Thanks for the very interesting review of the Audi A1. I ordered mine in October of 2018 when there were only two models available, the SE which is effectively the Technic and the Sport. I chose the Sport as Cruise Control and Electric Folding Mirrors were included. Strangely enough I have found the safety equipment not to be up to the job. Lane Departure is a positive danger on B or poorly marked roads. Only useful on motorways. Tyre Pressure Monitoring is far too sensitive and can be set off due to potholes in the road while Main Beam Assist is too slow in its activation. The Digital Dashboard is first class with all the information you need and is fully digital, not like the Polo or Skoda equivalents which are digital with an analogue speedometer display. Driving with the sun in front causes the display to brighten considerably. Fabulous! The scratchy hard plastics don't bother me. Easy to clean if required. Compared with the MINI, I've had three MINIs - Mk1 2 & 3 going back to 2003 but to me MINI has now lost the plot. Before I bought the A1 I 'Designed my own MINI', a 5 door Cooper. Exciting colours? Two grey and a silver which looks grey in a certain light. Which younger generation are they appealing to, the deceased? Don't forget the greed in now charging for solid colours. I wanted a Spare Wheel & Tyre. No longer available - use Runflats. Why pay extra for a poorer ride? I also wanted Electric Folding Mirrors. That'll be an extra £1600. I know the pack includes other options but realistically if you cannot park a MINI without the self-park option, you really should give up driving. Yes, MINI is nippy with great handling and fun to drive. The Electrically Heated Windscreen option is fabulous at clearing the screen in summer and frost in winter. The wing mirrors are a good size too but the dipping rear view mirror is poor while the auto one doesn't work well in poor lighting and rain. The Mk3 gearbox is too easy to shift into reverse instead of 1st and of course the perennial problem of adding low profile tyres just ruins the ride. The A1 just feels like a grown up car. The Audi A1 is more fuel efficient while surprisingly quick during overtaking , quieter and at the end of three years will be worth more than the MINI.

It's very... well... 'sensible' shall we say. A way of getting from A to B that beats walking but no more exciting than the local bus. May feel quality but Audi's plummeting reliability survey ranking over the last five years is a bit of a worry. Here in Au used Audi's are attractive as they depreciate faster than a Mugabe Zimbabwe dollar.

As a Audi A1 2022 owner i must say that this is a very nice car. I bought it second hand for 16.000 euro's. It had loads of extra's attached to it. My climate regulation is now also digital and comes with temperature indiciations so u can set it to your optimal temperature. Adjustable by 0,5 Celsius each tick. I did also get parking sensors, although it is not visible on the infotainment screen (like the previous Audi version from 2010) what area of the car is bumping into something. Other than that, the cheap plastic mentioned here got replaced by more luxurious feeling versions that are colloured alongside the rest of the interior. Another nice addition is the arm rest above the handbreak that also hold more space to put small stuff inside. (Keys, chewing gum etc.). It does feel a wee bit slow in the early revs but holds up quite nice once the turbo kicks in. Fuel wise its a super nice car to maintain, i can easily cruise around 750km's. If i drive 80-100 km roads only that can extend to 780-800 km's per full tank. For the high price u pay for relatively no extra's i would not get this car new but a second hand option is highly recommandable

Totally agree with you about the handbrake. In the old days you would buy a new cable for £12 and change it yourself. For an Audi A6 you are looking at £600 plus for the kit, reprogramming the computer for it to talk to the other ECUs.

Great review as always! My girlfriend has the 2.0 (40 tfsi) competition spec, great car fun and engaging to drive. We test drove back to back with the Mini cooper S, they feel very similar power wise, the mini handles flatter but has a harsh ride whereas the A1 is a bit softer and easier to live with. I jump at any chance to drive her car over my A6 (40 tdi) as its much more fun than piloting my (what feels like) cruise ship size saloon

Love it, but I would defo go for the 4 pot 1.5, as I wouldn't want to be revving the bollocks off it everywhere I go. I love the interior too, and can forgive the little bits of scratchy plastic. The interior space is great, although I wish it was available in a 3 door. But all in all, it is typically German, and conservatively styled, which is right up my street. It is not trying to be something that it is not. So I would fefinitely have one.

Hi Matt, just to explain the servicing costs at main dealers, all the manufacturers I have worked for have incentivised dealers to offer significantly reduced rates for cars that are out of warranty to keep their business in the network. That's why older cars tend to have such competitive pricing for maintenance work and the newer stuff doesn't given it's likely to stay in the network anyway given the manufacturer's warranty. Great review as always though!

I never knew till you mentioned the fact that Audi A1 was classed as a Sportback, as I believed that was designated to the A3 onwards. So see Matt we learn something new every time we tune in - not that I liked the A1 but then I drove an A3 Petrol and a diesel 1.8 TDI, so that was my experience of Audi's as after that prices seem to rocket upwards at our local dealership.

