In this video, I go over some of the things you should consider when shopping for a Toyota 4Runner or a Toyota Tacoma. A lot of individuals find themselves cross-shopping these two very popular Toyota off-road vehicles. Well, I was fortunate enough to own them both for a year, drive them daily, and really develop a proper opinion of both of them.

Hey Jon I have a question. Do you know how to fix the wobble you where talking about?. I have a 22 4Runner 4X4 and that wobble bothers me a lot. I’m thinking to trade mine for a 4x2 to solve the issue. Is that the only solution ? I already replaced de needle bearing for the bushing on the differential axle on drivers side. I saw some improvement but it still wobbles.

Have them both. The 4runner has way more versatility. You can sleep in the 4runner and if you have kids, access to a food cooler in the rear cargo area saves you from stopping to access the back. If I were single, I would take the Taco just cause I like trucks better.

I had both vehicles as well. For me, it came down to the rear suspension and the superiority of coil springs over leaves. The other major difference was the weight distribution in the forerunner making it a much better performer in the snow.

I test drove both and I can’t get over the small size of the the cab in the Tacoma. I honestly still want one with a stick someday but I was trading in my F-150 and needed a main vehicle and to me at 6’3, the 4runner is way more comfortable to drive. Now that I’ve had my 4runner a few months, I definitely made the right decision.

Good call! I am 5' 11" and bought a Tacoma many years ago in 2006 and found out within a few weeks (first trip longer than 25 miles) that the seating position was pure torture. I bought the truck for great reliability of course but it soured me on Toyotas for many years. I am, however, taking a very hard look at the 4 runner based on more interior room and the fact that it is still made entirely in Japan.

Great comparison. Of all the brands and models on the market the choice between a Tacoma or a 4Runner seems the most prevalent and sometimes difficult for folk to decide. We had a 2020 SR5 which was wonderful. We needed a pickup to haul stuff around, fill the back with mulch for the garden, haul lumber, etc. Recreationally as sea kayakers, campers, hikers, outdoor activities it’s perfect with a wealth of options to configure the bed for your needs. Just so much more practical. Rear passenger leg room is subjective and we would never make a decision for occasional passengers to feel more comfortable. If you have kids the room is fine. Utility, flexibility is the key. We didn’t want to deal with another large SUV for long trips or even around town. The Tacoma stayed planted, is more nimble, and was a comfortable long-distance driver. Otherwise we would have gone with a Subaru Outback instead. A natural selection and was perfect for our needs. Three (3) years later we traded it in recently for a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road with Predator package, right at the peak of used car prices. Even with the TRD upgrade from the SR5 we almost broke even, less than a $500 difference. Here's a tip on reducing the cost of a “higher model”. Don’t buy off the lot and pay for stuff you will never use or compromise on the color. Instead, sit down with your sales rep and order your Tacoma or 4Runner off of Toyota’s National Inventory. It arrived in 3 weeks. Why? Because the sales rep can sit down with you and DELETE packages or items you do not want and add others you want. The result is that you get a vehicle configured to your specific needs without unnecessary overhead. It brought the cost down to an equally equipped SR5 even including the Predator package which was discounted by Toyota at the time. We also got an additional $x thousand's discount from the dealership (largest sales volume in the SE region) and a couple freebies like hats and free break-in oil change, checkup at 750 miles independent of the regular free schedule. Timing and patience is everything, besides having a great dealership that is responsible, welcoming and knows you as a customer by name when you drop by is important to us. There is never any reason to pay retail or above for a 4Runner or Tacoma. Aside. For the 2022 we added a Pedal Commander. We had reservations, but my wife who always complained about the “sluggishness” loves it and drives faster than ever! With a pickup we added a gun rack for our hiking poles. BTW, if you have a 3D Printer there are hundreds of Tacoma designed parts and accessories for all generations to print for free and you can design your own using a free “maker” license from AutoDesk Fusion 360 CAD program. I recently designed a console insert for my handgun as an example. Search: www.stlfinder.com and www.thingiverse.com . There are many other sites to search.

