Great video, and great tip on checking for transmission leak. We purchased a 2015 Limited 5/20. Shortly after noticed small ATF drip. Long story short Toyota replaced transmission under powertrain warranty. Was told there is an issue with the transmission housing casting. It may appear that transmission pump seal is bad, but is actually a defect in the housing. Replacing pump seal (very expensive due to labor involved) won’t fix. If not under warranty dealer charges $4200 for transmission and approx. 16 hours labor.

I finally ended up tearing out the power cylinders, threw them in the trash and converted it to a manual lift hatch using gas lift cylinders on A---* zon and the non-power cylinder brackets from a dealer. BTW there is a switch in the glove box to choose auto or manual lift which may help. I still needed new cylinders and decided to convert to manual only which are much more affordable as well. 👍 As far as the brakes, when it was time to replace the pads, I bought aftermarket drilled/slotted rotors and high-end ceramic pads.. The 2018 Rav4s are a little top heavy especially when cornering. The suspension is not that great. I recommend changing out the rug floor mats with the rubber bucket ones (e.g. Weathertech) especially in the trunk to prevent high voltage battery damage from accidental fluid spills.
@ejej69343 жыл бұрын
You're correct: The suspension is far from great. I loaded my 2017 RAV4 for a weeklong camping trip and installed a hitch-mounted bike rack to carry 2 bikes. The headlights ended up pointing so high in the air that almost every oncoming vehicle was flicking their high beams at me, thinking I had my highs on. I had to get the dealer to adjust my headlights as low as they can be adjusted, just so the headlights would be about where they should point when on low beam. The car I traded in for the Toyota was a Subaru Forester. I could load that car any way I wanted, including putting about 250 pounds of sand bags in the back in the winter, and it rode level and the headlights aimed normally.

Thanks for the excellent videos! The knowledge you're sharing is really helping me figure out whether a hybrid is for me. I'm wondering if there are any easy ways to protect the high-voltage battery in the rav4 (which you mentioned is located under the back seat) from liquid spills? Some sort of waterproof cover or lining? If I end up with a rav4 I'd be using it a lot as an "SUV RV", possibly even doing a light camper conversion. Carrying around water jugs, perhaps having some sort of a makeshift sink, eating in the back when the weather is bad, etc. would all increase the risk of spills!

I bought 2016 GXL turbo Diesel AWD RAV4 3 years ago at 140000 ks and is now 220000 ks. The one and only issue I had was the DPF. The car has a code that puts the car into 2wd safety mode when the filter needs regeneration. That is ok except driving the car in 2wd puts a strain on the transmission and you have drive the car very carefully to prevent a pronounced clunk in the transmission from 1st to 2nd gear. In fact it is better not to drive the car at all if possible until you get it to your mechanic to "burn' the filter. Better if the warning that the filter needs to be seen to without going into 2wd mode. Again that is a safety code issue. Apart from that the car is fabulous. The car is serviced every 10000ks using synthetic oil. It drives and feels like a new car, great front passenger seats, good fuel economy, smooth transmission, loves the open road and great for city or suburban driving. So much space in the back. I stayed at a caravan park some time ago and slept in the back of the car comfortably.. able to fully stretch out with a good mattress. I keep the backs seats down permanently for my dog who travels with me often. He has a veritable paddock in the back. The issue with brakes is simply how you use them. Replacing the pads and discs is surprisingly economical. I have a great mechanic who does a thorough job at every service and gives me a comprehensive report each service. So far nothing to report at 220000ks. Here's the thing. I asked him about having major services at milestone kms when I bought the car, as is recommended by dealers. His response is that we do what is necessary at each service and there is no need to spend considerable dollars for a 'major service" and we will let you know what needs to be looked at, for example, two services down the road. He has saved me a considerable amount of dollars over the last three years. The proof of what he does is the car is running beautifully. Anyways .. happy driving and I recommend these cars without reservation.

I also notice under the top plastic cover behind the fill cap something sticks up from the valve cover as is wet. Plus oil slopped around by them I think. Not fixing it unless it gets worse.

Care Care Nut AMD, today I looked at a 2017 Rav 5 hybrid Toyota Certified with 37,800 miles for $27,500. Per your fabulous video instructions, I checked for the oil leak - none. I found the filters which were down by the floor and checked them out. The filters looked a bit like an outside dryer vent that hadn’t been cleaned in a while - not horrendous but not definitely not clear/clean. I was actually surprised that the dealership had not checked and cleaned them but it did give me an idea that it may never have been checked. Does the dirty filter mean I should walk away? As I was taking the test drive, I educated the salesman about your channel and tested the steering (no accident). Clean carfax and regular oil changes. Your very valued thoughts?

