i'm a 6 month old RD, yes the pay is subpar, and we may be overlooked at times but overall, I do not feel disappointment of my career choice. my main job is a clinical at a big hospital but i also teach a health class with the ymca. theres so much flexibility and opportunities for side gigs

do you work clinically at the hospital full time and do the health class part time?

Thank you for this video! Currently in school to be a registered dietitian, and this update video got me more motivated! Regardless of pay, I still adore dietetics and I want to help others with the science of nutrition

Great video. I recently took the RDN exam and missed it by 3 points. Im studying and plan to take it again next month. I concur with your feelings on the masters requirement. Making people pay even more to become an RDN will definitely reduce the number of people becoming RDNs but it may be many years before RDN pay increases. We also have to factor in that in some states, a nutritionist may be able to do what an RDN does aside from the obvious, many people see no distinction and there are health coach certs and nutrition certs etc. It can be tricky. I already paid so much into it that it'd be a waste but I definitely would not tell anyone to become an RDN today.

There's definitely a lot of work that our profession needs to do! One of my pet peeves is definitely all the "health coaches" or "nutritionists" out there with no real credential giving out nutrition advice (especially when it's not evidence based). Hopefully people become smarter and refrain from taking advice from these people!

I negotiated 80k with a MS degree and I do not work clinical or foodservice. I also charge an elevated rate for my contract job :). Times are changing, get out of clinical to find better pay!

hi, are you a nutritionist now ?From clinical to nutritionist? could we discuss about it ?)
@brianajones99558 ай бұрын
Currently considering majoring in dietetics. Are you a new grad which state are you in? in NY, having a masters is required to become a RDN, so I don't know if I could ever negotiate higher pay until I'm a seasoned dietitian.

Being a dietitian has been my dream but its been a rocky journey, I didnt do well in the undergrad sciences courses, I couldnt get into the undergrad, ended up taking a diet tech job and switching to a business degree but now, my labour was not in vain. I can actually enroll in the masters program. I just have to take 5 or 6 prerequisite and the courses I took in my undergrad is the prereq for those prereq courses. Yay!!

Going through six years of school for subpar pay isn't really attractive, kind of struggling to find a health career that doesn't require med school that pays decent. Food and nutrition is definitely my passion but PT looks cool as well. Do you have any experiences with classmates or other students that drop this major and go onto a different path?
@ireanybeany9 ай бұрын
I don't know anyone that changed majors in school, but I know several dietitians that have gone on to become PAs (physician assistant)

How old are you? Also I would like to focus on sports nutrition as I do not want to necessarily work in patient care.

does this video cover the Future Education Model (FEM) that only requires masters degree and 3 prepreqs for RD?
@coolkiday11 ай бұрын
i feel like the supply of dietitians (especially in my area) is already extremely low & adding the master's requirement is just going to make it worse tbh. i also feel like it's going to make it harder for POC to become RDs. in my office i'm the only POC out of 10 RDs & i honestly know very little in my personal life. i do work on the Surgical GI floor in the hospital with adults & i absolutely love it so i hope you will also 🤍
@diisis11 ай бұрын
I'm guessing POC means person of color? I'm an old man so im not hip to the lingo. May I ask why you think it would be more difficult for them?
@ireanybeany11 ай бұрын
It's definitely going to be a barrier for POC. I'm the only POC on my inpatient team of 20 dietitians but I don't feel like I necessarily count for diversity since I come from an upper middle class family as well. I also definitely would not have gone this route if my parents hadn't paid for my education (masters degrees are SOOO expensive!!!) and I think it would be extremely hard for me to stay as a dietitian if I wasn't living/splitting expenses with my much higher earning boyfriend (I'm aware of my extreme privilege). Also so far I'm loving GI! It's so much fun being part of the team and definitely feel valued

@@diisis because this country is founded on yt supremacy and systemically created to make everything harder for POC. If you really want the answer to this question you need to delve into the history of racism and how this country’s systems were developed to uphold the patriarchal yt supremacy and capitalism. A KZbin comment will not suffice to explain.
