Hey there Bill and Elizabeth! Just wanted to let you know what an encouragement you two are to me. Y'alls story is just about identical to that of ours. My husband was a home builder back when everything crashed. We lost just about everything also. By God's grace we were able to hold on to one investment property we were in the middle of flipping . We moved into our little fixer upper in a poor neighborhood just to have a roof over our heads! A neighborhood in which we would NEVER have considered in our old lives. We had been able buy the sad little house outright with only a small amount of cash a year or so earlier and had just slowly been working on it. If we had not had it we would have been sleeping on some family members couch or on the streets. It's amazing how ones perspective on life can change! How what seems a disaster is just a blessing from God. He has changed us for His good---and ours! Did I mention that we still live in that "sad little house "? Only now it is a cute, cozy little cottage full of love and gratitude. We also experience much of what you guys seem to be experiencing. People just can't figure out why we continue to live the way we do. We also never want to go back in debt. I had rather know what we have is ours and if we ever do get to build something else it will be very small and paid for with cash. We would love to be out in the country with an acre or two someday. If that dream is ever realized we will be thankful for what the Lord provides. But best of all is that we are thankful for what He provides NOW! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH DEAR FOLKS!

Hi Elizabeth and Bill, love your video, you are wise people and what others think you should go bigger, no way. The only thing it would do is dettes and accumulate more stuff that you don't need. I think what you are doing is great! If all of us could just do that one simple thing by keeping the clutter in our lives down to a minimum. I have started on that myself as i have collected way to much stuff. I have half of my bedroom re-done and a lot of things i have sold off. I bought a new computer desk ($100) and a TV stand ($69) all on sale and of nice quality. I saved over $200 dollars and had saved $60 on shipping also. I got so tired of the clutter and didn't need even half of what i had. I still have some things to get rid still but i am working on it! I hope that even if someone doesn't get the living in a tiny house way of living that you are doing, that maybe they can just reduce the clutter that they have gotten and see the how much of a difference it can make in their lives.

Funny you mentioned the Little House books. My mom, who lives with us grew up near where Laura lived in Wisconsin, and my grandpa had her aunt Laura for a grade school teacher. I'm very thankful that God gave me parents who grew up appreciating a simple life. And last week when we had 50 below wind chills, I thanked God I was not born in the caveman era, but have a cozy home. Blessings!

My husband and I pretty much lived in a 5th wheel we bought for two years. 2008-2010. Traveled to some of his contract jobs. I LOVED IT! But his health will not allow us to travel in it and he is the collector, packrat and will not let go of stored stuff. We have done a reverse mortgage to enable us to have his parents house we now live in. But, I want so bad to live again full time in my RV so I hold on to it. He is 11 years older than I am. Thinking ahead if I become a widow I will jump on moving into my RV again and either a 55 older community or on some land I can buy in the country. I am 65 and hubby is 76. I love your cozy tiny house!!! I agree about having a hot tub. I would build a tiny sauna like space in the sun room and put a nice size claw foot tub in it for soaking away aches and pains. That is my dream. I don't want to fiddle with chemicals. I just want a nice big bathtub. I do remember my mother in law was told not to ever soak in a hot tub because of her bad heart and medication. In life it's always something. I am grateful for the abundance of water we have for hot showers. That is a blessing!!! I often think of poor folks who walk for miles just for a drink of dirty water.

Very wise thinking! My house was 1000 sq ft for over 30 years, until I added 480 sq ft for my Mom to live with me. So true that if you add space you fill it up! I always thought that if I had some extra space my home would be perfect. Now I just have more filled in space. UGH. I am in a several year project to get rid of 'stuff'. One practice for young people who do need to build credit rating for getting a mortgage or vehicle loans. You can still be debt free - save the money for a purchase, put a purchase on a credit card right after the billing cycle ends. Then pay the bill right before the payment date. It takes some organization but it will help with the credit score. I was never a credit card person and I am so glad of that, what money I had didn't go to interest and finance charges. When my house was paid off I was truly debt free.

If you are allowed to swap out trailers, I would consider finding a bigger newer used RV that you can save for and pay cash for then swap the new for the old and move all you new appliances from the old to the new. As long as it's an RV. building code issues should not be a issue. Don't know where you live, but you can find something here on the 6k to 8k price range. Take a look on Craig's list at the end of the summer. Good luck and Life is what you make it.

