This past November I picked up a 2017 MacBook Air with the i7, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD for $450 at a pawnshop. My HP Pavilion laptop died on me and I had been using a low end HP for a few months, and needed something better for photo editing. I now have the 16” MBP, and have my daughter the Air. She absolutely loves it. She uses it for doing a lot of drawing using SketchBook, and media consumption. The HP I had bought for her had the same problem as mine, and both were 2016 models less than 2 years old when they quit working.

I think late 2013 15 inch is the best bang for buck mac you can buy right now. I picked mine up for 800eur with new screen fitted(it is the last model with the extended apple screen warraty covering the coating issues), haswell, 750m, pci-e, mimo and okay 256gb ram which is usable but not perfect. runs smoothly with high sierra and has plenty of horsepower to last another 3 years. No problems on stage running the latest VST-s. I'm super pleased - great quality laptop and the feeling that I've not overpaid for it.

@ChrisCanadianHusky6 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised. But I'm not talking only Microsoft Word here, which a Windows laptop should be able to run well, I mean it's the same company. I am talking about some light to medium video editing, nothing too fancy and having a very portable laptop (11 inch) that has good enough specs to do most of the tasks one can think of. And on Windows territory you can't really seem to find a good 11 inch laptop these days.

Last year I bought a mid-2013 13 inch Macbook Air used for $500 off ebay. It was my first Apple computer since the 90s. I think it was worth it. I only bought it because I didn't want to deal with the issues of a Hackintosh and wanted to become more familiar with macOS. Took it on a few trips since it was small and the battery life is amazing. The trackpad is the sole reason to get a Macbook. The downside to the laptop is the horrible screen. 900p TN panel. I'm picky about displays and because of that.... I recently bought a slightly used mid-2017 Macbook Pro 13 inch off ebay. This one has become my primary laptop for travel and programming. I still have the Macbook Air as a Linux machine. Might consider selling it, I don't know. I'm still an Apple critic and I hate so many of Apple's policies, but that trackpad so good.

I picked up my first Mac about three-four years ago for about $500, and I'm on it as I'm typing this. It's a 2008 aluminum unibody MacBook (not an Air, not a Pro...MacBook), that I upgraded with 8GB of RAM, a 128 SSD, and a new battery, and I have to say that this thing is rock solid. Sure, being almost 10 years old now there are some things that are a bother (like no longer receiving updates to macOS from OS X) but the 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo doesn't hold me back very much for day to day tasks, and it actually feels a lot better in terms of performance than my five year old Toshiba laptop that runs Windows 10. Later this year though I do plan on upgrading to a new MacBook Air (need those legacy ports!) though I do plan on seeing exactly how far I can push this aging Mac. Using any other computer after ten years is almost laughable, but this little Mac just keeps chugging along.

I just upgraded my sister’s 2011 MacBook Pro non retina with an SSD and 8gb of ram. This thing literally flies. It’s hard to notice a difference with 2017 models in everyday use (besides the screen resolution) but other than that it is incredible. Super recommended if you don’t do 4K video editing or something like that. It also support 2k monitors (which I will probably buy).
@brandoncasey59776 жыл бұрын
Why would anyone buy this (especially used) over a new windows laptop with an IPS display (and touch). This is still a duel core laptop when you can get a low power quad core now with Coffee lake. That display is disgusting (just like on the current model MB Air). If Apple wants to sell to low income consumers they should make a budget friendly product, but we all know they won't do that.
@skifree06 жыл бұрын
The second point contradicts ur first point. Apple will never make a budget oriented Mac, therefore the only way to get into the mac is secondhand which in-turn contradicts the very first point you made of "why would anyone buy this".
@brandoncasey59776 жыл бұрын
Highlighted reply skifree You do understand that the last sentence was sarcasm right. Unless you have so much money to burn for the sake of buying into a brand that it's irrelevant to you, no one should be trying to "buy into" mac. Apples greatest victims are those low income individuals who buy second hand macs with no warranties for far more than they can afford and then are completely screwed if it breaks. I've known several of these individuals in my personal life. There are people on welfare that buy second hand Macs because of the brand/identity marketing who live hundreds of miles away from a third party repairer, whose services they couldn't afford anyway.
@skifree06 жыл бұрын
And yet you fail to consider the people who buy second hand macs as a critical tool. what if it improves their the computer usage, and are forced to buy used because they can't afford new hardware. My point being you can't say secondhand macs are useless just buy saying you know people who bought them way outside their budget. Even just as a simple counterpoint, I know colleagues who buy secondhand macs, because new ones are too costly, and yet the mac is a critical component in their workflow. Then in what situation is the mac have no point. Are you going to tell those people "a mac is pointless, just buy a windows machine and just spend countless hours relearning how to get work done"
@brandoncasey59776 жыл бұрын
skifree If they have a low income (and that is not realistically expected to improve for a few years) switching to windows and adjusting is probably a good idea. Learning Windows can be done in a few days. The only real exception I can think of is low paid or student video editors who are accustomed to FCP. Those individuals should be buying something more powerful than the MB Air anyway (and other professional Apple users like App Developers and Creatives should have too much income to be considered in this discussion). Apple used to have a lot more first party software that added value to their machines, now FCP X and Garage Band are pretty much it. Macs used to be extremely long lasting and also third party repairable but that is no longer true. Recent Macbooks (2011 and later) probably won't hold up as well because they thermal throttle like crazy (heat kills components) and Apple wants them to die within a year or two of the warranty running out anyway (the secondary market doesn't create profit for Apple). If I was a low income person I would buy a new Windows Laptop for the same amount (or less) than I would spend on a used Mac. Low income individuals need a warranty. Apple isn't for professionals anymore, their target market is soccer moms (or dads) with rich spouses who want a status symbol (AKA Idiots). Anyone other than that demographic should avoid considering Apple until they provide more value to justify their products price premiums and limitations (like they did in the 2000's). Please tell me which group other than Video Editors would have to spend "countless hours" transitioning to Windows from OSX? That's usually a problem for very casual computer users.

