He just shrugged his shoulders and said it's a BMW. I bought a 6-year-old Mazda 626 diesel instead for £1700 with 125.000 miles. I went all over the UK and Europe with it - it was flawless. I knew I could trust it to get me back home without needing any visits to garages in foreign lands. Eventually, parts of it rusted to dust because the previous owner lived right by the sea and the salt got to it. I've now owned a 10-year-old Yaris for 6 years, it too is flawless. This has been the most reliable car I’ve owned. Put 100,000 miles on it in about 3 years and has cost maybe 2000-3000 gbp in repairs / regular maintenance. Engine and transmission still very healthy at 250k miles

Many of these were used by limousine companies and for-hire drivers, so the specifications were often lacking in the optional extras department and they have quite high mileage. Though they’re relatively cheap to buy second-hand with all the massive depreciation, they’ll cost a LOT to maintain.
@flam74692 жыл бұрын
That is something to keep in mind. The one I bought a few months ago has 125k km on it, was most likely owned by a for-hire driver, and I'm at least the 3rd owner. While that sounds pretty terrible, 730d's are super rare here, so someone really really wanted one. I had it professionally inspected before buying and was told it was mechanically perfect. Remember though, that with these diesels, over 100k km you must change the timing chain, which involves dropping the engine and the transmission. That's why you see a lot of diesels being sold with around 100k km. I knew what I was getting into though and had a mechanic lined up and did the timing chain swap, replaced all the seals, filters, gaskets, hoses and rewrapped some of the wiring. So tack on another 5-10k to the price. Once that was done though, that car is great and can go another 100k km without needing a new timing chain (and more gaskets, etc). On the plus side, these straight 6 engines can easily last way over 300k km.

Great video Matt, I had a facelifted 2013 730d m sport which I bought in 2019 with 45k miles. Despite a FDSH, I had numerous niggles with mine including air suspension, e-handbrake and washer jets(!), all costly to sort out (as were new brakes and tyres like you said!). When lockdown came, I barely used it as my job became remote-based, i went from doing 15k per year to 1k. It wasn't too happy about being left on my drive, very complicated and 'boinged' a lot. I am a BMW fan boy (owning several 3 and 5 series) and still have a Z4 'toy', but I didn't have the best experience with the F01 so sold it this year (at 60k) and bought your favourite car... a mk5 2008 golf gti-simple, reliable & fun runabout! I would feel happy any day to start it up and drive to the south of France! The power just keeps on coming, and Just feels indestructible- but of course it is not ! I had an oil leak from the gearbox as the two seals either side of the box were leaking - cost a few pounds each, but by the time the box was drained, new oil fitted, filters changed (both of them) the bill came to £600 so you need to keep a grand set aside for unforeseen costs. You must get one with a full service record from a main dealer or specialist garage. Mine has heads up display (which is excellent), soft close doors, and screens in the back with Bluetooth headphones so the kids can watch their DVDs with the headphones on - bliss! So make sure you get one with the options you want. Mine has done 110,000 and feels almost like new. Some of these have done 200,000 miles!

Greetings from Scotland! Just step up to the next model and go for the 740d G11. If there are any (serious) faults with this model I haven't found them in the last few years! A bulletproof 3.0L inline 6 with a twin scroll turbo puts out a whopping 235kW - 315bhp - 320hp with 680Nm, 502 ft-lb of torque! Enough to tow start a Jumbo jet! Huge power which hits 60mph in 5 seconds and has no problem shaking hands with the speed limiter at 155mph. 8-speed auto box makes a super smooth progression through the gears. Interior is super comfy that makes really long journeys a dawdle too! The standard spec is ridiculously good with everything and a lot more at your fingertips! I know, I sound like I love it - because I do! Every time I drive it, I smile! I make excuses to take it anywhere I can! I get an average of 42mpg and I don't drive it gently! On a long motorway journey it often averages mid 50's mpg which for a beast is pretty impressive and it's also ULEZ! My MOT emissions test is so low it's almost fresh air! Oh and speaking of MOT's - it's had 4 yearly MOT's all without previous work and aced every one! Yes, nearly 7 years old and not one issue! Poor reliability/high service costs/expensive repairs - Not something I can speak about, because I haven't experienced any of them. Fully dealer serviced from day one and no complaints about charges. Am I rich - nope, I'm a pensioner who travels a LOT! I often spend a month travelling around Europe with it - why? Because it's cheaper and less hassle than aeroplanes! Seriously, what are you waiting for? Go get a palace on wheels and have some fun! 😂😂

Anyway, what convinced me, for the first time in my life, just spend the damn money on a car that I really like, rather than just four wheels to take me somewhere. You said in another video that all cars break, all of them cost money, so buy something you like, suck it up and change the oil and pay for the repairs. Yeah. The car is insanely fast, so quiet, so comfortable. My only disappointment is that it's TOO quiet. sometimes you want a little noise. Anyway, thanks for the way you explained things. You just found one with no extras thats why it makes you feeling that way like is nothing special. I mean you bought one without any extras. And the 740d looks amazing because you have the exhaust on both sites and they look gorgeous. I’m happy with mine. I drove 155’600km i never had an problem and i still have the same battery from the factory (2012).