Very informative thank you; About a Rav4 Hybrid XLE 2019, I heard there is a problem with the main electrical cable; no one at Toyota would commit to say that there exists a problem, but will deal with when it happens (?).

17’ RAV, 47K…we’ve had it since 28K. 4 oil filter services so far from me. 0W20 synthetic used. Noticed 3 months ago some half dollar size drop marks in the driveway where there were none before. Sadly I found between the seem between the engine and transmission, rear main seal, is leaking. What could have happened? Thanks CCN…

Hello new subscriber here 🙋🏼♀️ My dad buys cars from auctions and I wanted to get a 2016-2018 Toyota RAV4 hybrid. Do you have any videos on what to look for in crashed cars or tips when buying a car that has been crashed ? This video was very helpful also. Thank you!!
@TheCarCareNut3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I don’t have a video specific to crashed cars but on hybrids I would make sure that the high voltage cable that runs underneath the car is intact and wouldn’t buy one with damage to it. Also under the hood on top of the transmission is the inverter which is the heart of the hybrid system also make sure it’s not damaged

Hi AMD, I have a 2018 RAV4 which has the timing cover leak. Brought it up with the dealer back in 2019 and a few more times since and they said Toyota does not consider it an official leak and are not going to fix it under warranty. What are my best options here? Is this timing cover leak a big deal or is it ok to live with? Love your channel and the content as well!
@hoseb35763 жыл бұрын
My 2018 RAV 4 does have this leak and when I took it in for the warranty repair the master tech there informed me that there was not enough fluid there to call it a leak. He said that if it doesn't form a drop then that it's not a leak and Toyota as a company doesn't fix/ warranty that. My question is why Toyota will not fix this if traces of oil are clearly coming out and the vehicle is still under warranty?

11:20 we let or hybrid RAV4 sit for a few years and the battery died🥲 thankfully it was still under warranty.

Any thoughts or concerns would be greatly appreciated! My Wife and I are looking at a used 1 owner 2017 RAV4 Limited Hybrid with 38k miles. Neither of us has ever owned a hybrid. My local Toyota dealership, where the vehicle was originally purchased and subsequently traded in at, stated that the only “replacement service” the vehicle required was a few “batteries” because the older couple rarely drove it, or for very far for that matter. It’s in immaculate condition, and the price is very fair, but any vehicle, especially a hybrid, with so few miles, has me curious... The service advisor told me that he believed the couple was so tired of replacing the drained “batteries” that they simply traded it for a non-hybrid model this year. “They loved the gas mileage, but they simply didn’t drive it often enough to keep the battery charged. Hybrids are only reliable and happy if they’re driven often.” My Wife loves to drive, and has a healthy commute which packs on mileage easily. Bueno, or no bueno?
@TheCarCareNut3 жыл бұрын
Hi! They’re likely referring to the 12v battery dying. I think that’s a good hybrid model to own. Given the age of the car and the mileage I’d say it’s a good hybrid to buy
@BrianVonClick3 жыл бұрын
Well, unfortunately we were late for our appointment to view the Hybrid with my Wife, and it SOLD! We ended up, however, finding a 2016 RAV4 Limited Hybrid that was a 1 Owner and only 8500 miles on the odometer. Everything checked out. Not wrecked, flooded, or stolen. Just an older gent that didn’t drive much during his 5 years with it. Lived in the garage hooked to a battery charger. We’ve got 7 years/100k whichever comes first worth of warranty on it to boot. Needless to say, we took it and are very happy with it. Thanks!

Bought my wife a mint 2011 before Covid. Find or ask a family member or friend if they know a mechanic who specializes in Toyota's. He will plug the computer to it and drive it to know what's going on with it. I also use Toyota for oil changes and they've done courtesy checks.

To add note even this is quite old video, Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D 2009-2013 is mostly affected with coolant leak which can be detected on same way like it is said for Rav4 at 3:43 . My Avensis started to leak at around 30K , but somehow today 165K and it does not leak anymore , was leaking for 2-3 years and suddenly stopped leaking. Dunno how and what caused it to stop leaking, I know its water pump issue, but it working, no overheating issue or so , so while it is like that for me there is no need to fix anything.