I think you really should consider your point into thinking app developers automatically have too much income. Why do you assume that app developers are automatically making money. People are swimming in student debt to learn CS, and now you say "they should have enough money" to afford apple's absurd pricing. and lets not forget that ANYONE can be an app developer. the internet is more than enough to be a solid starting point and all you need are the proper channels for development ( apple provides with a unix environment and xcode for iOS apps). My entire career in CS started with an interest in iOS development. I was lucky to own a mac (though no iPhone, so i ran it off the simulator), but are you going to say "you can't afford a new mac, don't buy secondhand, just buy a windows machine and abandon your interests"? And no one says that a secondhand apple machine is the perfect tool either. I am merely explaining IT IS A TOOL. of course it's slow, of course it may not have the greatest screen or the most ram. But there is no doubt that having a mac gives pathways to an individual, and secondhand is the cheapest access to it. The TL:DR, I'm not disagreeing with your logic with using macs as status symbols. I don't agree with the apple branding either and it makes paints a untrue image on true professionals . but you are making a HUGE false assumption saying ALL professional (or future professionals) don't use macs. And projecting your idea that all mac users are "idiots" onto the many of us that write the very software you use on a daily basis. furthermore, you are making a huge assumption that developers are automatically wealthy enough to afford it, without even thinking of how those developers got started. Access to development should not be dictated by your income. if you like the mac for its usage then at all expense buy second hand.

Bought a barely used 2015, mint condition 13" Air with 256/8gb for less than half its price. Has all the ports I need, including a SD card, full size USBs 3.0 and 70 cycles on the battery. It is for Text editing, surfing web, etc. The tipical Air usage. No regrets, best purchase ever. Highly recommend.

@mcchilldaman6 жыл бұрын
GLAMCOUPXO i would say so, it is fast enough to run any word processing and basic video editing. If you want to push it, it can handle some light gaming, i was able to get it to run CS:Source and portal. What i primarily used it for was music production with Logic pro X, which if you can afford it, is really good for some medium to large music tracks. Overall, if all you want to do is word processing and other school needs, this isn't a bad mac to use, it can support up to macOS 10.14. But i would reccomend if you plan on buying one, get it with more than 60 Gb. They run on ebay for about $200-$350

I have the same one too! I’m a light worker when it comes to computers and such so I use my MacBook Air for that sorta stuff along with watching tv and music. However, I’m a huge pc gamer so I have a massive Lenovo beast of a computer for heavy tasks like that with 16 GB ram and 1 TB hard drive. I promised myself I would never ever game on a Mac haha

Mini McChill actually I just found on amazon the other day a SanDisk USB 3.1 128 GB memory micro drive for like $20 that u can just keep plugged into ur MacBook and it expands the memory and is really non intrusive bc the drive itself is the size of the USB chip/plug used for some wireless USB mice and keyboards out there

Nice simple review. I'm older and my daily laptop is a 2013 11" Air (with 8gb) - the size is Perfect. in my bag I keep a maxed out Dell latitude (given to me ) , a new iPad and 2 iphones (6s and a X)...at home I have a 27" 5K IMac (32 gb and 2TB of SSD)...I use the air 90% of the time - on the road AND at home. The screen as compared to my iPad and phones - or especially my home machine, but honestly it is just not a bid deal to me. My 3 kids all have new/newer MBPs loaded with I7, 256/512 SSD and 16GB of RAM - I've used theirs...I give those examples only to illustrate I've used other machines to compare. My MBA is an INCREDIBLE VALUE - and if it stops working today...IF I could find a low battery life unit - I'd buy a used 11" with 8GB in a heartbeat.

I believe I have a 2014 or 2015 MacBook Air and it's honestly the best laptop I've ever owned. I've used this laptop, day and night, for hours on end, at its maximum capacity, and it works wonderfully, even after so long. In the more than three years since I've owned the laptop, I've only had to bring it to the Genius Bar once, and that was because I had filled up the disk space with all of my work and needed help storing my work externally. This laptop in no way, shape, or form feels old or out of date. With little more than basic maintenance, this laptop looks and runs much like it did when I had bought the laptop three years ago.

I will clarify that until now, I haven't played any games on my MacBook Air as I'm not the gamer type, but having just downloaded Fortnite, I'm somewhat disappointed that I can only play a good game of Fortnite at the lowest quality.
