Hey Jon I have a question. Do you know how to fix the wobble you where talking about?. I have a 22 4Runner 4X4 and that wobble bothers me a lot. I’m thinking to trade mine for a 4x2 to solve the issue. Is that the only solution ? I already replaced de needle bearing for the bushing on the differential axle on drivers side. I saw some improvement but it still wobbles.

Have them both. The 4runner has way more versatility. You can sleep in the 4runner and if you have kids, access to a food cooler in the rear cargo area saves you from stopping to access the back. If I were single, I would take the Taco just cause I like trucks better.

I test drove both and I can’t get over the small size of the the cab in the Tacoma. I honestly still want one with a stick someday but I was trading in my F-150 and needed a main vehicle and to me at 6’3, the 4runner is way more comfortable to drive. Now that I’ve had my 4runner a few months, I definitely made the right decision.

Good call! I am 5' 11" and bought a Tacoma many years ago in 2006 and found out within a few weeks (first trip longer than 25 miles) that the seating position was pure torture. I bought the truck for great reliability of course but it soured me on Toyotas for many years. I am, however, taking a very hard look at the 4 runner based on more interior room and the fact that it is still made entirely in Japan.

Great comparison. Of all the brands and models on the market the choice between a Tacoma or a 4Runner seems the most prevalent and sometimes difficult for folk to decide. We had a 2020 SR5 which was wonderful. We needed a pickup to haul stuff around, fill the back with mulch for the garden, haul lumber, etc. Recreationally as sea kayakers, campers, hikers, outdoor activities it’s perfect with a wealth of options to configure the bed for your needs. Just so much more practical. Rear passenger leg room is subjective and we would never make a decision for occasional passengers to feel more comfortable. If you have kids the room is fine. Utility, flexibility is the key. We didn’t want to deal with another large SUV for long trips or even around town. The Tacoma stayed planted, is more nimble, and was a comfortable long-distance driver. Otherwise we would have gone with a Subaru Outback instead. A natural selection and was perfect for our needs. Three (3) years later we traded it in recently for a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road with Predator package, right at the peak of used car prices. Even with the TRD upgrade from the SR5 we almost broke even, less than a $500 difference. Here's a tip on reducing the cost of a “higher model”. Don’t buy off the lot and pay for stuff you will never use or compromise on the color. Instead, sit down with your sales rep and order your Tacoma or 4Runner off of Toyota’s National Inventory. It arrived in 3 weeks. Why? Because the sales rep can sit down with you and DELETE packages or items you do not want and add others you want. The result is that you get a vehicle configured to your specific needs without unnecessary overhead. It brought the cost down to an equally equipped SR5 even including the Predator package which was discounted by Toyota at the time. We also got an additional $x thousand's discount from the dealership (largest sales volume in the SE region) and a couple freebies like hats and free break-in oil change, checkup at 750 miles independent of the regular free schedule. Timing and patience is everything, besides having a great dealership that is responsible, welcoming and knows you as a customer by name when you drop by is important to us. There is never any reason to pay retail or above for a 4Runner or Tacoma. Aside. For the 2022 we added a Pedal Commander. We had reservations, but my wife who always complained about the “sluggishness” loves it and drives faster than ever! With a pickup we added a gun rack for our hiking poles. BTW, if you have a 3D Printer there are hundreds of Tacoma designed parts and accessories for all generations to print for free and you can design your own using a free “maker” license from AutoDesk Fusion 360 CAD program. I recently designed a console insert for my handgun as an example. Search: www.stlfinder.com and www.thingiverse.com . There are many other sites to search.

4 runner all day man the cab space in the Tacoma was just entirely too small especially if your planning on or have a family. That’s one reason. Toyota dealership near me had my taco order in I sat for 7 months no answer with the wrong trans package installed. No remorse or even tried to come to an agreement with pricing once I went to another dealership and started looking at runners. They don’t care they just want your money. Then Aprs are through the roof right now I remember getting 2%s back in the day. Any ways buying the runner was a nightmare they went friendly and they weren’t knowledgeable about the runner with all questions I was asking. Just another job for the girl I was working with. Finally came to terms with them with what I WANTED out of the deal and we made a deal cut 5 k off the msrp of the pre installed packages which to be fair weren’t too bad, 3 things I would have had them taken off but I didn’t want to wait any longer I had already been waiting 7 months for a taco and they could have came back and said they cancelled it. Hedged my bets. But I did get the car at msrp and no mark ups except for the packages with 5k off for Toyota thon. The 4 runner is smoother, bigger, has more room for cargo and I feel the suspension is better. Yes it’s slower but you have to drive the speed limit in CO or they will screw u bad cops don’t play out here. The 3d print option is great I want to have my co worker make me a couple inserts for those weird cubbies that runner has

I had both vehicles as well. For me, it came down to the rear suspension and the superiority of coil springs over leaves. The other major difference was the weight distribution in the forerunner making it a much better performer in the snow.

