I purchased a new Bacelona red 4runner, off road premium, in January. I wanted something with proven reliability. It has all the technology I require. I don't go off road, I live in the snow belt, east coast. I don't drive much anymore, I'm handicapped. I started driving in 1959, in England, at the age of 15. People complain about gas mileage, it does not make much sense to me, most drivers pass me doing 80 mph, on roads with a 55 mph speed limit. Driving off road, further reduces the mpg, considerably. I drive 5 mph over the posted speed limit. My journey last Saturday was 74 miles, my mpg average was 22.6 mpg, no complaints here.

It doesn’t matter if the consumer is right or wrong. If they think the v6 is better, they won’t buy the new 4 cylinder, which will only harm Toyota. The consumer will just move to a different company or stick to their old 4Runners. That is the gamble that Toyota is taking.

Most of the time consumers don't know what they want and they need some herding. The turbo four prolly has 30% fewer moving parts to wear out and fail. And it won’t need to rev high for much of its life. Turbocharging is decades old technology, used in most commercial vehicles. Toyota could have messed it up but I suspect the new power train will be fine.

That having been said I just purchased a low mileage used ‘21 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium for half the price of what the new ‘25 TRD Pro will cost (leaving plenty in the budget for some light off road mods) and a few years down the line once the new 6th gen turbos have proven themselves to be reliable/have the bugs worked out might consider upgrading. Fun Fact:😢 A service writer at Toyota tried to convince me that 10,000 miles interval oil changes are better for the life of an engine on synthetic oil (Not even sure if Toyota dealerships use semi or full synthetic oil). Toyota doesn't care about the reliability anymore just based on their service intervals. EPA, development and research, and count on the brand to push a product out the door. I have nothing against the hybrid system or the 4cyl engine. It's the hybrid battery and the turbo I'm concerned about. Short term ownership shouldn't be a problem but good luck after 100,000 miles.🙄 And I change my oil every 5,000 miles on full synthetic. 🤓

Which 5th gen year and trim for best ride ( get a little dirty) if not a 2024?
@vex-nh
@vex-nh 19 күн бұрын
I'm biased since I own a 5th gen, but I'd still choose the 5th gen. You get a flat floor and rear seats that fold flat, versus the hybrid battery hump if you're going for a Pro or the new Trailhunter. It's a shame you can't spec those without the hybrid setup. Personally, I find the interior of the 5th gen more appealing than the new one. More power is always nice, but you're going from a very reliable, basic V6 to a much more complicated 4 banger with turbo and hybrid. It just doesn't fit with what a lot of us think of as a 4Runner. Something reliable and offroad capable but without a bunch of extra complexity that it doesn't need.

Have a 2014 5th gen, love it. Needs an update and some decent fuel economy. Will wait a bit but will probably get a later 2025. Was going to wait for the 2026. With the Tacoma and Land Cruiser already out there being basically the same platform, they will get most of the new car teething problems sorted out. I'm tired of waiting...
@nashbridges120
@nashbridges120 19 күн бұрын
One argument for waiting is that the present generation did pretty poorly in both the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests. More modern Toyota/Lexus designs have done uniformly well, so it seems likely that this new platform will as well. If you plan to transport family, this may matter to some. Matters to me!

I’ve never heard anything good about a turbo as far as long term reliability. 5th Gens are the last TRUE Toyotas. Look at the junk show the new Tundra is and that pitiful axle snap on your Tacoma. And, they are 15,000 more??? 😳. I love Toyotas and have owned them since 1992. I also own two Celicas (90 and 93). Sadly, Toyota is making a mistake with these Turbos.

When I bought my 4Runner in 2020, I searched over 150 miles and found 2 models I liked, Barcelona Red and Nautical Blue. The dealerships were over 1 1/2 hours away. Got the blue one, an SR5 Premium. I was looking for a replacement work truck last fall, with a 6.5' bed and room for 5 adults. Wow I got lucky to find the trim and model I wanted. The color was a dark red (Magma) metallic on a 2020 F150 Lariat. Next closest vehicles were over 1000 miles away for the trim and bed size I wanted.

