The concourse, clubhouse and bleachers are new. But main grandstand seating is exactly the same as when I was a kid 30 years ago. They rebuilt a lot but not everything and it shouldn’t be rebuilt. Its fine the way it is. If you dont like it, take the el train 30 minutes soutb and buy a sox ticket and feck off.

The Cubs ownership just renovated Wrigley a few years back. They made a new dugout, lifted the stadium, opened the concourses & changed the scoreboard. I don't think Wrigley needs anymore renovations. It's perfect the way it is. 😊

I think they need to go to a more cantilevered design to hold up the upper deck the way all the newer stadiums are constructed. That way, they can get rid of those poles that hold up the upper deck that block a lot of the views of game on the field.

I agree with you, I was just there for a tour, its a ball park to watch a baseball game at and drink some beer. They don't need the modern amenities to get people there for people to not watch the game.

I think Wrigley Field is fine the way it is now. If you "modernize" it by taking away the pillars and adding luxery boxes, 1) it'll ruin the stadium and 2) there's no room to build any of that. Compare old Comisky to new Comisky. Both have around the same compacity but the new stadium is more massive. You can't have the upper deck right on top of the lower deck without pillars. The pillars can't handle the added weight of luxury boxes and there's no room in between the decks for them. The concourses are crampt enough as it is, so taking away more space from them isn't an option either. The only way to make this stadium "modern" is to remove huge amounts of seats and have whole sections of "luxury suites" or "party decks" or what have you. It won't work.

You're correct. I've pointed this out to people I've gone to Oracle Park with, as it sort of is like Wrigley. The upper decks there are set way back, barely hanging over the lower deck, not like at Wrigley where the second deck overhangs over half the lower deck.

I agree with you. I was just there for a tour, I don't think anyone want to change anything and the reno they just did was to make sure its structurally sound and will last another 100 years. They have 4 club sections with bars under the stands, they did this so people would be out watching the game and have suites and patios. also the bleachers in the outfield are GA so that's a fun atmosphere

We’re lucky to have Wrigley. They had to essentially reinvent to wheel to make it structurally stable as part of the renovations. Not long ago the consensus was that it couldn’t be saved.

If only Seals Stadium had the architecture to have added a second deck. Candlestick never would have been built. Maybe Bay Meadows Racetrack south of San Francisco down the Peninsula half way would have become the home of the 49ers way back in the late 60s.

I'm very unclear as to what is being proposed here, if the seating configuration stays the same what advantage is their to changing the sectioning? Is this just an aesthetic thing, do people think smaller sections look better? And modernizing the exterior? The entire aesthetic beauty of Wrigley Field is that it has preserved the jewel box ballpark architecture of the 1910s and 1920s. This is like arguing that exterior of the Chrysler Building or St. Peter's Basilica needs to be modernized, it's baffling. Their value is in their preservation. Any renovations should be focused on the following: maintaining structural integrity, restoration of aging/weathered components, visitor comfort, amenities (food quality, bathrooms), and accessibility. The aesthetics should, as much as possible, be preserved. Same goes for Fenway and Dodger Stadium.

Apparently you didn't realize that the 1060 project happened. That whole lower bowl was already rebuilt. Everything was shored up and redone. There is a video out talking about what they did. It's over an hour long, definitely worth the check out.

A dump? Wrigley Field a dump? The upper deck at Wrigley Field puts you closer to the action than many ballparks' expensive terrace seating and corporate suites. Most people go to ballparks to watch baseball, not to evaluate their architecture. Modern ballparks make the cheap seats more expensive and further away from the field. The Cubs are able to make a handsome profit while preserving a good fan experience. Don't fix what isn't broke. Thanks for the new English word "reconfigurated," though.

They did a lot more than just redo the outfield seating and add wrigleyville. Also you can’t consider redoing the upper deck a “cosmetic” change as you have to essentially rebuild the stadium to make sure it’s structurally safe for a “split upper deck” they put in a brand new foundation over the course of the 2010s to make sure it’s structurally safe now. As if anyone knew how much of an actual dump wrigley was before the ricketts purchased the team. It was in bad shape. The stadium would literally sway left to right. When they dug up foundation pieces they found out the old supports were so bad that there were almost no concrete left in the ground. They put almost a billion into the 1060 project and right now it’s probably a top 5 park for amenities and things to do. There’s a documentary on the 1060 project it’s a really cool video and a awesome learning experience into what all they did and the efforts the rickets went through to renovate wrigley vs finding a new neighborhood

I went to Wrigley for a game for the first time this week. Using the word ‘dump’ to describe it in any capacity is a war crime. I walked the whole stadium. Everything looked beautiful, clean, well-maintained. The renovations were as advertised. The seating bowl and second deck were outstanding AS IS. So the sections aren’t divided like a modern stadium? Why do they NEED to be?! These are changes no one is asking for. It’s like going back to A New Hope and having Gredo shoot first.