I have the 1.5 L 2020 model and I would suggest it's the engine to go for - it's quick and you can get nearly 50mpg on the motorway. I'm loving it, although price wise they are expensive. I would also suggest the automatic is worth a try - the changes are very smooth - it's only a little jerky at very low speeds on rough paths.
@kaferere
@kaferere 3 ай бұрын
The jerkiness is a design fault and Audi are telling people it's normal - it's not, and can be a precursor to failure at around about 25,000 miles. The only thing that will cure it is a new clutch pack, the A1 is probably going to be the target of a class action lawsuit, thousands of very unhappy customers.

Thanks for the upload Matt; I enjoyed this as always. I can't understand though why you describe the A1 as a "City Car"; for me it is more a "Small Hatchback" like a Fiesta or Corsa size car. A city car is surely an UP! or equivalent(?). That aside the New A1 is a mixed bag. Lovely dash and display (I love tech) but the manual handbrake looks a tad out of place, the price is extortionate and the lack of a diesel orE model makes no sense. I love value and the A1 offers the square root of Jack so I wouldn't have one personally.

Then you have the range topper 40 4 4 cylinder 2.0 litre engine making 197 bhp. Traded down from an A3 with a 1.4 TFSI engine and this 30 A1 with the 1.0 litre engine feels just as quick. We also have an SQ5 3.0 TFSI too - that’s a beast!

Great video, very enjoyable. I agree with the small, medium, large EVs future. Not at all sure that this offers anything over a Skoda Fabia for city driving, just the badge on wheels thing that sniffy folk need to have. No diesels anywhere now, we will be lucky to have petrols soon. (BTW I reckon you put 5 rings on a Lada people would buy it.) How are the 200 bhp faster versions going to work given the speed limiting stuff coming in next year? You can go really fast up to the local limit and have the satisfaction that you are getting to your destination about 6 seconds faster than the Dacia Sandero behind you. The world is going to pot...

Great videos, I enjoy watching them! Just a word on the engines... I've used this engine in a polo and a 1.5 tfsi in a Seat Ateca for some considerable time. I can honestly say they are not an economical engine. The polo I had to thrash everywhere as it had no torque or power so you ended up using loads of fuel so it was pointless. The Seat with the 1.5 engine is slightly better with a lot of low down torque off the mark. It's a 7 speed dsg which you would think is eco but I'm getting an average 38mpg over 9k miles of ownership. That's not great for something with cylinder deactivation also. I still think mid size Diesel engine is best for economy all round. These small petrol engines don't offer any economy gains in my opinion.

I had the older 1.4l in a Škoda Octavia and I managed to get around 50 mpg/ UK without even cylinder deactivation

My fiesta 1.0 turbo 3 cyl fiesta puts out 123bhp. Why are audi so far behind, or is there a higher power output version of the same engine?

Yes I don’t get Audi’s model rebranding system either. Prefer the older A1 with the “mini R8” headlights in S-Line trim.

I think this would look better in a brighter colour especially the interior although well designed. Less said about the badging system though 🤔

If you think this is slow try the non turbo version. I've had new polos as courtesy cars from vw when my car was in for a service. The 80bhp 1 litre non turbo was slow on a completely different level there absolutely no power whatsoever. The turbo one only had another 10bhp but thanks to the turbo it had soo much more torque about 70 ft lbs to about 130 ft lbs if I remember right. Not fast by any means but acceptable if you drive around town in a sensible matter. If I ever lost my mind and bought a 1 litre turbo I would book it in for a remap straight away

I have a 2020 polo with the exact same engine. Out of curiousity in this day and age do 3cyl last almost as long as 4 in terms of milage? And are there any inherent problems with this engine?

I always thought the new engine badging system was a fresh look at look how to gauge the cars power, as litreage doesn't apply theses days as you can get a 2.0 Litre that will match a 6.2 in terms of BHP. Maybe more accurate like a BMW 118i isn't a 1.8 now etc. Audi have gone for power bands like the 35 will produce between such and such KW/BHP

For those who want a small car with an upmarket feel the A1 is a strong contender and like most Audi's it has a nice interior. I wonder how long a little engine like this will last if you have to rev its nuts off to get it to go! I would definitely want a larger engine. Audi's use of numbers makes no sense at all perhaps its some sort of enigma code 😂

Its the same engine you can find in A3 1.0 and Q2 1.0. Plenty of power IMHO.

I have the Audi A1 20 plate , 35tfsi. Just done about 22,000 miles from new . I am in London . Is it worth me trading this for the 2024 plate ? Don’t the smaller engines feel slow ?
