Who is Scott?
I've been in sports performance, coaching and testing for over 30 years. Yep, before the internet! My journey has involved some wonderful adventures as both a performer and a coach. As a sports scientist I have never stood still and always pushed boundaries and limits. The rewards of this have seen me work with multiple national champions and internationalists. My intense curiosity though for fitness and performance gains has made huge impacts on the life’s of what folks may call - the everyday athlete. I aim to use KZbin to share my knowledge of how to both improve your physical fitness and your mindset. How you train harder or even train less to make more progress! I will share with you how you can improve your mindset and apply simple daily routines to check your progress. I want to also use the channel to have fun! So, although I can be a geek for science at times, my ENFP personality does mean you need to expect the unexpected at times. 😂

Half way through and loving this. Best results I've ever gotten have been after months of mostly Z2 riding and 2 "overreach" workouts per week and even sometimes just 1 if I felt that I was overloaded that week (external stress etc). After years of building up to a good fitness only to burn out shortly after, it was so refreshing to actually enjoying cycling while performing at my best

Im training z2 just about every training day -3 or 4 days a week. 40 to 50 miles each training session. The only time I’m not really doing zone two is when I’m on my weekly group ride, where I let all hell breaks loose. After about a year of doing predominantly zone two I can easily keep up with any particular rider in the group., I am 61 years old and probably in the best aerobic shape I’ve ever been in. I’m pretty sure doing a year of predominantly zone two for nearly every session is probably the main reason I am in such a good shape right now and the strongest I’ve ever been on the bike.

Love the idea of working base around the year if one's goal is health and fitness... No need to complicate much with periodization unless one intends to compete.

I was mashing up Kirkstone Pass a couple of days ago, nose pressed to the bars, ostensibly chasing a new, improved ftp. By the time I had descended, got back and hit the shower I was buzzing. I could say that I train to race as well as I can but the truth is that I do it because it makes me feel good.

I love your content. I'm a 49 year old female cyclists and I bike to be fit and healthy as I age. I love testing my ability and seeing what I can do just for the joy of it. My husband and rode 62 miles last year from brecon to Cardiff and this year out goal is Cardiff to Swindon... we ride mountain bikes and don't care what we look like😂

Having seriously overtrained last year, I've done mostly Zone 2 training this year. So much more manageable and easier on the body.

Exactly this 👍. If I’ve taken one thing from Scott (and I’ve taken many of course) it’s all about recovery. Game changer.

Hi Coach! I like you constant reminders that health is more important than the fitness. As I am not competitive cyclist, I have made my choice to train for building "perma-fitness" than chasing peaks for some competitions I may occasionally participate. So I chose the "HAPPY" drink. Cheers!

Hi Coach, Love my riding, Crits, Track Sprint, Endurance, TT, Gravel, MTB Push up, Freewheel Down, 4x. My go to tools to ride zone 2 is an eBike, so many purist out there take the michael, but as a training tool, it easy to ride happy and a joy to keep it zone 2. FTP was 180w after that "nasty bug" last test back up to 289w target 300w+ for raid alpean. Great channel - Living Long and in Zone 2.

Problem is that Zwift, SystemX and all other platforms and systems I have tried always recommend a lot of Zone 3-4-5 every week. Guess that’s more “fun”, but coming from cross country skiing in the 80-90ies we did a lot of zone 1-2 and only once a week any higher. Are TrainerRoad just as bad? What would you recommend? The pro of these systems are that I’m really good at following the plans. So I like plans, but the “professional” plans on Zwift and such are always leading to burnout in a couple of weeks. Guess they’re made for young people not a guy in their 50ies. My goal is to loose weight so I can follow my budddies on climbs and also health and enjoy cycling more being able to ride a small climb in zone 2 😂.

Those plans are made for people with limited time and relatively low levels of fitness whereby doing those plans will yield quick, noticeable results; unfortunately, quick and noticeable tend to lead to burnout and overtraining, which is exactly why pro athletes don't do stuff that hard (instead, they do A TON of Zone 2). Zwift is notorious for this with their plans; the workouts are fun, but the workouts are ALL OVER the place with what zones they target; a good workout targets a particular zone, not *all of them.* TrainerRoad is a little better in that regard AND at least pretends to add in easy stuff around the hard stuff; IMO, TR is good for race prep the last few weeks of a race block; outside of that, you're probably better off sticking to zone 2 work with occasional tempo intervals and V02 work (timed right within a ride [toward the end]). If your goal is to lose weight, Zone 2 is where you want to be like 80-90% of the time. ;)

Hey Coach. Not related to this particular video, but it's regarding bfr training. Before I ask the question I'll tell you of my progress. I've been doing it for the last 3 months now along with breath hold training, and have seen an incredible boost in my sustainable power. I was previously only able to hold 240 watts for a 30 mile TT I do for myself, but on the last one I did i was able to average 270 watts for the entire 1 hour and 25 mins. And I was able to do 9 x 3 min vo2 max hill repeats at 350 watts with a much lower heart rate than my previous efforts at only 320 watts with less intervals. That's an incredible increase. AND, I did a 6 hour 120 mile TT this last Saturday averaging 220 watts and 19mph. My question is.....I'm having a recovery week off this week as I'm very fatigued. Would doing 2 or 3 short BFR rides at zone 2 hinder or help with recovery during this week? I don't plan on doing any other rides. Cheers. Love your channel BTW.

Hey, I was wondering is there a reason to do zone 3 tempo training. Or is it preferable to do zone 2 / zone 5 days only. Just trying to figure out where one of my training sets fits in or whether I should ditch it / replace it. And to be fair I am not an enduro type but my metrics are getting better on the tempo efforts, though that could be due to the increased zone 2 only rides.

Good point. Zone 3 has merits but not for all. Best in 2 and 5 tbh. If you do z2 correctly it goes up and you’ll soon be doing it higher than what you thought ever possible 👍

Been doing Z2 for 6 months however I’m finding difficult to know what to do for the other 20% of the week Z3,4,5 or 6 to keep upper Zone fitness.

You could try two things: - watch one of the "best intervals" videos on youtube - if in doubt, do an anaerobic lactate threshold session. They are pure gold and far less demanding than vo2 max work
