Oh Elizabeth, you are so blessed to be able to gather with your family! I have a friend who's children have moved out of the country or other states and she has not seen her kids or grands for years now. I am so happy for you. Thank you for sharing your perspective on tiny house living, it is refreshing and encouraging.

We went thru something similar in the crash of 1986, thankfully, we didn't lose our home when my husband was out of work for 9 months, but we sold it, downsized drastically and learned a valuable lesson, to not live within our means, but below our means. We had each other, and worked to make it work. What I love about your story is you didn't give up, you regrouped and made a way with the Lord's help. Very inspiring.

You both are amazing. I can relate to what you are saying. My hubby and I are in our mid 60s and we, like you, lost our home, our business (that was our only income source) and my Mom all within a few months in 2008. We learned so much about ourselves and that experience is never far from my mind when making choices on buying anything. We drive a car we bought 13 years ago and couldn't be happier without a car payment. I wish we would have an area like you found for your home and admire how Bill was able to do the renovations to make it your own. God is so good. God bless, Linda

+Sarah Alexander Thank you. It's words of encouragement like this that keep us going with making videos. We are learning (and making mistakes) one step at a time, and it's gratifying to know that our experiences are helping others. And we wouldn't be CONTENT with where we are without Jesus in our lives. If we can share just a little bit of that truth, we have accomplished our goal.

I appreciate this video, thank you both for sharing! It's one thing to know about the challenges, but what makes me resolved to face them, now at 28 years old, is hearing about it from people who are actually facing them. You are so helpful, I never thought it was beneficial not to collect or decorate as much as my other girlfriends. It almost feels like i'm not a woman if I don't do those things. After living in a studio for 2 years near my office, I don't have anything up on my walls, and I just have a bed, table, and sideboard for furniture. I'm content the way I am, but now I actually feel good about the way I am. Thank you, this helps me resolve investing in a tiny house.

When I was growing up our family of 5 lived in a camper much smaller than yours with no bathroom (out house only) and we got our water by bringing in buckets from the hand pump. When I was 13 my dad finally had enough money to by a shell for a house. Today, I live in a beautiful house because my husband ran a successful business till we retired. But I told him... if we would somehow lose everything tomorrow, I would be ok, because I know how to live with very little and still be content....

When you said that you can enjoy something but that you don't have to own it, that really spoke to me. I'm learning to just say that to myself and I find that I enjoy things even better now. I don't want anything extra to dust in my home. :-)

I think the most amazing thing about the two of you do you have taken a very difficult and I'm sure heart-wrenching situation and turned it into a lifestyle that you really seem to love! You're still together and you seem to really be supporting each other and everything that you're doing. I imagine many couples that have gone through what you have probably wouldn't still be together, and if they are they probably aren't very happy. I know this was done 7 years ago, so obviously you're still on the same path loving each other and loving God

+Alphonso Thanks for that encouragement. I've seen and heard several discussionS by You Tubers about how long a video should be. It seems to be a consensus that they should be shorter or you will lose the viewer because of short attention spans. But when I watch a video, I want CONTENT and INFORMATION. To me, if a video is too short, it doesn't give me either one of those things. And I find that very frustrating,. Overviews have their place, but I want DETAILS. So that's what we try to deliver. And that just takes TIME.

My in-laws had a tiny house, though there were two small bedrooms. Everyone loved to come to the ranch. Sometimes we sat on the beds, or stood and ate our meal. The Lord often gave us nice enough weather for all the kids to play outside. But I never heard a complaint. They came for Easter and thanksgiving! There was 30 to 40 people. Some of us adults would get together for prayer after the dishes were done and we saw miracles happen. Such a precious time and memories!

A very informative and honest story of your love of the simple life...no stress or worries over debt and you certainly take everything in your stride each day dealing with your life together. Compromise is a big thing in a relationship and you two seem to be coping very well with that part... Both of you have come through all those obstacles from 2008 and seem so happy and contented which is so lovely in this day and age. Too many people have far too much and like you said, no way should you keep stuff you don't need it.... I myself live in a Big house share. 5 people have their own private room and we share facilities... We all get on well and respect each other's privacy there is a lounge room with TV and kitchen with all that is needed to cook meals etc... 2 showers, One includes a toilet with handwashing sink etc also another toilet downstairs on the ground floor where my room is. I have lived in my room here in Plymouth, Devon .. U.K. for nearly 4 years since my divorce. I have gone through lots of clothes, and many other possessions and have let them all go ...as you say...if not using or needed, get rid... God bless you both ...you are an inspiration....Xxxx

