little throttle nuances and such.

double white lines (where the line closest to you is solid); you may cross if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake pedal cycle, horse, or road maintenance, if they are traveling below 10mph my view on filtering has always been "don't get in to something you can't get out of", and, nobody is looking especially if they're moving

After having my CBT for 1 year I needed a job out of college, so I went to dominos and started delivering on their scooters. Job was shit and broke me mentally but the filtering experience I got was so worth it. In the space of 2 months I put in maybe 3000 miles of filtering through Glasgow city centre. Filtering through traffic became fun for me, because the scooters weren't fast but they were nippy from 0 to 30mph which is all you really need in town. I could start faster off the line than some rich kids AMG. It was great. I would encourage anybody to filter but only after they know their highway code/theory. However what I'm seeing more and more of is CBT-ers who have seen a bit too much Moto Madness and that's honestly hard to see out on the road sometimes.

Filtering is a brilliant thing and should be encouraged to be done but properly and safely. As for me if I filter past a long queue to the front I'll always stay two cars back so your not robbing that front car of their opertunity or causing a obstruction to someone's view and avoid any rage related conflict. I also think good communication with the other road users is key. State your intent early and clearly and give them a thumbs up or a friendly wave as a thank you if is obviously safe to do so.

my first filtering was at the traffic lights after I had gotten accustom to my first bike and being in traffic ect I took my self in to an aria where I know there would be a lot of other more experienced bikers and then when there was a tail back at the traffic lights meaning ALL the cars aren't moving cos they can't I'ed wait for some one on a bike that was bigger than my 125cc moped to come filtering down and follow them paying attention to when/if they stopped trying to filter and what the reasoning for may be for them stopping space is to narrow or they had to pull in to let on coming traffic pass being the main reasons, from there I started the same thing with slow moving traffic and then at some point (am not sure when) self confidence got me to that place where you no longer worry about the could I/ should I and ya just zip down to the front :D

When doing the course we were encouraged to overtake queuing traffic and filter but no more that 10mph more than the forward moving traffic. This is in the South West London area. The advice given during and before the Mod 2 was to try to advance forwards where safe and possibly. But as you said you get better with experience but don't get too cocky and try not get into bad habits as it could lead to your downfall.

I started filtering within my first couple days of riding, however I would encourage almost all new riders to not copy me with that and take your time! A big caveat to me filtering so early into riding is simple, I'd been driving a car for many years prior. I knew how the road functioned, I knew where driver attention would be focused and knew straight away how to keep myself visible, I just needed to have the feel/control of the bike sorted which again from driving a car I already had somewhat ok clutch control, it was swapping muscle memory between my left arm and leg. TAKE YOUR OWN TIME. Trying to rush things to filter quickly, get the biggest, sportiest bike you can ride is asking to wind up attached to a bumper or a tree!

The highway code states "can be used but with caution"
@Imperial-GB5 жыл бұрын
What you said about traffic lights is wrong. The red stays red for a few seconds before you get a flashing amber, thus allowing traffic that jumped the light to pass before you get there. If you look at the highway code, you'll see that on every crossing bar one (may be the puffin crossing) you can set off as soon as flashing amber appears and the crossing is clear of pedestrians
@aps-pictures93352 жыл бұрын
Note - you can go ahead of a car at a red light - but only if it isn’t zig-zag lines, or going over the stop line (red light offence). Also whilst filtering is legal, it isn’t a requirement for any other driver to move to let you.
@johnschlesinger2009 Жыл бұрын
The Highway Code is very specific about solid white lines: you must not cross or straddle a solid line on your side of the road unless you need to pass stationary obstruction, to pass a pedal cyclist or agricultural maintenance vehicle travelling at 10moh or less, or when directed to do so by a policeman or traffic warden.

As others have said, filtering should only be attempted by more experienced riders and at slow speed with care. Although filtering is legal, a judge in at least one UK court case has pointed out that it remains risky and you do not own the road space in front of you any more than say the motorist ahead or one pulling into your space. A court (and insurance company) may therefore NOT award you 100% compensation should you have an accident and injury and, as sure as eggs are eggs, you will in any case come off worse!

Yeah, I agree. The problem is anybody of any experience can filter, it's physically easy to do, but the inexperienced won't have proper reactions when somebody inevitably changes lanes in front of you or cuts you off or something, and you won't see it properly yet because you don't have that 6th sense yet and by the time you do you'll have a poor reaction. That shit just comes with time. I'd say maybe wait 3mo or something of being out on the roads, but this is just my $.02. IMO there's 2 important parts to lane splitting: 1. Proper reactions to people jumping out and what-not (which comes only with time), and 2. Knowing when to put on the brakes (proverbially) and NOT lane split - seeing a situation you can physically fit into but it's not smart to. I think it's smart to stay away from teaching this subject on the channel, especially given some of the riders out there...

Filtering is fine. Just take it slow - keep an eye on the front wheels of the cars either side - cagers will turn wheel before making a move. Watch out for open spaces in lanes as cars will move over without looking. Be aware that even if a driver sees you coming, psychologically you are not a car and they move over anyway. Rule of thumb - go a speed where you can stop if someone moves over. My rule is - consider how much it would hurt if you did crash and keep speed low! Remember speed limits still apply when filtering. Heres my video of the M25 yesterday - 31 mile tailback and drivers stuck for 8 hours! kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5vNi6yBnpWHbqs

When is a rider not a new rider. I've been riding 6 months. I've filtered, I know when to filter, where to filter to. what gaps my bike can fit in. I know to be extra extra aware while filtering. Your a piece of ham between two pieces of bread. Don't be a sandwich

Arrr ok yer that's a good idea. Tbh I'm my mod 2 I didn't really have options to filter but I get take single gaps and he had to catch up a few times 😀

Sorry but you're just wrong about zig zag lines and traffic lights. Zigzag lines you can go over 100% legallly, you just can't go past the very front vehicle. As for traffic light go right to the front.

Thing is being between cars is also high risk. Having been rear ended I can tell you, you don't want it. Thankfully no cars in front of me, had there been I would have been far worse off.

@@spicy110 ...Thanks for replying...in my opinion if you ride defensively...then you would only filter at a low speed...when everyone is stopped....as you have discovered...drivers are far from perfect....I've seen and been involved in accidents so try and avoid the next one
