How many times over the last twenty years have I bought an upgraded camera because influencers or others have "told me" that the dynamic range, focusing, or whatever was 100% better than what I had, only to find out that the new camera was only marginally better (at best) and that I already had enough camera with my old gear? Professional photographers were making pro-level prints using cameras like the 12 MP D3 in the day. That camera had fantastic autofocus and beautiful images. Obviously, cameras have advanced since then, but older cameras could certainly do the job. I remember talking to a wedding photographer (at a wedding) who was shooting with an original 5D and a 5DII when the 5D IV had been out for years. He had no need to upgrade because he knew what he was doing and how to get the most out of cameras. Clients care about the image. They couldn't care less what camera was used. Of course, some elite photographers need every advantage. I take pretty nice photos, but I'm nowhere near elite level, so all is good with my older gear.

I have both OG R5 and R1 mainly for wildlife. R5 is not that bad as well R1 is not that good. Even AF, R5 is even better in some case. Especially the small subject against the strong backlight. Many many times, R5 can detect and lock the subject while R1 fails to do so. Digital cameras came to their peak at R5 or Sony A1. There hardly have any breakthrough technology after that. Meanwhile, all mark IIs or new model are the result of some compromise to either speed or IQ.

Actually R5mkII has lower dynamic range. I appreciate your advise. I still have a 6Dmk II that I never loved after having a 5d and a eos 3 I still own. I want a decent dynamic range camera capable of 4k video at 120 frames thou 80% of the time I'm going to shoot pictures - portraits landscape and some sport or rc airplanes -. I' ve learnt well it's absurd spending too much for instruments I don't exploit thou I 've learnt as well a product too much oriented to consumers in hobby I really love might stop me from using it - that's what happened to me with my 6DmkII. I'd really love to use again an eye-control af as I have on my eos 3 that is very useful even in portraits session but the price of R5mk II and the lower dynamics make me be more realistic. I just wait for the R6 mk III, test it in my hands with the R5 and then I'm.going to decide. Thank you for encouraging not falling for the last and more expensive products when they are actually not needed and the older ones can do a decent job for much less money
@TonyMellinger3 ай бұрын
Interesting comments about the lower dynamic range. Is that in photo or video? I hadn’t heard that yet
@blackimp49873 ай бұрын
@@TonyMellinger I saw in many reviews that in photos at higher iso R5 are cleaner than R5mk II and many reviewers complain about that and this results in slightly lower dynamic as well. It's after all the logical consequence of adopting a stacked sensor as the added electronic layer produces thermal noise. I don't know if in compressed video formats it's visible. Moreover: a stacked sensor has a great meaning for reducing the twist of objects moving fast when shooting with the electronic shutter but from what I saw in R5mk II images of sports where you swing quickly a tool like a racket it still results a little twisted. This is because the only true solution would be a parallel acquisition of all the pixels. I think Sony just made a camera that implements that acquisition system. Otherwise it's better having a normal CMOS and shooting with mechanical shutter in my opinion