Glad to see you address the very real property tax issue! You are both very smart but I would hate to see you suffer if your long term retirement plan for rental unit stumbles due to bad tenants or an economy where people simply can not pay rent. What could you do now/soon to your tiny homestead that could save you big money later? Have you considered authoring and publishing books on this debt free subject or "how to" books on construction and developing organizing skills that would provide income? Keep up the great work ... it is very helpful in so many ways!! Thank you!!

Just thought I mention some options for the sun room... There are products specifically sold for backyard metal structures that are only around a quarter inch thick, usually 5mm of insulation sandwiched between two foil sheets of aluminum that serve both as a thermal break and radiant barrier that should help with the summers, though may not be sufficient for the winters. But, since you own the land (assuming nothing is below) you could also consider geothermal... Past the first 4-6 feet of earth, the soil and rock below are always an average of +/- 55 degrees F.(depending on latitude) and is a option homesteaders have used successfully to live comfortably off-grid... It's will definitely be a big project but would help keep that structure at a near constant temperature all year round... Alternative is a green roof... Requires proper setup and occasional maintenance, especially in the winter if you get more than 4" of snow but is a lot more effective than planting a tree for shade and works year round... Though, less effective than the geothermal with thin insulation combination... Or do all of the above and you could probably use it for storing perishables, batteries, etc.

When you give the weather report, the depth of your water line and the architecture of your shed where you reside mimics the weather where we reside here in upstate New York. The shed will be a great help for your storage needs. What we do for retirement camp conversions (for people who retire to live in their camps away from the rat race of city life) are to build an "Adirondack" roof over the home. This type of roof is a pitched roof (5/12 or 4/12) supported by 6X6 posts, installed on concrete pads below the frost line, spanning the outside of your mobile home. This allows for the snow load and residual spring melting runoff. Great Videos!

I've been in renovated travel trailers and in new Tiny Homes. The travel trailers are so much more cumfy and livable. Her is something to consider! My friend renovated a similar trailer. After living in it a year, he built a pavilion around the the whole thing to keep the rain and snow permanently off the roof and siding. Keeps his home cooler in the summer also as the home has shade.

My husband and I lived in an RV for 5 yrs. We loved it! The only thing I missed was a bathtub. So my hubby went to Tractor Supply and bought me a 110 gal animal trough and an on demand water heater that runs on propane. He set it up under an easyup with sides for privacy. That was 12 yrs ago and we are still using it this day. This might be a nice alternative to a hot tub for you, and there a no nasty chemical to deal with. Enjoy!

You should consider getting a piece of property to make into an RV park. Lots of money to be made, less maintenance as you only need a slab & some hookups. The people maintain their own RV's. They pretty much stay full all the time. Lot's of people living in RV's now. Lots of rent money to be made & you could retire soon.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
I've considered that. Also, I drive an 18 wheeler and I park it in a lot about a mile from here. Truck parking spots can cost as much as $150/month to rent. I've thought about buying an acre or two, and making it into a truck parking lot. I don't have to maintain a slab or hookups. Snowplowing is the only expense. 30 trucks spots could bring in really good money.

Solution maybe to the sun-room, floating wood floor and for insulation Mylar backed foam sheets. They don't take up a lot of room and they can be used right up against the roof and walls like ply-wood they are about 3/4" to1" thick. You can also add them to the under side of the floor. Then add a wood stove to the room for heat....just a thought. Less cost than a new room for sure. New to following your channel, went on a marathon really enjoy watching your videos. Hope to join the ranks of the debt free soon.

Blown in insulation, that sticky stuff like they use in roller skating ranches might be something to check into for the sun room. If you put a portable propane heater or wood stove, could you use the sun room in the winter as is for just once in awhile? U could also carry the portable propane heater out to the shed if you wanted to work in there during the winter. I do that with my little craft shop as I like to work with wood. A 5 gallon charcoal propane tank with a 20,000 BTU heater and that will warm a pretty good area and a tank or two would last you all winter as it does me.

Humbly would like to add a few thoughts. We started in a mobile home I was living in when we married, then bought a larger one, then a small starter home, then another large mobile, moving from one into another as we sold them, and totally debt-free. Then we bought a large home (before they were building megahouses) debt-free and then the trouble started, when we took out an equity loan to do some things. NEVER get into debt..ever...anyone. You don't know the future! I was a broker and my hub an agent. We saw people get into tons of debt to 'get rich' by flipping houses and land. We are now, finally, ONLY thanks to God miraculously debt-free again as of last week. So, here are my thoughts you could consider, sweet couple: I would not rent out your RV tiny house because of who would be interested in that home and its' age and risks with the wood stove with a tenant, plus the upkeep of the land. I checked what I think is your area in $/sf of condos, which can be $100+- it looks like, not knowing exactly where you are. My suggestion is to consider looking at a condo as a rental property because of less upkeep, security, lower taxes, etc. You would then have a paid off tinyhouse you're in and enjoy, a condo as a rental unit..and almost no-upkeep comparatively to a house, which condo also should bring you rent at as good a net profit as a house. It would also be a possibility for you, when you are older and don't want the upkeep of the property you're on now, or of a house in general, to move into the condo yourself. You could sell the RV tinyhouse at that time at a nice profit and purchase another condo/rental property. Thanks for listening. That's very simple and suggested on the basis of what your needs/wants seem to be from your comments. You already know the headaches that could result from going into any kind of business involving starting a park, parking lot, etc., etc. But just depends on your goals, of course.

