Should You Abandon Social Media?

Did I make a video called "is twitter redeemable" last month? Yes I did. Do I think about Twitter a lot? Yes. Too much? Probably.
Ultimately, the moments when I feel like I can't control myself on social media are the ones when I most shouldn't be using social media. Right now, I feel relatively in control. Whenever I'm not able to control myself, I need to not be there.
I also try not to communicate with anyone else in my life in moments when I am not in control. It seems like a fairly basic rule, and yet often people seem to prefer messages from those who are out of control, or from those who cause others to lose control. Seems bad!

I admire your ability to not fall into the scream-bait that Twitter is full of. It is harder for me to do the same, not just to avoid engaging with it, but to avoid being emotionally impacted by it. I personally do not want to risk my mental health by willfully spending time on a platform that requires hard work to engage with healthily. Life is better for me if I simply don't use it, and I assume many others feel the same.

I totally understand this mentality of just not using it to avoid this type of negative engagement. I don't use Twitter pretty much ever, but, as far as a similar-ish social media goes, Reddit, which I DO frequent, I tend to just unfollow the subreddits that end up making me feel negative. I don't know how valid that is for Twitter, since perhaps your friends or people you are a fan of often DON'T do that, thereby bringing them into your feed anyway, and you don't want to unfollow them, but it is perhaps something to consider? Again, not a Twitter guy, so I don't know how valid it is, but it's much easier to hit the Unfollow button than it is to resist writing a mini essay on why people who dunk Oreos in water are wrong on all levels... though perhaps that's worth the effort tbh...

I feel the same. I recently deleted Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter because they were not only a distraction for me, but also not allowing me to be my authentic self. I was always trying to come up with something funny to say on Twitter, or take the best picture I can while on vacation for Instagram. Without it all, I feel much more connected with myself and the people around me.

I think it's going to be a lot like alcohol. Should we ban it? No, that doesn't work, we tried it. Are we as a culture going to handle it poorly? Yep, gonna be a whole lot of people who have unhealthy relationships with it. All we can do is be mindful of our own use, and encourage other people to be mindful of theirs - I think we need to normalize individuals abstaining from things that make them unhappy, whether that's sobriety or moderation or deleting your facebook. I think you nailed it with this line - “to use social media like how we wish others would use social media.” The internet literally handed a mega phone to everyone (some louder than others) and we’re still at the gimmick stage where we’ll use it to say whatever we’re feeling. I think as we mature - we may come to the realization of its power and hopefully use it for good or algorithms will get so good - that ideally the companies that control the volume on the megaphones will ideally take some accountability and spread good messages. Twitter will never voluntarily take all the steps needed to fix how broken Twitter is, because the mechanism that enables extremists and outside influences to bend Twitter to their uses is the same mechanism that makes Twitter more money, and there's no serious competition to draw away their users. This is indeed the best line, and the reason for that is simple - because it is the golden rule, basically. Just because interacting in this blast broadcast way is new does not mean we are not humans, who have been operating in similar ways for a very long time. What Hank has done here is bring an age old lesson into a new format. We do, actually, know what to do and how to be. The newness of the environment of social media confuses us into thinking that we don’t know. Put your heart and your imagination and your empathy first and you will very rarely screw it up. And full disclosure I say this as a person who did screw it up earlier this very week, oops. But we will get there. I believe in us!

The question then is whether Twitter (and social media in general is) “The Internet”. Because in my head they’re two different things and gut reaction, I’d be sorry if I woke up and The Internet disappeared, but I can’t same the same if I woke up and Twitter disappeared. Also (and this is not a criticism) but something interesting to note is that a lot of the conversation of “social media can be good” is by and from people who are generally “good” at social media and who have to use social media as a part of their livelihood, whereas I think it might be different for those “bad” at social media (either via follower count or interaction level or just general understanding of the platform and why you’re on it)

Exactly. It's a false argument to say that the only way to get rid of a (not so small) bad part of the internet is to remove ALL of it. It's the same argument made against any form of gun control:. gun control == complete ban omg! We wouldnt ban making and exporting cars and other vehicules just because some vehicules, let's say tanks and APC, can be used to wage war or other political maneuvers.

So in that sense, Twitter is the best social media + it's why I exclusively use twitter, but yeah the main app itself is pretty terrible. I'm not sure why people use the main app. Also

My frustration or problem with Twitter is that the medium is not in any way neutral. Graham's tweet will get more traction because it draws more engagement which makes Twitter more money. Using a digital space that results in the most outlandish takes being given the most attention feels like a generally bad space to cultivate meaningful communication and engagement.

+1 There are other spaces online that encourage more positive discussion on the whole; I think Twitter is one of the worst big platforms. The character limit (removes nuance), the combination of real names/celebrities and anonymity, and like you say, how the algorithm works.