The design is old, but the stadium overall is pretty much new. It was rebuilt to pretty much look the same for a reason and they aren’t going to rebuild it again after only six years.

You cannot be serious in comparing the costs between refurbishing the Rogers Centre and Wrigley Field. That is not comparing apples to apples. One is a stadium built in the late 1980s and most likely follows many of the modern construction methods. The other was built in the 1910s and need much more effort to bring it up to modern standards. Refurbishing any structure old as that is always going to cost more than the modern equivalent. And given that they just spent 750 million a few years ago on the outfield improvements and other things around the ballpark, you're not going to see anything change for the forseeable future. Mr. Ricketts is pretty rich, but not stupid rich (relatively speaking). The Cubs need to see some return on that investment before spending big bucks on another.

You mentioned the lower bowl needing work. They just completely gutted the lower bowl a few off-seasons ago. The concrete is new, the clubhouses are new, and the foundation of the pillars were restored. As for the upper deck? They added more restroom and concession locations for better convenience. They also had a restoration project on the press box. As with the exterior, they removed the concrete panels and chain-link fencing, and installed a wrought iron facade as its replacement along the terrace level. Also, they installed terra cotta roofing to the street-level facade. The wrought iron and terra cotta facades were put in as a nod to what the ballpark looked like in the golden age of baseball. So as far as “modernizing” the upper deck, or any other areas of the ballpark, it feels like they’ve already done most of the work. The way the upper deck is configured is perfectly fine for me and I don’t believe anything else really needs to be done. The only other thing I can think of for the upper deck is the upkeep and maintenance on the health of the concrete structure itself. But as far as any expansion, I’m not sure how that would happen. Unless they build vertically, due to the limited space they have with the ballpark’s surroundings to expand outwards, or horizontally. I mean, if you build vertically, you’d also be building horizontally as well, if you’re adding more seats and going up a slope… if that makes sense. Edit: You kept referring to “the outfield”, those seats out there are actually called “the bleachers.”

Something tells me this guy hasn't been to or done significant research on almost all of the venues he talks about. A lot of his opinions on these venues come off as unpolished, somewhat lacking in both context and research. Start with Dodger Stadium. At 0:50, the idea of taking out any seats would never be a consideration for the Dodgers because of the nature in which the stadium was built. They have an agreement with the Chavez Ravine neighborhood that caps their stadium at 56k seats. To decrease the capacity would be to decrease the Dodgers' leverage with the neighborhood. To wit, every single renovation in that stadium's history has maintained that capacity. Now to Wrigley. Splitting the upper deck at Wrigley would be a significant investment. There's basically no concourse for the upper deck and that would have to be built anew; you basically go up there from the lower deck and you're already at the cross aisle. It's not even worth comparing costs between Rodgers Centre and Wrigley. The construction concerns of the two venues are obviously different. You also couldn't do much with the lower bowl, given how shallow the slope of the bowl already is and how close to the bottom of the upper deck the last row gets. I'm also pretty sure people complained about the video boards.

It's a National Historic Landmark, as is Fenway. They CAN'T make major renovations without making sure the historic stuff remains. And, the F line is the workhorse of the upper deck and got fixed in 2015, it's not going to be removed or fixed.

What the Cubs did with Wrigley Field is beyond amazing. I grew up at Wrigley and Comiskey. Back in the days, it sucked, now it is perfect. Not outdated one bit. Putting in those scoreboards, lit off a bitch fest. The Cubs almost moved to Rosemont because of the complaints over the boards. The brick idea is a fad. Wrigley never had a brick exterior. As for the Sox, move to the burbs. Guaranteed Rate Field is a disaster.

Right. The owners of the rooftop clubs located across from the ballpark on Waveland and Sheffield Avenues were all angry about the new video boards blocking the view of the field. The matter went to court, but the Ricketts family won. They wound up buying most of those rooftop clubs; in order for the team to realize a significant portion of the revenue from those rooftop seats.