Totally agree on your comment relating to ‘low mileage shouldn’t return failing injectors’ for example, but -and this doesn’t discriminate by brand-, it’s all dependent on how the previous owner(s) maintained them. Maintenance records a must.

Thanks for doing that as requested. In the meantime though I've bought a pampered 635d loaded with options. It's fantastic, love it but then I did have to get a new rear foglight and it cost £200, Higher spec BMW'S are not cheap to run but as long as you are careful the depreciation will get you into a fantastic car. I could have bought a much newer Ford Focus or similar but then I would be bored to death.

Thanks Matt for an informative insight into the 7 series. BMW were renowned in the past to be tight on standard equipment, but it is still surprising that they still do it with their Luxo Barge.

I have an F02 750li. Haven’t had any issues and owned mine for a year and a half. Drives and handles great. Not as great fuel economy as this one though, the 4.4liter twin turbo will do that. Pro tip though, make sure you don’t buy any that has the standard n63engine make sure you get at least an n63b44tu1 engine

Idk how you got lucky but my f02 750li went to poopoo after a week of owning it. Transmission started going out. Battery kept dying, gas gets absolutely SUCKED outta it, constant refilling oil, gets stuck in gears along with jumps/slams into gears. I'll turn my car all the way off , turn it on next day and have a code telling me something was on the entire night and is eating my battery power.

I always thought BMW used the same engines for both 5 and 7 series. So, I don't exactly understand why that engine is so unreliable on this 7 series....unless the previous owner wasn't as caring as he should've been...otherwise, I really do like this car. I have been considering buying an S class for long journey from England to Turkey, which is now impossible to do due to restrictions. But, I love the 7 series and perhaps if I can find a good one then I'll buy one of these. Many thanks for the video. Great as always 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

If there’s one thing I’d change when buying a used car it would be the steering wheel… when the leather gets highly polished they just don’t feel great to hold. Though I hate to think what that would cost!

Superb Motors these. 63 plate Facelift in same Colours as Matt's. Best car ever at the time. Worse thing was indeed the hideaway Interior Door Handles. Used to drive me nuts when passengers started yanking on the Door Pocket Card or door release catch!! Apart from that...Loved it! :)

When you say a massively depreciated luxury barge, you have to bare in mind that while you own it, it will become a deprecating luxury barge, losing more until it will be £3,000 in 2026. That's a big loss. What a shame. My last BMW was an E34 M5 which when sold went towards a 25% deposit on a house. Times have changed. Loved the video as usual.

This is a high point of design for the 7 Series: simple, clean, elegant and athletic - obviously influenced by what they were doing at RR at the time. The current hockey stick generation is far too blingy. REQUEST: Could you return to the ORIGINAL intro music when you first started?....that was the best. This one sounds like glorified morse code.

I love it. I have been driving a 530i for a long time, and a friend finally got to return home after COVID, and made me a deal on his 740i. Personally, I didn't think it was a big car, I have had two other luxury cars, a 1966 Cadillac Fleetwood, and a 1970 El Dorado (8 liter V8); a 740i looks like a peanut next to a hot dog compared to either of these. Perhaps the way it drove made it seem smaller, it was firm, responsive, with no body roll. It wasn't until I got it home and tried to park it that I realized how large it was. I live in Tokyo, and my condo has one of those automated parking garages. I was barely able to squeeze the 7 series into it. If the car were an inch longer and half an inch wider, it wouldn't have fit. It would have sucked to have bought a car and found the space too small, my current space costs more than the monthly payment on a brand new 7 series, a larger spot would cost 20% more. Anyway, its a great car, and a great value.

The current Jag XJ is better looking the 7 is all kinda cool with heavy depreciation. I suggest buy one finessed all fixed on her tech/toys. As it breaks leave it all run it from IOk down to a grand and bin it. It isn’t ugly it isn’t pretty it has presence. Must be black. Tho.

Just prepare for paying thousands a year in repairs, and those repairs can take a month to complete with part wait times, and labour times. Best of Luck!

I don't think injectors can fail on an '85,000' mile BMW 3.0d. Those engines are built very well in my opinion and are very reliable if driven carefully. This is what the previous owner might have done which came to my mind. Between each MOT he goes to rewind the mileage so when he goes to sell the car, the miles would be less than the actual car is at. And so thats why the injector might have failed because the car is probably more high mileage than 85,000 miles
