Is the Grand National too dangerous for horses and jockeys and should one of the biggest days in the racing calendar be boycotted?
Envoye Special died after a fatal injury on the first day of the Aintree meet and that was in addition to four horses dying in last year's three-day event.

Throughbred horses wouldn't even exist without racing FACT!!! I have to say they are over 99%of time treated unbelievably well. Like all things in life always risk. We pet owners suffer many injuries, fatalities to our own dogs, cats, horses whatever animal maybe. Wild horses life span is significantly less than racehorse on average. I wish animal rights get their figures right and not sensational things. You can see some horses, ponies in neighborhoods not in great condition. Well done to Kevin here as comes across as a fine young man and more importantly a genuinely honest and horse lover. Alex was less honest here with figures and also saying he visited some stud farms/ trainers when pressed in Newcastle area yet couldnt name. In short racehorses have in vast majority of cases a wonderful Life. They really do. Their grooms in particular form wonderful bonds everyday 365 days. Wonderful animals who are genuinely loved and cared for so we'll.

There was a lot of emphasis on the dangers of racing itself, which are real but which the industry is trying to minimise, but not much emphasis on another aspect… the fate of those horses which do not make the cut. For every horse that goes on to have a successful racing career, there will be several which do not, because they’re not fast enough or for some other reason. There is no way that these animals are simply maintained as expensive pets, so where do they go? They are generally unsuitable for other equine disciplines or as pleasure riding horses except in the very experienced hands of someone who has the skills and patience to “rehabilitate” them, because they are programmed for the track; they are certainly unsuitable for inexperienced riders. So again the question, what happens to them all? Some may be kept as breeding stock but horses that fall short are less likely to be considered beneficial to the bloodline. There are charitable organisations set up to care for and re-home them, but they must have a limited capacity. There is no question that a number of them end up being sold for slaughter, either directly or though intermediaries; the only question is how many, which is hard to determine as this is not the type of information owners are anxious to share.

All very true I’m afraid!! Very depressing? Look how greyhounds no longer wanted for racing were, not very long ago and possibly still being sent, exported from Ireland to China to be used for human consumption! Some of them actually cooked while still alive!! After a video of a greyhound being cooked alive started automatically on Facebook I sobbed like a child and am now vegan and rescue animals. I still think back to that and want to cry! Should I admit that, possibly not but anyone that wouldn’t find that horrific scene very emotive I would say there’s something very wrong with them!!!

Alex claims horse racing is cruel but presented no facts and figures and seemingly lied about having visited a stable when asked to provide the name of the trainer. My advice to Alex is to quote to him what a wise man once said "it's better to keep ones mouth shut and let others believe you are a fool than open it and take away all doubt" Sadly these people claim to be protecting the welfare of horses will by trying to disrupt the race be doing the exact opposite by upsetting them and ultimately risk the horses welfare as well as the jockeys and spectators. It's like the time I saw an extinction rebellion protestor cleaning up grafitti after a protest in Leeds using a jetwasher powered by a petrol powered generator, you couldn't make it up...

There has been a shift in emphasis towards rehoming and retraining of racehorses. Yes some may go to slaughter, but it is done with regret and in the kindest way. They are not sold to a slaughterhouse. Most will be rehomed.

People who support this cruel race do not understand that horses are sensitive animals and they will run and run until they literally drop. The fences must be drastically lowerd. When a horse shows signs of being tired the whip should not be used. I don't normally have much time for protesters especially when they are holding up the traffic but I agree with this lot. All the rich horsy toffs are trying to blame them. So what about all the other horses that have died when there were no protesters. On Saturday some twit commentator was trying to compare this to motor racing and boxing saying all sport is dangerous. The difference is people make a choice to take part in these sports but the horses have no choice. So nice try mate but there is no comparison. I’m new to horse racing and it does upset me greatly when a horse dies but I’ve been to the last two Lambourn open days and seen for myself in eight different stables how well looked after and loved these horses are . To say that they’re abused and the people in racing have no feelings for them is rubbish. Ive just read an article about a horse called Master Tommy Tucker who sadly died and all involved we’re devastated because they loved him. If you want proof of how happy and contented these horses are just look at the video of Banbridge arriving back at his stables after his win at Aintree.

Statistically a horse is just as likely to die in a field as in a race, they will die, all animals die. Farming does not get similar protesting on animal welfare , but those animals are often working much harder all their lives compared to racehorses.

There would not be so many horses at this level if it were not for competition. You may say that would be a good thing, but it's a huge industry world wide, mostly well regulated, mostly very high standards. In my lifetime veterinary practices have been developed due to the wealth invested. So horses in the UK are mostly well looked after, and have a nice life. It is not a natural life

These horses are bred for running and jumping they love it , how many times do you see a jockey come off yet the horse carries on, theres a lot of very ill informed people that say the horses dont want to run and are forced, ridiculous, tbh I find boxing violent and dangerous, I choose not to watch it yet I dont go around protesting or preaching as I know others love to watch it, also i know nothing about boxing just like these people who know nothing about horse racing, keep your noses out!!

@@name-ce7sn They are called racehorses for a reason mate they are bred to race. They are looked after unbelievably well and the grand national now arguably is safer than some other tracks such as Cheltenham after the fences where modified for the dogodders like your good self.