Old Yankee stadium recieved a huge renovation in the 1970s, you can still preserve the historic look and feel but make it a more pleasant experience. A dome in Los Angeles is never going to happen. First, like you said, Dodger stadium has another 20 years left (at least). What they’ll do next is put an overhang to provide more shade to the fans. It would be great to develop some of the land around it to small commercial such as restaurants etc. But even if they ever choose to build another stadium they are not going with a dome. The fans will quickly crucify this idea.

With all due respect, can you please be a little more specific on your suggestions? What, exactly, do you mean by "more modern?" What, exactly, is dated by the seating bowl? Practically every park opened since 1992 incorporates retro features, albeit with modern facilities. What, exactly, is renovated Wrigley Field missing with respect to modern amenities that can be added without detracting from the charm of the park? (Contrary to what you assert, the charm of the park comes from more than just the outfield bleachers and the ivy on the walls.) Have you actually been to Wrigley Field? Are you familiar with the ballpark and the changes that have happened there? What, specifically, is so outdated about seating in the lower bowl? The seats were all realigned in the mid-1960s to face toward the infield. The seats--including in the upper deck--are very close to the field. The fans have a great view of the action. If you want concessions, there are plenty of those below the lower bowl and, for fans in the upper deck, there are concessions that have been added outdoors and behind the upper deck (similar to Camden Yards). You make brief mention of "splitting the upper deck" with no explanation or example for the viewer to understand what you mean. Your reference to additional luxury boxes and a renovation of the press box is similarly vague. Finally, your frequent references to the need to "modernize" the seating bowl (without describing what that means) provides no clear imperative for such a drastic renovation other than your belief that Wrigley Field looks outdated. Likewise, your comments on Dodger Stadium are similarly misguided. Why does Dodger Stadium need a retractable roof? Entire seasons are played there without rainouts. There are plenty of other ballparks with more oppressive daytime heat. Have you ever endured the humidity in Chicago or Washington, DC in the summer? I'd like to know what prompted this video. I've seen nothing to indicate anyone is thinking of the renovations you discuss. I suppose this was prompted by your own assessment of trends. In that vein, your emphasis on a "modern" look to include the latest external design features has led you astray. Contrary to your assessments, Wrigley Field has been modernized sufficiently to attract the modern fan and earn sufficient revenue without detracting from its charm. Were your proposals to be implemented, Wrigley Field would no longer be a historic landmark. It would be no different from most MLB parks of the last 30 years. It would no longer be Wrigley Field except in name only. This proposal is even more misguided than the renovation of Soldier Field. That renovation, ill-thought as it was, was the result of an untenable effort to keep the tenants playing in the same location. Wrigley Field faces no such situation it is a fully serviceable major league ballpark. Undertaking these proposed renovations will shorten the life of Wrigley Field by taking away its charm.

No. If you keep updating, at some point, you end up questioning what's left of the park that opened in 1914. Rogers Center is more dated than Wrigley, honestly. And Wrigley never had a brick exterior, so why add one? Leave the Friendly Confines alone. You want to make it less friendly.

There is a reason Wrigley Field consistently ranks in the top five of all MLB Parks. Seeing a game there is an experience that only Fenway and Dodger Stadium can even come close to. Plenty of multimillion dollar “modern” stadiums that have come and gone in Wrigley’s lifetime. And plenty modern stadiums have difficulty filling seats. Wrigley Field is averaging 96% of capacity this year. Attendance was over 40,000 today. Chicago loves Wrigley Field just like it is. Your opinion is baloney. Wrigley Field is iconic. No one cares what you think. Lol

I wouldn't be opposed to having the upper deck "modernized" where you can get rid of the pillars in the lower bowl and the upper deck. If they could do that and keep the same exact look that would be awesome. I'm not sure what you mean by reconfigure the lower bowl. You kept saying that but you never expanded on what needs to be done. Side note: Dodger stadium is awful. I don't know why you kept talking about it like it was fine. That POS needs to be torn down and thrown into the ocean.

Dude You have NO IDEA what you’re talking about,, The cubs re-did the lower bowl and added 3 major clubs underneath the seats, now the upper deck is another story, but the lower bowl was given a major major overhaul about 5 years ago