God bless you folks. I realy enjoy watching your videos. I have a question to ask you: Have you prepared your tiny house for a wind storm? When I was a kid my parents and I lived in a single-wide mobile home. Dad secured the trailer by wrapping a cable on each end and in the middle over the roof and attached to poured cement into the ground. It survived two bad windstorms. The trailer frame was twisted a little but we never lost our home at least.

And as for the sunroom, have you thought about using those interlocking rubber or foam mats on the floor and a little solar heater? It wouldn't help if its bitter cold, but it may extend the amount of time per year you could use it. We actually did that with a sun porch once. We got to use it until November instead of October, and could start using it in March instead of April. So we got two extra months out of it per year 😊

Hi, Love to watch your vids. I have found that when it comes to new rv's, a brand new unit can have maintenance issues right out of the box, so to speak. It's disappointing yet true. You made the right choice, especially with your skill set. Bravo!!

Words so wise....turn a stressful thing around...make it an adventure! I love that! The things you are mentioning that you need to do to live in a tiny house, I am doing all that anyway living in my "bigger" house. And I have a huge mortgage. I could do without so much hassle and expense and live just as well.

I admire you both for your journey. Love your "live simple - live free" Philosophy AND realization where all good things come from....congrats. I am in 575 sf, but have a mortgage and having hard time convincing wife to downsize further, which means moving away from her friends. You are so fortunate to own the land as that is the biggest negative that many tiny followers dont realize. Much more easy to use an RV or mobile than find a place to park a tiny house. Love your videos. God Bless.

I completely agree that you learn to adapt to your abode. I am also debt free in a relatively "small" house and I LOVE IT!!! I would never get bigger...I am content and contentment is a wonderful thing!

You had a renovation. Our church got a mobile building for a food pantry for the church. It was painted and looked new. I like the Tea with Jesus!

We raised two wonderful kids in 600 square feet. It kept us close. I worry a lot as we just moved across country and bought a 900 sq ft home to retire in, unfortunately with mortgage. I home if the bottom ever falls out for us as it did for you, we are lucky enough to find something so small, cozy and livable.

Watched several of your videos tonight. Blessings to you. We are downsizing and find that "things" do not mean much to us anymore in our mid 40's. What state do you live in? I saw the snowstorms in the last video.

My husband and I use to live in an 1,800 sqft. house and then moved into an older (renovated) double wide trailer that is half the size of our old place. There's the two of us, 2 dogs, a cat and 2 birds. I was so worried that downsizing so much would make me feel cramped but after going through everything we owned and getting rid of a lot of stuff I've found that we have more than enough space for all of us (one of our dogs is a 90 lb. German Shepherd). If we didn't have all the animals I'm sure we could easily live in a smaller space, but I just love my fur babies too much to ever give them up. :)

I saw a person on here who did a side door shipping container, that was gorgeous inside, I think it was living big in a tiny house channel, what I fought was good about it was the strength of it and the ability to easily move to anywhere in the world, it was so beautifully done.

inspiring!! re summer house, I think all humans are overcoming many things around us including seasons; so, why not try to overcome winter by converting yours into 4 seasons, which will be a major triumph for you and us too. you can build new columns at 4 corners ( little higher) plus extra 2 to support the structure. put up extra roof on top of them to enable you not to hear any more of missiles of rain. a thought.

Maybe weatherize the sunroom. Put in a separate heater, and air conditioner. You would be able to use it all year, except for extreme cold or hot weather.

Tiny house living is a process. I think a very good one. We do not need as much as we have been taught. It is so nice to see you both working harmoniously in the process.

Yes, insulating the sun room just means you have to pay to heat or cool it. But you could build a crib around it and insulate the ceiling from above. Small and simple is great. I know. I don't have to clean 3 bathrooms every day anymore. Happy days.