It is more than social media (the marketing world taking over the web), and it is more than just websites (a dominant user-facing protocol). He seems to make this mistake a lot when discussing these topics, and in a way I can't blame him but I wish he didn't because it condenses the nuance necessary to talk about these things in a truly constructive way.

Nearly all of it is overgrazed to some degree and the cows destroy sagebrush and undergrowth, not to mention they compete with native animals for browse and water. Cows in America are still quite bad for the environment-- but yes, things are much worse in the third world.

When I was in high school, my hometown had a bad hurricane and we lost the ability to use the internet for about a week (or even text/call for that matter). It led to a lot more in person conversations and time spent away from screens and was actually quite a lovely week (despite the obvious hurricane problems). When social media is bad, the primary cause are the curation mechanisms involved (not the fact that anyone can upload content). Who decides what kind of content you see and why do they pick that? Decentralize or fundamentally change that content curation and I think social media would be in a much better place.

Love this perspective, the idea that we can't change something by abandoning it really hit home for me since over the years I've disengaged from almost all social media. What I find hard is reading inflammatory content with a healthy amount of emotional distance. I'm not necessarily tempted to engage with something but will walk around for the rest of the day with a pit in my stomach thinking about the gross tweet I saw. Social media boundaries are hard!

I just finished the Carl books and loved every minute of it, well, almost every minute of it. 🙂 I got really wrapped up with the characters that I'd get sad when something bad happened to one of them and get mad when one of them did something stupid. I also related it back to our current situation to some degree and it scared me a bit. I think that's what a novel is supposed to do to a person. Thank you!

Social media didn't create a diversity of opinions and alternative facts, it merely *exposed* it. The difference now is that we're suddenly being confronted with competing ideologies, and yeah, a lot of them are biased, stupid, lack nuance, or are outright lies. In a world with two billion English speakers, why would we expect them all to share the same world-view? IMO, people just need to exercise the mute button and accept the inevitability that other people are going to be wrong sometimes. And that *you* will be wrong sometimes. Or that there is no objective wrong, sometimes. It's becoming an ever smaller world, and there are progressively more of us. Either we learn to accept other people's right to live their own values without our meddling, or it's time to sharpen our guillotines.

I think it's difficult to make the argument that it didn't amplify misinformation (and hate) as well as simply exposing it. It's vastly easier to be connected to other people who'll fuel whatever priors you happen to have about some conspiracy or element of bigotry on Twitter than it is in person in a community. I'd add that there's a TON of nuance in terms of what makes for a reasonable response to this between "Accept it" and "Kill them".

Social media has given the far left as much of a platform as the far right, and it is indisputable that the far left has enjoyed far more success in exploiting their new avenue of communication. That's largely due to innate virtue of their ideas, or more accurately, the lack of virtue of most far-right rhetoric. Yes, various ideologues can now communicate with each other, but there's zero evidence that they're changing minds or recruiting new people. Belief perseverance and the backfire effect ensure that while you'll make a lot noise, you won't actually convince anyone of anything. Which is why you're going to have to learn to live with other people's opinions. There are no "reasonable" responses. There is only coercion, or the ignore button. And if you think that coercing away's people's right to free expression won't lead to violence, go check out countries where they incarcerate journalists, and get back to me.

Yesterday I went into a book store and sat down to flip through the first couple of pages of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. I didn't end up leaving that chair until I was about 150 pages in. When there store closed I bought the book, and had finished it by the time I went to bed. Its one of the first novels I've read for pleasure since graduating college, and I immensely enjoyed it :) thank you for such a fun and thought provoking way to spend my day off! I recently opened a Twitter account again and I'm dreading this exact same thing every time I open the app. It's made to push you to engage in the most outrageous thing. And I barely interact or tweet because of fear of being replied to in a negative way. Yours is a really good strategy that I think I'll try to implement more.

I feel like I'm one of the few people who has always had an enjoyable Twitter experience. I only follow wholesome accounts like the Vlogbrothers, I only interact with wholesome content and try to put out wholesome content myself and that way of using twitter has always been really fun and might I say - wholesome. It's possible y'all. Unfollow the toxic people and try to be less toxic yourself and it suddenly becomes a rather nice platform. Just stay in that happy corner and you'll be fine (and beware the trending hashtags).

this sounds good in theory. but on the individual level, engaging meaningfully with social media is an unending uphill battle against constantly improving supercomputers. not everyone has the privilege, attention span or strength to always (or even sometimes) have the upper hand in that battle. i'm not convinced that anyone can really do it sustainably. i've mostly made the choice to get off because i'd prefer to do something else with the time i'd otherwise spend fighting the algorithms determined to spiral my mental health

I agree 100%. Normally I stay pretty quiet and don't comment much on social media. Whenever I come across something that upsets me. My emotions take over and I want to respond in a way that I will probably regret later. I think yelling and screaming at people you disagree with only makes things worse. People tend to double down on their positions when confronted. On the other hand. I do think there are justified times to be upset at something. When to be upset and when to let something go can be hard to determine. It's also hard to tell when people legitimately hold a position. And others who are just being trolls. In any case. I think we should all try and be the good we want to see in the world. Thanks for everything you do Hank. And thanks for keeping me grounded.

