Should Police Investigate Darren Grimes For ‘Publishing Hate Speech’? | Good Morning Britain

Darren Grimes is being investigated by police on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred over an interview with the historian David Starkey that he published, it has emerged.
Mr Grimes, a conservative commentator, has been asked to attend a police station to be interviewed under caution after publishing a podcast in which Dr Starkey said slavery was not genocide because there are “so many damn blacks”.
It has been warned that the investigation, by the Metropolitan Police, will have a "chilling effect" on free speech, while Mr Grimes has described it as an "abuse of taxpayers money".

I think he was driving home his argument against the claim slavery was genocide with a particular form of verbal peroration or exclamation rather than expressing hostility to black people as such. I was abroad when this happened so I listened to what he said, in context, for the first time tonight. It's the kind of colourful expressive phraseology that can be taken out of context and easily misrepresented. English people have developed a nasty habit of doing that to people and I sympathize with the good doctor for being caught out by contemporary primness. Starkey is not given to drab conventionality which I think is why a lot of people like to hear his views and others desperately want to shut him up.

The definition of genocide is "the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group". I don't see how slavery, as heinous as it is, fits into that definition.

The phrase 'dam Blacks' really was ungentlemanly and reprehensible. The rest of his point, though doubtless offensive to many many people, strikes me as legitimate, because it was true.

At that point you ought to have stopped the interview, taken him to task for what he had said, and either rerecorded that bit or at least got him to apologize for his wording.

You didn't do that, and I know why. You were a cub reporter inteviewing a much older man, a public figure, for whom you felt great respect and indeed awe. Who were you to challenge him?

In the short term the incident seemed a disaster. Dr Starkey got 'cancelled' and must have thought his career was at an end, and you yourself faced a threat of prosecution and imprisonment.

But today Dr Starkey is more famous and popular than ever, an you're well on your way to becoming a seasoned reporter and a 'householdword'..
