You could say the same thing about any pre/post non professional given treatment if the person is over training. Gua sha/muscle scraping is highly effective in treatment and prevention of injury- but if a untrained individual is using it as a bandaide in order to over stress their body with far too much training then yes negative consequences are highly likely. As they would be using any other recovery method as a bandaide. Its about education - been a massage therapist for over 25 years and ive had this conversation multiple times with my athlete/gym junkie clients. We talk about rest days, about over training and over treating. One very basic rule with gua sha is that you do not do it until the previous petechiae ( red marks) have disappeared.

I had muscle scraping done twice by a physical therapist. I was in pain constantly. My muscle was tightened probably for over a year and I finally got a physical therapy appointment. I thought it was a scam at first. After the exercises and the two sessions my muscle loosened up and the pain subsided exponentially. I haven't had it since 2017.

I disagree ... using this tool at home was the only way I could get blood flow to my knee joints. Granted, years of dance and physical activity combined with minimal stretching and foam rolling helped create my horrible knee circumstance, but these tools helped so much when it came to getting blood flow to the area. I discussed this with my PT as something could do at home and it has been a huge help in my recovery. I wish he would have mentioned something of that nature.

So could scraping be beneficial to tendons around elbow after an injury occurred months before. To help break up scar tissue in the area and increase circulation. Would you just scrape lightly around the area since it’s tiny fibers near the humorous?
@DonaldGaron9 ай бұрын
did you confirm there was a tear or degeneration or theres only adhesions? if its only adhesions, have at it (both muscles and tendons). If it was a muscle tear, then once you waited enough, you can do lots of adhesion release treatments as well. If it was a tendon tear, I'm not sure. Call them maybe.

Hey I’ve just qualified as a sports massage therapist. Could I use this gently on client’s necks? Does there have to be scar tissue present to justify using it or can it be used to help down fascia generally? Also, could a client have scar tissue in say their neck even if no obvious injury previously? Thanks!
@drchrisstepienclips Жыл бұрын
Yup, there could be adhesion even if there is no I jury previously, Adhesion is also Adhesion is caused when there is an injury , overload, trauma to a joint or muscles and causes chronic pain! when there is overload or trauma to a joint or muscles, we are actually training doctors and therapists, you can get a 7 day free trial at adhesionreleasemethods.com if interested!
@danehollis66303 жыл бұрын
You seem to only be looking at the effect on connective tissue. But from a acupuncturist perspective (gua sha) we are also affecting fluid movement within the tissues. These motions are focused on muscle bellies not joints. So I don’t know exactly how joints are being negatively affected by the technique. If someone is training 7 days a week it’s a big leap to blame the arthritis on gua sha. Do you have any studies to back that claim up?
@drchrisstepienclips3 жыл бұрын
If it works for the individual patient to get permanent relief, then you MUST be doing a good job! Generally we've seen some people get gua sha and keep going back for only temporary relief. That's our only point. If WE only get people temporary relief, then we aren't serving our patients.

What are your thoughts on Graston for ligament injuries in the neck? Usually Prolotherapy is used to induce a healing response in the ligament so that it can heal properly if was overstretched.