4 runner all day man the cab space in the Tacoma was just entirely too small especially if your planning on or have a family. That’s one reason. Toyota dealership near me had my taco order in I sat for 7 months no answer with the wrong trans package installed. No remorse or even tried to come to an agreement with pricing once I went to another dealership and started looking at runners. They don’t care they just want your money. Then Aprs are through the roof right now I remember getting 2%s back in the day. Any ways buying the runner was a nightmare they went friendly and they weren’t knowledgeable about the runner with all questions I was asking. Just another job for the girl I was working with. Finally came to terms with them with what I WANTED out of the deal and we made a deal cut 5 k off the msrp of the pre installed packages which to be fair weren’t too bad, 3 things I would have had them taken off but I didn’t want to wait any longer I had already been waiting 7 months for a taco and they could have came back and said they cancelled it. Hedged my bets. But I did get the car at msrp and no mark ups except for the packages with 5k off for Toyota thon. The 4 runner is smoother, bigger, has more room for cargo and I feel the suspension is better. Yes it’s slower but you have to drive the speed limit in CO or they will screw u bad cops don’t play out here. The 3d print option is great I want to have my co worker make me a couple inserts for those weird cubbies that runner has

You are exactly right on the 4runner steering wheel. Just bought mine over two weeks ago, and noticed some vibration going betwen 60-65, but then it gets better at 70 miles plus. Brought back to dealer, they did the tires rotation even though I asked for road force balance since some people recommend it, they said the vibration no long there, however im driving back home and notice its shaking a little bit again. I figured out its just the 4runner problem overall with bigger tires.

There are so many advantages with the 4runner. I had a road trip 2 years ago to yellowstone, 4 people. I have an enclosed carrier on my hitch for other stuff. Used a 12v fridge and another battery and kept all our food fresh even during a night rest. All our stuff are safe inside even on rainy days and accesible. I've owned a 2007 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport with a 6spd manual for the last 11 years. I have 240,000 miles on it. It burns more gas than a f150 (15 city 18 highway) but it is extremely reliable. In it's life I have had to replace the wheel bearings, the clutch, rebuild the universal joint, and do the ball joints. It definitely doesn't have the amenities of a modern truck but if you need something to get you to wherever you need to go and back again it's perfect So far it's been a great investment.

Nice upload 👍🏻 Have owned both. First a 17 4Runner OR. It was a great vehicle but wasn’t the most practical (for us). Needed something easier for kayaking, landscaping & home projects/lumber. Tried to make it work with certain yakima attachments and while it did, times were a bit of a hassle, particularly when doing it solo. Tried a couple different sized trailers as well. If you don’t need to haul large/heavy items often, just end the hunt and get a 4Runner. Done. I ended up trading it for an 18 Tacoma TRD Pro manual. I wanted a bed but also wanted an off the lot, off road-ready mid sz truck. Not to mention It was actually tougher finding an OR trim in the mt/options I wanted, so I found a Pro. Really used the **** out of that bed too,as intended. It was so much easier loading and unloading things than the 4Runner. I didnt feel like I had to be so careful doing so either. The manual made it more fun to drive. But It still felt underpowered. I don’t think I would’ve gotten an auto Taco tbh. After years of ownership, it was serving me quite well. With that said, I was still never satisfied with the seating and lack of adjustment. Felt like I was too close to the floor. The driving position borderline sucked. Just awkward really. Longer trips weren’t very comfortable. And again, felt power was lacking. The mt did make it more usable. On the flip side, mpg suffered quite a bit. I just put up with it and adjusted. I know, gotta compromise. Honestly, because it I wasn’t completely satisfied, I felt I over paid. It was a great truck nonetheless and if or until it gets refreshed, it’s gone for now. I’ll probably get hate for this but whatever lol. Fast fwd a few yrs, I decided to check out the 3rd gen Frontier. Having owned a pathfinder in the past. Also know a couple people who own older gen Frontiers, so this helped with my decision as well. After 2 separate trips, spending several weeks researching and hrs in person with it, sitting, test driving etc, I ordered a Pro4x in Tactical Green. It was the same excitement as when I got my Pro, and then some. Modern yet still rugged looks. I find myself just staring at it. I get approached often by people asking about it. The zero gravity seats are absolutely incredible and so is the ride quality. Oh and the power. Its sooo appreciated. I do miss the manual at times. But this motor and 9spd actually make up for it. The led lights are awesome. I heard they were nice but damn do they light up the road. Make no mistake I have some gripes like any other vehicle. Wished ground clearance was higher. A factory lift option would be cool. No mt option, manual rear window slider, wheel options are just ok. aftermarket support is nothing like Toyota. Minor things I suppose.. I still miss my Pro at times. The taco community sometimes too. Guys, it’s ok to buy a different brand. You’ll be fine lol. Buying a vehicle is not a death sentence. You want to sell it, sell it. Want to buy, buy it. Let’s see what the next gen like but for now, loving the Pro4x, 27k mi both on/offroad & counting.

