I am 54 years young, have almost every gaming system since the Intellivision in 1979, and purchased the Steam Deck OLED 512GB in early December, with the Steam Dock (I know its pricey, but it was easy). Not to go over the top, but hard not to gush about it…it’s exceptional. I travel for work, and it has gone with me on my last two trips. I play it on the plane, in the airport, and my hotel room in the evenings. The battery lasts much longer than I expected…but I will probably get a battery bank at some point. When I am home…connect it to the Dock, and it plays beautifully on my 40” 4K TV, connected to a PS5 controller. It will play thousands of games from Steam. I haven’t touched another system this whole month. It is quickly becoming my go to system. The final and best thing about it, is I have 3 sons that are all gamers. They all have super powered gaming laptops, and now with my Steam Deck I am enjoying a bunch of games with them in co-op. The Steam Deck has just exceeded all my expectations, and given me another avenue to connect with my sons. I LOVE IT!

I haven't had a gaming pc for nearly a decade, since my last one was fried by lightning. Ever since, I've gone from cheap refurbished console to cheap refurbished console, always a generation behind and always because replacing my gaming rig stopped being plausible for me in the modern economy. I have a 16 year old steam account with 150 games on it that hasn't been touched since January 2015. But this year, things were good and I got an unexpected Christmas bonus. I was looking at buying into the modern generation with a ps5, then I remembered the steam deck existed. After weeks of research, I bought the 1tb OLED deck and am waiting on its arrival. I'm looking forward to getting back into PC gaming with my steam deck, which was way way way more affordable than building another $2,000 gaming pc. You asked what got us to buy it, so there ya go! Thanks for the informative video. I've been seriously considering getting a steam deck lately. I am a big fan of the Linux OS and Valve has done the most good work toward making gaming possible on Linux, so there is one reason for me to get one. I'll admit that I don't like Steam because of the software that must run on my PC in order to use it. Same for GoG Galaxy btw. I installed GoG a couple weeks ago to keep No Mans Sky updated, since there are so many updates on that game. Uninstalled it the same day, drives me nuts. I don't have a Steam account at the moment, so no games in my library, but I do have 260 games on GoG currently. If I do get the steam deck, I will purchase some games for it, but I probably won't play those games on PC. The second big reason for me to get a "deck" is to play racing games, since GoG don't have very many good racing games. Also I've seen some good space games that are not available on GoG that I would most likely enjoy playing. As far as handheld hardware goes, it will definitely NOT have Windoze as the OS. I would love to get rid of Microsoft all together on my PC's as well, but there are many software programs that I use for graphics design that are probably never going to run on Linux. My hatred for Windows only increases on a daily basis, but I love some of the software that I've paid A LOT of money for, so I'm stuck using it on at least one computer for now. If Valve makes a Steam OS for PC I will build a gaming rig just for that, fingers crossed.

A thing to consider for people deciding is how/where you normally game. I game laying down in bed most of the time and its way to heavy to hold comfortablely in that position for long periods. So I got a controller, then screen is to far away so I thought about getting a larger screen and released a laptop would be 10× better for me. And for travel Ive found a laptop takes up much less valuable space in a bag than the awkward shape of steam deck and I would have a laptop with me anyway. Steam deck is cool but there is no scenario where it has any advantage over a laptop for my use case. So I sold steam deck and upgraded laptop to something thats also more powerful than steam deck. Only disadvantage is more expensive. And higher power draw at 100W