We had our little retirement home leased out.it’s a few houses down from my daughter and grandson...it was paid for...we had no bills except for our larger house that we still have a mortgage on...and we planned to downsize when my husband retired..we were on our way and then hurricane Harvey happened...we had never flooded in our neighborhood...not in a flood zone...but we flooded...had to get an SBA loan and now have mortgages on both houses...just goes to show that your plans and effort aren’t always guaranteed with good results...I just pray that we will be ok financially for the rest of our lives..maybe 20 years max...the houses in this area had appreciated before the storm...maybe they will comeback...all the neighborhood has worked hard to get our houses back in shape....helping each other as well...so we may keep the big house, just as an investment..and lease it out..real estate is still the safest ...imo. Even with this bad storm..I don’t regret having these houses...rent has skyrocketed in the Houston area since the flood...so many motels don’t even have rooms available because they are filled with Hurricane Harvey people...if need be..our grown kids and grandkids could move in w us...it would be tight but it’s doable a you never know when it might be the only answer..as in a catastrophe or natural disaster....still..I think I’d love to live in a motor home full time and travel around ...that would be so much fun...the older I get the less important it is to have lots of things...clothes, jewelry. Etc. etc...the only thing I’ve had a hard time letting go of is dishes..I love vintage dishes but I do want to get rid of a large percentage of our “stuff”

Thank you for this - the discussion of the downsizing was very honest and it is nice to know there are others in this life who have some "stuff" that is sentimental enough just to keep - since i know if i actually take this step that will be a struggle for me. (The books, the scrapbooks...)

It's a joy to see the love you have for one another in all your videos. I learned a lot from this one and I think many of us could benefit maybe not from official "tiny houses" but maybe something in between the mansions we feel compelled to own and a tiny house. How about a new category of houses called semi-tiny where you've got maybe 400-800 square feet. I live in a small cape that's around 1100 sq ft and for awhile I kept thinking I should move up to something larger but now I"m rethinking that.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree8 жыл бұрын
I agree. Technically, a tiny house is anything under 400 sq ft (because building codes don't apply), but anyone can benefit from any kind of downsizing. A 700 sq ft two bedroom is a considerable downsize for someone who moves out of a 2500 sq ft home. There are many benefits to downsizing.

my huge comment just got deleted. I am thankful for you and i was just thinking why the Lord doesn't provide me with people like you :).....now to make the story short, i too have an rv. i bought some land at the beach and i was able to install water. they tell me that if i build something small 10x10 they will give me electricity. i want to build the sun room you have so that my dad can live there while i occupy the rv. this is all part time bc we live in the city. but eventually if i want i can move there. i want to install a regular door bc i simply don't like the one i have, although it is in excellent shape, and i wan to do the gutter thing, i bought the little spout thingies and one got blown with the wind. i think gutter looks better. i think your renovation looks fantastic, you did an excellent job and you have mastered living simply. which is the way the Lord wants us to do..and when you think about it when we die we don't get to take none of the junk we have accumulated, which is rubbish like St. Paul says. Excellent job. i will finish the video to see if i can get more ideas...

I wish I could tell you this in person because thanks to you both I have made a big change in my life. You both have touched my heart. Everyday I find myself thinking about the way you live, the words you’ve spoken. My faith has increased and I find myself wanting to live the day being the best person I can be and I look at you Elizabeth and I want to follow your example. I’m blessed with a wonderful husband that loves me more than life itself. I’ve certainly have had and still have my trials. Two and a half years ago I was suddenly struck with illness. Gillain Barre. It left me paralyzed for a time. Over these last two years I found myself often depressed and sad. I be always known God has a plan for me and that I am experiencing this for a reason. I’m now on crutches. I’m so thankful for that. It’s been a long hard struggle and somewhere along the way it became harder and harder to press forward. But God has touched my heart through the two of you. I’ve watched all of your videos and I’ve started to read scriptures again. I’m told that somewhere in time I should make a nearly complete recovery. But recovery is slow. And often as I struggle to find balance even with the crutches I get discouraged. Elizabeth you have helped me to remember to put God first and to keep my faith in him. You are an example of what a woman of God should be. How can I ever thank you for what you’ve done. I worry that you may not read this comment. It’s that important for me to thank you. I pray you will get this message.

I love what Elizabeth said about looking at old houses. I love old houses with big porches too. My folks lived in one when I was born. When I was about 20, a lady said to me. "When we get to heaven, we'll have homes that make these look like hovels." I've said that a thousand times in the last 30-odd years since then. I have the impression that Jesus knows exactly what he should prepare for me. And if I've got the wrong understanding of what heaven will be like, it will only be better than what I can imagine.