Bought my 4Runner in 2021 and so glad I chose it over the Tacoma. Had a Tacoma TRDOR rental the last two times I was in Colorado and really found it uncomfortable compared to my 4Runner. Tacome impressions: The driving position wasn't great. Felt like I was sitting on the floor. Visibility wasn't great and everything felt cramped. Biggest annoyance: the transmission! It felt like it was searching for a gear on the highway all the time. Constant upshifting to just maintain 70+ mph. The 4Runner engine/trans is so much smoother and more sure of itself. While I did think the Taco was well built and solid feeling I did miss my 4R!

Driving position wise I found the exact opposite to be true. I could never get comfortable in my 4R whereas the Taco is one of the more comfortable vehicles I've driven. In fact I just completed a 1000mil in 3day trip and there was zero fatigue. OTOH I have experienced a bit of gear hunting but only in the mountains of NH, never anywhere else. I don't buy vehicles for their power so that wasn't an issue for either the 4R or Tacoma. Zero issues for either, as compared to the two Jeeps I've had which were both disasters reliability wise, which in fact pushed me towards Toyota. I had a Blazer as well but that was a huge POS.

I recall driving to DC in my 4R once (500mi) and my hands were aching due to the steering effort whereas that doesn't exist at all in my Tacoma. And comfort is very subjective. If I can drive several hundred miles with zero fatigue then I couldn't care less about the driving position (as long as it's a safe position). And I'm very picky, I've traded cars just after a few months because I couldn't get comfortable. It took about a month to find my current position. And to ensure that it doesn't ever change, except for back and forth I've actually disconnected the motors under the seat. Regardless I get your concern. I too read all the same comments regarding seating position but in the end a) you tend to hear about the bad experiences vs the good ones and b) it really does come down to how your body is constructed. Toyota continues to sell around 250k per year so conclude from that what you will.

Short story... I own 2010 4runner and 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road. I prefer 4runner . I use the tacoma for truck stuff but use the 4runner more often because larger interior and much more comfortable to drive. Also when off roading the 4runner has larger wheels/tires and really enjoys the rough terrain with coil rear shocks. Either way cant go wrong

I have a 4Runner and came out of a Sequoia. I am entering my third year with the 4Runner and it keeps growing on me. It is just a rock solid vehicle. I considered getting a Tacoma, but I can carry pretty much carry any cargo I need in the 4Runner. The only thing I wish I had a truck for would be when mulching the gardens, trash runs, yard cleanup, etc.

I have both (v6 versions) along with a fj cruiser (all 4x4). I prefer the build quality of the fj and 4 runner over the tacoma. Not surprising the 2 I prefer are both built in japan and the tacoma in Mexico. Do with this info as you wish. As far as real worl everyday usefulness, the tacoma hands down. I can throw things in the bed and haul appliances and stuff from home depot without a worry. For offroading, it's fj all day. The 4runner has been hijacked by my wife and is officially a pavement princess. My son drives the tacoma and we swap when I need to make weekend hardware store runs.

I went with the 4runner. My dad's got a tacoma that I used a few times. The tacoma drives nicer. The 4runner is an old pig of a vehicle. The tacoma stops nicer, accelerates nicer, and just drives nicer in general. BUT, the 4runner is made better. The materials on the insider are nicer. My dad's interior feels much cheaper. The door panel is already starting to come off since there isn't a bolt behind the handle on the door interior, and its only 4 years old. The sound system on the base models are also WAY nicer on the 4runner. The tacoma also hasn't had the V6 engine and transmission that long, so it's not proven near as well as the 4runner. The engine and transmission have been the same since around 2006 I think. The 4.0 V6 is a million mile engine. That doesn't mean the tacoma is unreliable or not tough, its still a toyota, but the 4runner is a tad bit tougher, and mine tanked a 160 lbs deer straight on and still drove home with no issues. But it also depends on what you're going to use it for, and the difference in quality is minimal. Just make sure with the 4runner the tires are balanced by a good shop. If it isn't balanced, the steering wheel will wobble at higher speeds. If a shop balances it correctly, it won't happen

The Tacoma is the favorite in Hawaii! I’ve had 2 Tacoma’s, 2003 and a 2010. Sold both of them and got a nautical blue 2019 4runner. Rides better than the Tacoma for sure!! I also had 2, 87 Toyota’s pickups back in the day. Kinda miss the Tacoma for hauling to be honest.