Cows are peaceful animals that deserve to be treated kindly. The cows I've met like head rubs and ear scratches. They shouldn't not exist and shouldn't be blamed for climate change. I agree with you about social media, though.

I think the point is that currently existing cows are in a bit of a living hell, and there's no real way for there to be as many as there are and them all be treated kindly, so it would be better for the cows to not be there at all rather than suffer.

It's more humanity's fault than individual cows. The mass, industrialized farming of cows is what causes their part in climate change. Not to slight cows, cows are great, but as it is they can't be treated and farmed how they are without both being unhappy individually and contributing to climate change.

Cows raised on good native prairie land still produce methane, but that farm sequesters more carbon than those animals put out. So cows can help help with climate change when theyre preserving ecosystems rather than turning them to conventional farmland. And compared to most animsls, they live pretty good lives on pastures, and even in big feedlots, where they spend their last year, the most efficient way to finish them for weight, and eventually process them, is often the most stress-free way. It's not ideal but it's not necessarily cruel.

I’m a bookseller and one of my favorite things is talking to people about your books! I still remember when A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor first came out and I saw a very old man buying it and I said “oh my god I love that book!” And he said “yes!! I've been hired to do some part-time social media for a small (and rather disorganized) company that does not share my values. I'm doing my best with it, but it's more about making some income from home until I find something different. I've done a decent amount of research for them about how to run their social media, and so much of that marketing stuff is just so distasteful for me. Marketing specialists are always trying to boost numbers, and are so clearly just titillating the algorithm to get more people "hooked" on their stuff. I always appreciate coming back around to folks like you, because of the genuine human understanding of what social media is and why it matters. Love you, hank, and I respect your work, but... "[hamburgers] are pretty much bad for everyone involved" and "[not having cows anymore [...] would probably be for the best" are really poor choices of words. Medically speaking, eating hamburgers once or twice a day is probably too much, and north americans should probably as a whole be eating fewer of them. But beef is a really good, nutrient rich source of protein, and a hamburger is a really good sandwich for most people involved. Bread and beef are not unhealthy unless there's just way too much of them in your (probably overly caloric) diet. Environmentally, the main problem you might point to is beef's contribution to climate change, which is highly dependant on how and where they're raised. Cutting down rainforests to turn them to pasture is probably literally crazy from a global perspective. But raising beef on marginal land that would be unnecessarily and inefficiently turned to other agriculture would be worse. Cattle pastures are often a really good way to preserver native species, and maintain a healthy biodiversity. Especially up here in the northern grasslands, where farming would otherwise threaten local ecosystems even more than they already are. To feed the world and save the planet, we need to be making the best use out of each acre of land, whether its preserved or farmed or something in between. Ethically, the case for avoiding meat is sound, and a value judgement that is unimpeachable, just not necessarily shared by all. I happen to love bacon, but I avoid most pork products because they're really smart animals who are (often, not always) raised in conditions that I find unfortunate if not cruel. I'm more comfortable with chicken, but still ambiguous, maybe because its a less relateable intelligence. Beef cattle are pretty smart, pretty playful, and live pretty cruelty-free lives by comparison. They have bad days, as do we all, but are probably on balance happier to live than most animals we eat. As with so many things, like the internet, it's not about what you do always as how you do it, and we should always be looking for better ways of doing the things we love. Social media can be made to reduce cruelty, as can hamburger production. For everyone involved.

I especially agree with your comment on native species preservation in the northern grasslands of North America. It's has the second highest biodiversity, but it is more threatened than the rainforest, as it is tilled up for monoculture agriculture throughout the continent. Especially as there are more inputs and machinery that make it easier to do so. The grasslands are the home of the bison, which are being reintroduced in some places. Those bison are also ruminants, and give off about the same amount of methane emissions as cattle. But with proper grazing, the grasslands are rejuvenated. I think it's important to note that The Internet != Twitter. Although the Internet isn't like a cow I would argue that Twitter is like a cow. We can build platforms that are better designed for productive Many To Many communication.

In this video, you conflate the internet with social media, and social media with twitter. This is a problem because almost no one is arguing that we should end the internet, or that we should end all social communication on the internet. The argument that I and many other people make is a much more narrow one about specific platforms with specific structures, and by conflating the whole internet or all social interaction on the internet with twitter, you fail to adequately engage with the arguments that you seem to be trying to respond to.
