We stayed on Makaha beach for a month and never experienced any issues with the locals. People at the grocery stores offered to help me load my groceries, easily interacted with my kids, and were very polite. Two years later, we stayed near Kailua and the second day there we were told that we were not welcomed, not by a native, but by a “transplant “. I hate to hear such a large number of people categorized as unfriendly. We never forget that we are guests and try to behave accordingly.

I brought my 10 year old son to a Waianae beach. Just him and I. We were relaxing not bothered by anyone when all of a sudden a family brought us plates of food and told us to come join them. I was kind of taken by surprise. I was speaking in Spanish to my son and I assume the family overheard us and wanted to learn some some spanish. They were super interested to know what Mexico is like and I can say we made some really cool friends that day. Everyone was super kind and my son left Hawaii with a great memory.

Thank you for posting this comment...I grew up there and some of the kindest most loving families are from there and I've lived in several other States on the Mainland...the main thing like any other indigenous socio-economically challenged area is to respect the area and the people!!! There is along history to what our Native Population has been thru as you may know and our memory is quite "long." Mahalo Nui and take good care!!! Aloha.

I spent a week in Makaha - this was about 6 years ago - we had a great time. No trouble at all. But then, there's really not much to do out there, which is why we stayed there in the first place. There's not a lot of opportunity to really interact with other people because we were either hiking or in the ocean or resting at the place we rented.

I went to Waianae elementary until 6 th grade. Then moved to Guam for a year. We really missed Hawaii. Living in San Diego now but still visit the islands.

I stayed at a hostel in Makaha a couple blocks from the beach. The proprietor picked me up from the airport in a van with the bay windows in the back removed. He told me he just left it that way to avoid people breaking the windows. He also told me he could leave anything he wanted in the van because the crooks assumed there was nothing in it. He also told me if your car was seen as a rental car it would be broken into. I stayed for 2 weeks and had zero problems with the locals. He hooked me up with a couple locals happy to drive me around the are to run errands and show me the local scene.

Stayed in Waianae. There was a roughly 2 mile section of beach that had semi permanent tents ⛺️. I enjoyed that part of the island. 😊

I live in Makaha. Some great beaches but not a great place for tourists as very few places to eat other than fast food.

I go kayak fishing in Makaha from 3:30 am almost every week...Pretty sketchy looking area but I haven't had any problems there. No one has hassled me or broken into my car.

The paradise is a paradise. Makaha is the home of the best beaches ever. Homeless is an issue all over the world. So be mindful of ur surroundings. Common sense. Our home of Makaha is a place for tuff hearted and the ones who seeks hidden beauty within the valleys from nanakuli to kaena point.

A long time ago, the royalists invited my family to Oahu, and even then, the local hawaiian kids would call me "Haole" when I went to surf Makaha. The best waves on Oahu are on the west side and the indigenous people do not want exploiters to ruin their beautiful home.

As a local, i tell others if you have to go to Waianae make sure you have a full tank of gas and an empty bladder. People have been MURDERED at the Nanakuli McDonalds.

Lately it isn't unless you are with a local you fine. Homeless and chronic tend to leave locals alone. Unless it's mainland homeless and chronic which we have a lot now because the mainland be dumping their homeless and criminals here too.

Makakilo grown 40+years. There's shitty people sprinkled all over the place. Newcomers just have to be safe, respectful, and use common sense. I stick to them rules wherever I go, in the islands or not.🫵🏽🙏🏽🤙🏽