I am also very tired of not having bright color choices. It's interesting, I just listened to a business podcast talking about this and a lot of people credit silver and white becoming popular because of Apple in the 2000s, and gaining popularity. I personally do like gray, but I also love a good blue or green. The podcast interviewed a woman from Subaru, and apparently their new blue color is more popular than silver and black, which is maybe a sign of turning around. Secondly, as much as the outgoing generation is reliable, I personally didn't find it comfortable. I also don't believe in buying the first model year of any new generation. The best is always to buy the sweet spot. Lastly, it's sad Toyota didn't do any cool trims or colors for the last generation. The green, blue and red they've done in the past were pretty cool. Especially the voodoo blue!

the 2025 4Runner is essentially a Tacoma with a wagon, as everyone predicted. I was just offered a 2024 TRD Pro for something like 3k UNDER the MSRP, which makes me think there is cash from Toyota for the dealers to get rid of inventory; the days of charging premiuns appear to be gone. I am strongly leaning towards it... I had the opportunity to drive a Ford Bronco with the top removed in the NC Outer Banks and I have to say I wish Toyota had made that an option for the 2025 4 Runner and had also placed an engine capable of towing 7000-8000 lbs. Yes, I know I can get the LandCruiser but that bad boy is going for $100k these days...

Toyota started pushing turbocharged engines, not because they want to improve the engine, but to comply with some market emission policies and avoid paying penalties. So they are forced to do it, should they have the option, they will keep the good old fully tested reliable engines. But the new ones, might be better than the old ones, as Toyota knows very well how to make a good engine, I guess only time will answer your question.

I think that the 6th generation will likely be reliable… just based on Toyota’s track record. Decades making hybrids and Turbo-diesels… Maybe there will be some teething, but hopefully they will work most out through the Tacoma rollout. My main concern is that the price increase in Tacomas is a prelude to what 4Runner pricing will be… where prices literally went up one trim level or 25%! I can easily see an 2025 6th gen SR5 being the price of the 5th gen TRD off road or more…. Add the dealer markups and a Trailhunter maybe closer tho the Lexus GX550 in price. I’ve seen in reviews that the 4Runner platform is Land Cruiser 250 from the b pillar back and Tacoma from the b pillar forward. Will it play nice? Maybe I’m over-reving remembering the Lexus RC - front clip of a GS bolted to an IS… which was a little compromised. So I ended up buying a CPO ‘23 TRD ORP. It’s a known quantity, I like tinkering and less tech was kind of a plus for me (it’s more techie than my S2000, so I’m happy enough).

@@ALMX5DP I see more than a few naturally aspirated vehicles for sale from that era…the proof is in the pudding. Ask any mechanic or engineer and they’ll tell you the same thing-naturally aspirated port injected engines are under far less stress and will not experience the valve build up that turbo direct injected engines experience. They are under far less pressure and they have far less cooling and electrical systems to fail. More complication, more stress and pressure, more electronics all equals more things to go wrong and more wear and tear. I believe in Toyota and I do think they know how to engineer these new engines to be reliable but I am also not delusional, I am a realist and cannot deny all the facts I just presented. I am not hating on Toyota in fact I will most likely be buying the new 4runner lol but I don’t keep my vehicles longer than 5 years so I don’t particularly care as much as folks who do plan to keep their cars for the long haul. @ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 19 күн бұрын
@@Jay-bw3fl I meant few as in few model types, not mere sale count. Sure turbocharged vehicles do inject boost pressure into the cylinders, but if the engines are engineered with that approach in mind it's not a big difference to other engine designs. And especially with an inline 4 cylinder, there is technically less complexity than a V configuration turbocharged engine and even potentially less than an NA V engine being inline engines have half the valvetrain and moving parts therein. I am also a realist and know that everything modern may not last as long as something older, heck an aircooled VW engine is about as basic as it can get and will run forever with a screwdriver and single box wrench. But in terms of todays vehicles and expectations for power, performance, efficiency and comfort, there really isnt much in it for most people who dont care for their cars to last more than 15-20 years.

It looks like a ton of cargo room was lost in the 2025, just like when the Sequoia went hybrid it lost almost 25% of it's cargo space. Plus you have a higher floor and the rear seats now fold no where near flat. Not only that but I expect the TRD Pro trim to be pushing $70k with destination fees etc. If that sounds crazy, remember the TRD Pro 24' Tacoma is $66k once you add in destination fees, and you know there's no way the 25' 4 Runner is going to be cheaper than the Tacoma.

I'd still lean towards the old gen. Simplicity and proven drivetrain (not to mention price!) are big for me. While I think the exterior looks of the new gen are "good" (not great), I think the old gen looks good too. The interior of the new gen really is kind of a negative for me as well. It's so overdone and so busy looking. I usually like bigger screens but this one sticks up above the dash, which I am not fond of. Something that would potentially lure me to the new gen could be the MPG. 16mpg out of the old gen is rather bad. I'd much rather go with a V8 and get more power and the same mileage. If the new one gets mid 20's that's huge. Overall, unless driving a new gen just blows me away, I'll stick with the old gen.