The issue with the wobble is the fact that the wheels are lug centric wheels. When balancing, you need a flange plate adapter (Haweka is a respectable premium brand- it turns the hub centric balancer into lug centric.). You can't properly balance a lug centric wheel on a hub centric balancer that uses a cone. Toyota should cover this and make it more well known. Even certified Toyota techs don't talk about this. Then when mounting them, torque them (SLOWLY AND GRADUALLY) in a star pattern. Edited: with (of course) the wheels off the ground until you cant. You've heard this many times, but it is very important on these vehicles. It's not a rush job. Maybe look into it and make a video please. Really like the channel. It's come a long way. Thanks again for sharing

I have owned them both and loved them both. Great vehicles. I’ve owned the TRD 4Runner for a year and that would be my choice mainly because I don’t have many truck uses that I need a flatbed for. And I put a cap on the Tacoma so I could use it as a 4Runner. So, eventually I came to my senses and got the vehicle that is designed for the purposes that I use it for. Go figure, but the 4Runner is a better SUV than the Tacoma. Who would have thought. I wish I was independently wealthy as you are, then I’d have them both. 😢

You are exactly right on the 4runner steering wheel. Just bought mine over two weeks ago, and noticed some vibration going betwen 60-65, but then it gets better at 70 miles plus. Brought back to dealer, they did the tires rotation even though I asked for road force balance since some people recommend it, they said the vibration no long there, however im driving back home and notice its shaking a little bit again. I figured out its just the 4runner problem overall with bigger tires.

It's interesting that you prefer the Tacoma off-roading with the longer wheel base. I suppose for Florida trails that makes sense where you're probably off-roading flatter and at a higher speeds. But any type of crawling, steep or technical terrain, the shorter wheel base is awesome. You get a better breakover angle and departure angle in the 4runner. So if your looking for the slightly more capable/versatile off-road vehicle I'd choose the 4Runner. If your off-roading is Baha style, or mudding and also want the versatility of a truck the Tacoma has the advantage (and is still very good a other style of off-roading, just slightly worse at crawling and technical stuff). Both are great though. I have the 4Runner and my ex had a Tacoma. The interior space difference is pretty dramatic. The 4Runner feels like the inside of a proper truck, the Tacoma feels MUCH smaller inside. At 6' tall, I've been more comfortable road tripping my old Honda Civic then road tripping the Tacoma. I also like the 4runner without a sunroof, you get even more headroom.

Thanks for this video. I am retired and living in Northern VA. where we get some snow but not usually huge amounts. I own a 2015 Taco Limited and a 2017 Prius 4. Love them both but as a now single guy I really don't need both, especially since car insurance and personal property taxes keep going up. I like the truck to take to the landfill and carrying other large items and the Prius hatchback for everyday convenience. Here is my idea and I would like some feedback should anyone read this. I am thinking of selling both vehicles and using the cash to buy a new 4Runner while they still have the 4.0L V6 like in my Taco. I don't drive as much as when I was working so gas milage doesn't matter quite so much. I love the mpg the Prius gets but I think I don't drive enough to take full advantage of its gas savings. My Taco doesn't have the safety technology like the Prius or newer 4Runner have. As an older driver (72) I want all the safety tech I can afford. I like the 4Runner as it gives me the convenience of covered cargo space as in the Prius and it gives me most of the truck bed capabilities of the Taco. Any thoughts? Is this a crazy idea? I would love your feedback.

Picked up a low mile 2022 4Runner ORP a few days ago and my immediate 2 cents is: 4Runner feels like a truck and the Taco feels like a car. Mine was also built in japan and is super solid compared to past German cars I've owned. I was reading that the TAHARA Factory in Japan assembles 4Runners also assembles Land Cruisers and Lexus LXs. So depending on where you 4runner was assembled, build quality could vary.

My verdict goes to the Tacoma actually. The whole made in Japan thing doesn’t quite work cause the whole part supply network is very much the same, just the assembling and 9/10 the Tacoma has no issues. The 4R can be converted to a truck but its gonna be a two seater, while the back seats are small, the Tacoma retains the 5’ bed while still sits four. I also feel the partial C frame makes it easier to hose (may be a factor for salt belters). I appreciate the lean principle of interior room, I don’t need any more, the only gripe I got rid of my TRD OP was the sunroof, my head hits the ceiling. But now I may trade my 4R for a TRD Offroad regular Tacoma as I discovered the lack of sunroof gives me the same head room as the 4R with sun roof.
