It’s not only that he hasn’t written the text. He’s probably afraid to publish the first half and later realize that a storyline should have taken another route.

That definitely would be a problem, but at some point he just has to commit to what he’s written. He eventually has to publish the story, so something will inevitably get set in stone

I believe he already has, the dany plot line needed to be more focused on Westeros the entire time, but since he didn’t do that in books 1-3 he had to spend 4-5 setting everything up. Personally, I think Danys story needed to be way shorter and she should’ve came over at the end of book 4/5 timeline

I don't get why he refuses to do this. There is some young talented writer out there who understands GRRMs work. He could really help out a struggling writer while at the same time giving the fans what they want and allowing him to get to other projects he wants to do. It isn't that difficult for a writer to adopt someone's style and they can bounce ideas off each other. It is mind boggling he doesn't do this after being stuck on the same book for 15 years.

i definately agree. he seems to have no problem surrendering his unfinished works up to showrunners to run amok with, but is reticent to get some collaboration going on with his written works. but i guess it all comes down to workflow and personality. maybe the way he writes this series is just fundamentally incompatible with collaboration. as far as splitting and publishing and whatnot, i dont care one way or the other. i waited this long, so i can keep waiting if i have to. the man is only 76, he could still live another 20 years.

@@oswinhull4203 I think he's, in some ways, paralyzed by his own decisions. I personally think he is 'dug in' on the idea of writing it himself, and also potentially 'dug in' on not seeing it split, and so subconsciously the things he decides and writes all push back against those possibilities. I think we're at the point that he needs to make a fundamental change in how he does things, but is too stubborn to admit this, and also frustrated with himself in a way he feels only HE can solve. This happens to creative types a lot. It's hard to accept help, and I'm not sure anyone around him feels comfortable giving him pushback (or if they do, it's probably dismissed or taken as criticism, something he struggles with).

@@halocat4077He is dug in alright. He has practically built himself a bunker. In a sort of twisted way all of his reflecting on mortality and legacy along with the adversity he is facing is probably good for his creativity. At this point, I just feel bad for all the fans that have died inbetween 2011 and now waiting for Winds. All those fans disappointed and that really will never get to see the end of their favorite book series. George has no excuses, and his publisher should have dropped his ass as soon as he proposed Fire and Blood instead of delivering on his first series. I don’t know what kind of contract he has, but clearly his publisher didn’t write one good enough to motivate their writer. At this point, if we ever get a conclusion to ASOIAF, I’m afraid it’s going to be released posthumously.

I think the book that should come would essentially be a 3rd volume of ADwD - it would wrap up the four big battles, get (f)Aegon on the Iron Throne and the Boltons out of Winterfell. You wouldn't have any Jon (obvs), Dany, Bran, Arya, Jaime, Brienne or Davos chapters. And HOPEFULLY it would get George to where he needs to be in terms of the beginning of TWoW - where winter comes and the dragons are about to invade. God knows what he'd call this book though...

I write ASOIAF fanfiction. The current story I'm working on still has to cover the main book plots, albeit with different outcomes due to the domino effect. I knew it would be a long story, so I split it. My timeline is mainly a mixture of books and some show plots. I initially believed I would cover it all in 3 parts. Especially after I completed the first act in one book. Oh, I was a sweet summer child. I have condensed it by not needing to cover much of Dany's arc as the changes don't affect her plot. If I included her plot, I'd just be posting the existing chapters written by George. I didn't need to cover Brienne, Lady Stoneheart or much of Stannis. Yet I've still written 423.5k words and I'm not even a quarter of the way through the story. I must stress, mine is based on the original story with a twist. I started off thinking I could wrap it up in 750k words. Then 1m words, then 1.5m words. I now expect it to be closer to 2m words, and that is already without those massive plotlines. If my condensed story will still need 2m words to complete it, George will need about 3m to finish the story. The current books written by George combined are 1.7m words. He might just about get away with 3 very very large books. Doing it in 4 would be better. So yes, I think Winds will have to be split, but he needs it to be chronological.

George should supervise the younger writer(s) closely to finish his work. Give them the key outlines and make sure they won't ruin it like what happened in the show. In case he dies, at least he can make sure that the story is now in safe hands.

I don't think splitting it is a good idea unless you want George to take even longer to finish the story. A new ASOIAF book would take him away from writing because he'll do interviews, press tours and signings instead. Just more distractions on top of the list.

The Winds of Winter (part 1) A Time for Wolves (part 2) A Dream of Spring (complete)

@Ancor_Vantian 14 күн бұрын
A time of Wolves would come _after_ A Dream of Spring. Also, it’s _not_ Winds part 1 and Spring part 2. It would be Winds 1 and _Winds part 2_ and then we switch to Dream. There’s just _too_ much for George with whatever is left of his life. Edit: I just remember. I’ll go a step even further. It _will_ most likely be Winds 1 and 2 as you have to keep in mind “at least” one third 1/3 of Winds are actually Feast for Dragons left overs.

This is all such non-news. 200 pages is book-length. So Martin has had enough for a book for years. Martin underestimates his stories. It took him five books to finish the first part of his trilogy, and some of those books had to be subdivided into more books by many publishers. "George RR Martin has many pages for A Song of Ice and Fire and can't finish what he had planned in one book" is a statement that would have been true every year since the 90s.

For me, 3 things are aligning to make George publish the 1st part of Winds: - either he's reached the magical number of pages or he's reaching it, so the editors would have to publish Winds in 2 tomes; - he's too tired of the constant pressure from fans to "finish the damn books", which shows, as he has stopped mentioning his progression; - he wants to tell his side of his story, which, according to some of his later Not a Blog posts, HBO is abusing.

@@jgr7487 splitting the book and releasing a part 1 would definitely help to alleviate a lot of the stress George is currently dealing with. I know he really wants to release the Winds he’s always had in mind but I think at this point, it’s better for him to just focus on what he has and run with it. For his own health, and selfishly for us fans too haha

Zeno's paradox of publishing _Winds._ Winds must be split into two. Part Two of Winds must be split into two. Part Four of Winds must be split into two. Part Five of Winds must be split into two. Eventually we will get Part Eleven, one page long, and then twelve years later, Part Twelve, half a page long. In the 22nd century we will get portions of single letters.

Hey guys, Jimmy from Bend the Knee. All I did was read what I was told, I never said the release was imminent or for sure happening. The point of me saying it was to counter folks who were convinced he’s never really written a word of winds minus what was cut from ADWD. I regret saying it now because of what it turned into, especially mentioning Shawn by name. I thought it was a piece of optimism that was harmless, and felt like a good thing after GRRM remark about never finishing Winds (I felt like the remark was sarcastic personally and then ran with). Cheers.

When raise the question of how he could squeeze various things in if he had written a trilogy, you are forgetting that the story would have been entirely different so all those things would not necessarily be part of the story nor even be relevant to it. Refer back to the letter of George RR Martin's original description of the envisioned plot with Lannisters attacking Winterfell and Catelyn fleeing north of the wall.
