What David Starkey said was factually correct, even though he used clumsy language. He was challenging the narrative that the slave trade, hideous as it was, could be accurately described as genocide. It's true that many died in the transport process, but the majority survived, which was the objective. The descendants now constitute a very significant section of American society.

I cannot help wondering that if Mr Starkey was on MSM - the BBC in particular, if he would have made that statement. H was perhaps a bit more relaxed as he was being interviewed by a blogger.

"I don't agree with DS, I don't think he's a particularly nice person". It makes my skin crawl when I i hear people say this kind of thing. It's effectively saying to the "left" please don't hurt me, look I do have the correct opinions. I neither know nor care whether David Starkey is a nice person. The police are a disgrace.

I did notice her adding a qualifier to almost every point. I agree with every point she made, but when you try to justify your point with a moral qualifier to appease the people who have you in their sights you're showing that they've gotten to you a bit. Just make your points. Don't dilute them by trying to prove that you're a nice person to the very bad faith people who don't give a damn about how agreeable you are. They see it as if they've weakened you.

It grinds my gears when people use the phrase 'conspiracy theorist' as a pejorative. It implies that the idea that conspiracies exist is ludicrous. You may have a theory that there is a conspiracy. Many conspiracy theories are nonsense, but many have been proven to be correct. People do conspire against other people. You can't simply dismiss a theory with a wave of your hand as just a conspiracy theory. That's just lazy and ignorant.

@@CoffeeConnected it is just looking at events and extrapolating possibilities. There is nothing wrong with this. Just before 1920 the great Justice, Lord Moulton, wrote about “enforcing the unenforceable” and how the law should not intrude on the realm of “manners”. Lord Moulton was concerned about the State trying to mandate and then enforce "manners”. He noted that “what lies between Law and Free Choice we lose at our peril”. That there are some areas that legislation should not legislate. Pushing through a crowd is ill-mannered but not an “assault” - and could be dealt with appropriately. Something said or done that is objectionable but lawful, could be ignored or rebutted - not used as an excuse to punitively punish. There are simply too many construed grounds for action and therefore exceptionally good public policy reasons not to legislate ‘manners’; for example, the evidence is that hate speech laws do not get applied equally. Manners and 'hate speech' are in this realm where the State should not interfere but social etiquette exert its own influence.

Julia is a republican and a social and cultural liberal. She is also quite limited when it comes to seriously thinking about the issues. David Starkey, on the other hand, is a considerable intellect and is absolutely fascinating to listen to. His level of knowledge is quite rare these days. He is clumsy with his words sometimes but the main point he was making in the Grimes interview was that slavery cannot be accurately described as a genocide because the intention was that the slaves would survive in order that they could work. I miss Starkey and he contributes far more to the political debate than Hartley-Brewer, who is actually quite lightweight and shallow.

Grimes made a HUGE mistake apologizing right away. Hasn't he been paying attention to how this works? If you apologize you are admitting guilt and they come after you even more. The rules of decency and civility are out the window. When he apologized right away, I unsubscribed from his podcast. people will think that is horrible but I've seen this far too many times as it is. When it comes to totalitarians, never apologize. Never defend yourself. That is simply how it has to be. In fact, it's time to respond by calling them what they are. Totalitarians. People need to stop rolling over and being doormats. Grimes has a platform and there was a lot of pushback on what was done to him. But what about the average guy that doesn't have that? Grimes sold them out.

I agree with the Hartley-Brewer girl on many things, but she and others are totally wrong to say that people are surrendering their hard-won freedoms over the covid rules. During the world wars, and other wars, men from Great Britain went off and sacrificed their lives and present existence for a hoped-for better future for themselves, their families and their country. It is exactly the same with covid: people are are putting their lives on-hold for the benefit of others. This is sacrifice, just as it has been in the past. Hartley-Brewer, says she loved the way that the country came together, but it is the rhetoric of people like her that is pulling the country apart. As far I can see, the government is steering the best course it can while many loud voices are assuming an authority and understanding that they don't really possess. Yes, this has been unbearably tough for some, just as it was in 1939-45, but in WWII they carried on anyway. Then they won.