I advise anyone wanting to purchase one to get one as cheap as humanly possible. Like get a refurbished 64gb from GameStop. And then you can just swap out the internal storage later and throw in a 500gb or terabyte SD card for now. The reason I say go cheap is because while the device is great, you’re paying a lot of money for its form factor. Which is fair don’t get me wrong. But at the end of the day, you’re dropping $400 on a device that’s weaker than a $300 Xbox series S. Which is reasonable considering that it’s a handheld. But I know many people who use the deck mostly at home or docked. It’s worth the price 100%. I paid full price for mine. But if I could, I’d just get a refurbished from valve or GameStop. Remember you can always expand the storage on these things, so getting the lower storage option can be wise. Just spend the money down the line when you need it.
@erikpoephoofdАй бұрын
Disagree, the OLED model has a long list of improvements over the LCD.
@EggEnjoyerАй бұрын
@ None that make it worth $600. KZbinrs really glaze the oled and make it seem like some amazing thing. At the end of the day you’re dropping $600 on a device less powerful than a $300 Xbox series S. It really only has a few improvements over the LCD. It’s functionally the same device. If you have the disposable income, go for it. But if you like to save money or you’re some broke 20 something who can’t always afford the expensive gadgets (me), don’t feel pressured to get the oled. Most peope have the LCD anyway and you’re literally not missing anything at all.
@erikpoephoofdАй бұрын
@@EggEnjoyer While purely looking at performance they're the same, there are many upgrades in the OLED. The wifi is faster so you're games are downloaded quicker, the RAM is faster, the battery is bigger, the APU is more efficient, the fan is bigger and quieter, the screen is brighter and therefore more suited for outside use. Battery life is 30% better. My reasoning is, if I'm going to drop so much cash on a device, I don't want the half assed one. 2H battery life is just too little playing AAA games. The prices difference is €140, so for most people, if you can save up two months extra, that might be worth it. However, you can only spend that money once and if you're strapped for cash, spending too much on a console might not be the best option.
@EggEnjoyerАй бұрын
@ The WiFi is only faster if you have an up to date WiFi modem. I wonder how many people aren’t aware and are using their old WiFi tower with their oled, oblivious to the fact it isn’t doing anything. The only major upgrade is the battery. The LCD is not half assed. It may seem that way with his KZbinrs talk about the device, but it’s not. The oled is quieter… you don’t even know what the lcd sounds like. It doesn’t make much noise. In my opinion you’re better off saving the money and spending it on accessories like a controller, a docking station and expanded storage and of course some games. Oled is glazed and made to seem like a major upgraded by KZbinrs. But they are literally the same device that do the exact same thing. These people buy and talk about these product because it’s their job. No hate oled, if you got the money the spend it. I’m a broke college guy who needs to pay for school and rent and the oled wasn’t worth it.

Still don't think it's for me - too big, too heavy and don't really care for PC gaming. I'll take a regular home console or smaller handheld every time. Yes, I have a steam library with quite a few games but I never play them... I do like Linux and have been running it on various boxes since you used to have to recompile your kernel to get a GUI running.

Since people do nvme storage upgrades …Does the micro SD card allow less graphic intensive games to run off of it or is it shader or anything can go on it ? (Would obviously use nvme for more graphic intensive games , micro sd for smaller games like stardew) or does the micro sd card serve another purpose?
@jfiggy7145Ай бұрын
@@elderleos6913 Anything can go on it it’s just the NVME ssd is faster when it comes to loading times for your games so anything that’s a triple A title I’d put on the internal storage.

I just bought one 2nd hand £290 64gig, got a 256gid memory card. I have an Xbox one from back in the day. I have a 6 year old so have better things to do these days but do like to play the games I did back in the day from the 360 generation. I usually use quacked games (I don't endorse piracy) but most of my games are old outdated ones like cod world at war and battlefield 3 these are what I play not online obviously, I did however just purchase Hogwarts Legacy from the steam store which I play from time to time because of reasons stated above. I'll happily pay for AAA games if they take my fancy. I'm not a pc gamer but the steam deck makes it easier to play the old games I loved playing an the odd newer title. Grab one if you can. I don't even really play emulated old systems via emulation as as great as those old systems are I'm just older and don't feel the need to play those old systems anymore. And yeah Linux took some time to figure out but I can make my way through it now.👍

You’re gonna need a bigger memory card, ask me how I know 😂 Get a bigger memory card and swap out the internal ssd, it’s quick and easy
@jshakseby2279Ай бұрын
@EggEnjoyer I know I thought 256 was big but to be fair if I simply play the games I've got to completion then I can delete them and get more.

@ Great mindset that I should adopt. I’m already falling into the steam trap of buying every $10 game I see 😫
@jshakseby2279Ай бұрын
@EggEnjoyer yeah I think that's the issue. Trying to put as many games on the system that memory will allow regardless if you play them or not. I got battlefield 3, played for a while but like all games from the past yeah it's great to play but in the long run it's not 2013 anymore and things (life I mean) has moved on and sometimes leaving things in the past is the best way.

@@ancoloco Do you want to play GTA 6 on the go with not so great graphics or do you want to play GTA 6 with decent graphics but at home or a desk? My answer is the steam deck but both aren’t bad purchases whichever way you decide to go
@EggEnjoyerАй бұрын
Do you have anything else to game on? If not I suggest the ps5. The reason being that while the steam deck is great and is powerfully for what it is, it is not strong enough to run all the latest games. So if you’re looking forward to the best games, especially games like GTA V, you’ll need a ps5. If you play mostly older games. Games from 2020 and below, you’ll have a blast on steam deck. Not to say it can’t run any modern games. It just can’t do it too well. It really depends on what kind of gamer you are. I play a lot of old games even on my console. So the steam deck is perfect for me. If you play mostly newer stuff, I’d suggest the PlayStation for you. I know you said you only want one console but I’d suggest you get the steam deck at a later date after your ps5. Maybe buy a used one and try it out