For me, it's the comfort in the 4runner, the rear coils over leaf springs, the seating position, and more room, and my number one for why I would pick my 4runner over my Tacoma is the J-shift. I’ve owned both and ultimately have kept and owned my 2012 TE 4runner with KDSS for 10 solid years now. For room, comfort, and solid build quality you can not go wrong with 4runner. If you need a truck buy a Tundra!

I agree totally. In the end the Tac was too small for our needs. So, we traded it in for an Ford F-450, and added a 4R. Now the wife can pack as much stuff as she wants into the big dually and I only have to go to Costco once every other month! And, we have the 4R for off-roading! Win win. 😃

You could make like an HD 4Runner with the Taco. If you get the large cab and get a topper on the bed, you have the same or more cargo room as a 4Runner BUT without the dirtiness inside the vehicle.

I can only afford one. So I choose the tacoma for multipurpose. Easy to carry some oversized things like furniture etc. Easy to get things out when I go camping with kids and I don’t have to unload everything from the top or back just to get something from the bottom. SUV is just pain in the buttt when you have so much stuff to bring and you have to unload everything.

I feel the 4Runner would be better off road due to less wheelbase and tighter turn radius. Also, the Tacoma has rear c-channel frame for better off road articulation while 4Runner has fully boxed frame for more rigidity. Though KDSS is available in 4Runner. Great video and thank you for saying that Tacoma has leather seats while 4Runner has softex. Not many people know that.

Great video - I have an older Tacoma (2008 TRD Off road w/ JBL) that I will keep, I love it. (my son will inherit it.) So I am right now looking at the 4Runner. I'm older, will do less off roading, and wanted something different, maybe a little more comfortable to drive... So I decided Ill be putting a 2023 Off Road Premium on order Monday. Just bummed of all things, why doesn't Toyota offer the JBL system in the off Road Premium!!?? (rhetorical) dumbest thing ever to only offer it in the TRD Pro and Limited!?. (ridiculous really..) Ok with that off my chest, I have one question for you, I saw you had a sort of (Canvas - looking) set of covers in the back of your 4runner. It seemed to be custom fit covering the rear seat backs and sliding rear deck. What kit is that? Id like something similar for my 4 runner, but all the weathertec - style rubber mats just dont do it for me in this area.. Can you please let us know? Thanks!..

Two happy years with a 4Runner TRD Pro. If I was still riding motorcycles off road then I would have bought the Tacoma. Always surprised how much stuff I can fit into the back of the 4Runner with the passenger seats folded down. Yes it has gotten scratched up quite a bit inside. Not often I hear the 4Runner described as a mall crawler:) Nice review though.

As a Tacoma owner, I can say I LOVE my truck, but I wouldn't mind getting a 4Runner for my next vehicle, IF I ever buy anything else. I just retired and only have 32 thousand on my 2018, and literally only drive maybe seventy to eighty miles a week, so I plan on dying with the truck. Still, I would like one but the prices are a bit out there ....... as usual Jon, GREAT video.

I had both, sold my tacoma for a 4runner. i liked my tacoma so much more. more tech and the utility of having a bed is unbeatable. especially for people like me who go camping alot and use the bed for hauling wood and what not. 4 runner has a bit more cab room but its not enough to justify the switch. i now have a silverado but thats just my 2 cents. if torn between the two, Go tacoma.

2015 4Runner, LTD, 180k miles. Only gripe is the doorlock actuators do not last long, on my third driver side and second passenger side, and neither currently work. One of the parking sonar nodules does not work. I have a bearing that needs to be replaced as well. However it pretty much drives exactly the same way as when I drove it off the lot.

I have owned them both and loved them both. Great vehicles. I’ve owned the TRD 4Runner for a year and that would be my choice mainly because I don’t have many truck uses that I need a flatbed for. And I put a cap on the Tacoma so I could use it as a 4Runner. So, eventually I came to my senses and got the vehicle that is designed for the purposes that I use it for. Go figure, but the 4Runner is a better SUV than the Tacoma. Who would have thought. I wish I was independently wealthy as you are, then I’d have them both. 😢

Short story... I own 2010 4runner and 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road. I prefer 4runner . I use the tacoma for truck stuff but use the 4runner more often because larger interior and much more comfortable to drive. Also when off roading the 4runner has larger wheels/tires and really enjoys the rough terrain with coil rear shocks. Either way cant go wrong
