Not due to trans ppl, we've had it for as long as I can remember, and Im 51. Its just more practical. I'm from Denmark. I think American basic education has some serious shortcomings, so many people are not equipped to be critical of information, sources, facts, science, etc -. All Americans can shout "the Constitution", but many people do not understand the meaning and do not understand the connection between politicians and the welfare society many people expect. In Denmark, most people have a basic understanding that everyone must contribute in order for everyone to have access to welfare. There is a basic sense of some kind of community. In the US, it seems as if many only focus on themselves and their own happiness or lack thereof. But perhaps I am wrong😊.

But we do have celebrity and entertainment culture that is so disproportionately centered in our societal discourse that our attention span for the truth has just been eroded to a degree which really hasn't existed before. The effects are felt more acutely now due to misinformation spreading through the largest and most successful media platforms which have zero professional or ethical standards (I.e. The phrase "bleeding heart liberal" is real. I want Democrats to win, but mostly I want people in this country to be taken care of. It's why I support big government--we are a shared society, I think we should take care of our fellow citizens. Private corporations prey on the vulnerable and care about profit over anything else, which is why we need regulations and government institutions to protect the citizens of this country. So, just saying "screw everything, let them suffer" is just totally antithetical to my whole view on politics. But it is also why Democrats are at a huge disadvantage, which I get is a problem--if we don't win elections, we can't help people. It's tricky. Regarding the vaccines, I 100% blame Trump for this anti-vax sentiment, and I'll never forgive him for it. It was a problem when it was just crunchy liberals who spread false rumors about the MMR causing autism, and now because of Trumpism, it has proliferated throughout the country. Pockets of measles and whooping cough broke out in those crunchy areas where herd immunity decreased two decades ago. Now we are in danger of seeing that all over. And not only do I not want your unvaccinated kid to get sick, I don't want my vaccinated kid to get sick either. Part of the efficacy of vaccines is that when vaccines get diseases under control, there are fewer instances of disease to infect other people. It impacts everyone. Ugh, I'm spiraling.

The Netherlands stopped adding fluoride to drinking water in 1976. They do add iodine to table salt and bread, but not fluoride. As long as people use toothpaste and/or mouth wash containing fluor they are fine. Most toothpaste here contains fluoride. But if you can buy fluoride free toothpaste if you want to. The anti-vax stance is really stupid though. It is such a great win for humanity against deathly diseases. People don't know that we almost completely destroyed smallpox worldwide for example. He should have been at a factory opening every two weeks and featured workers who would day how glad they were to have a Biden-provided job. The fact that he failed to do this doesn't mean that the strategy itself was wrong - the follow-though was extremely poor.

I think western governments must tatke Russian and Chinese information warfare seriously and come up with a good counter to it. The US Justice Dept. recently arrested and charged a proxie company for accepting huge amounts of money from Russia and paid several popular US influeners millions to spread their propaganda. Tim Poole, and Dave Ruben claim they were victims. However, if you watch them "read" from an unbelievably vile anti-Ukraine script you have to wonder.....they are lying or are incredibly stupid, or both. They made millions of dollars and did so willingly. I am sure there are many others who have not been caught. All Western nations are under a highly sophisticated attacks....stirring hatred, division, and anti-government feelings. They are leveraging social friction points.

MD here. One point about JVL's comment that anti-vax behavior only affects the anti-vaxxers...this is not true. Vaccine efficacy is dependent on herd immunity and low disease prevalence in the community. Since vaccines are never 100% effective, you will start to see breakthrough cases in vaccinated people once the system becomes leakier with decreased vaccine uptake. Think of it as a missile defense system. If it's 99.9% effective and there's only one missile coming in, chances are very good it gets shot down. If there are 1000 missiles coming in, one of them is going to get through. If there are 100,000 missiles coming in...good luck to us all. There are lots of good models out there that show it only takes a relatively small further decrease in vaccination rates for contagious diseases like measles for the community prevalence to increase fairly dramatically.

We talk so much about what voters were looking for and one of those things was authenticity. I saw so much commentary about how Harris only spoke in talking points. And, yes, online isn't real life. But Democrats need to get better at being real people. Standing up for a trans person in your workplace and saying something like "I don't know how you all use the bathroom, but I close the door to my stall and then don't care who else is in there; unless they're being investigated by the Ethics Committee for sex crimes" would be a person standing up for someone they know. That's relatable. Not saying anything when someone attacks a person you work with because they are trans is not relatable to most people, it's being a jerk. You don't need to then get into arguments about federal funding for surgeries for prisoners. If you wanted to be nice, you could even leave off the Ethics Committee comment, although I am not sure I could help myself.
