Yamaha NS-1000's! My favorite sounding loudspeaker overall; not just Yamaha. It's my daily driver, and I'm listening to this video on them now. I can't recommend them enough. Crisp tight base from a sealed 12", and remarkable mids, and highs that don't break down when you push them. They still hold up well since the tight bass leaves room for a modern subwoofer's range in both music or home theater. I am biased, though. I grew up listening to music and film on my father's pair of NS-1000's.

This one's easy. Back in the day I had a pair of S-4115H utility speakers that I used for home listening, mobile DJ, and friends parties when their parents were out of town. Although they couldn't play as loud as my Altec 846's, they had a smoother mid range, and were easier to move around on their built in casters. I don't know how long they were in production, but Yamaha sold a zillion of these things and if you've ever been on a carnival midway ride in the 70's, 80's or even 90's, it's probably what was barking out the sound track or announcements. To this day I still run across the odd forum thread about someone using them in their home hi-fi system with a pair of tube amps, which is kind of cool. On a more serious note, the NS-1000 and NS-690 were really nice speakers both sonically, and cosmetically. (The rosewood version of the NS-1000 was stunning)

Thanks for this. I got a pair being delivered Tuesday. £186 from Amazon. I’m busy renovating a music room at home and these fit the bill nicely as a Zone B set of speakers to run off my Yamaha RX-A880 receiver that’s in the living room. The room isn’t big so I don’t need to turn the volume up loud. They meet the criteria and won’t break the bank. Besides, I’d rather have these than a pair of book shelf speakers.

I view a lot of these online audio review channels. They are good but they are always one persons opinion. I love the fact that you both have an opinion here and you are both accepting of each others views. It doesn't matter what I think of these speakers. you have shown in this video what I believe is the most important thing with choosing your home audio. Not everyone likes the same sound from their audio products. If they did there would be 1 amplifier 1 pair of speakers and so on. I have had many speakers/amplifiers/turntables etc. over the years that I have loved but friends of mine have not. As I get older I realised that it wasn't about what other people liked but about what I liked. Your videos give people a good idea of sound and build quality so they can go out and listen to the products with a good idea of what to expect. Please keep providing us with these very informative and entertaining videos.

A friend loaned me a pair of Yamaha Studio Monitors, about 30 years ago. One night I was playing them and I started falling asleep, when the bells started playing on the Dark Side of the Moon album I thought they were in the room. I jumped up. Maybe 12 inch tall monitors about 5 inch woofers. Do not remember the model, had white woofers, extremely clear sounding speakers. Think model started with 'NS' . Fantastic. Thanks for another great review.

They likely won’t (a lot of brands don’t comment) which is fine. I don’t think Yamaha has to comment as I’m sure they’re well aware of this product’s potential shortcomings. It’s a budget speaker, but maybe one that was manufactured just a little too cheaply.

Thanks A R! I enjoy loking at your videos. When it comes to cheap speakers I can recommed Heco Victa Prime 702. I was thinking to buy Yamaha, but I got theese very cheap (new). I bought them whitout listening first. They surprised me very much. Sounds good with all kinds of music. Nice and good building quality. German brand but probably made in china. Only bad thing is the feeds or spikes. But for that price You cannot expect super quality on everything. So if You have the chance to listen to them, give them a chance.

Loved the Yamaha conversation. Just started watching your channel and learning about what's going on in the audio world the last... ahem... four decades. My Harmon Kardon 230A based system has slowly morphed as things wore out, into a Yamaha TSR 700 receiver driving a Yamaha NS-AP4400 7.1 speaker set. I enjoy the sound of my system (maybe because I no longer blast music and my hearing isn't what it used to be) but I do wonder what modern speakers my Yamahas are equivalent to. Any ideas anyone?

Sometimes the grain/sand sound that can be heard in some (not all) speakers & tweeters is do to the crossover component choices & design. In some cases simply replacing the tweeter electrolytic capacitors in the crossover with quality polypropylene type of the same value will give & smoother/hi-res sound in the top end without actually changing the frequently response. I do this with most speakers i have owned in the past 25 years as a studio sound engineer & electronic repair tech... including some yamaha's (ns-777's). Also, replacing things on a component level may not be for everyone, but it is also a great tool to develop your hearing for the very fine sonic differences. Thanks & love your reviews 👍

Decade old NS-777 large towers with 3-way drivers has super clear not terribly forward tweeters and decent tight low end. Cabinets are hollow but heavy at 53lbs each. Gawdy dated silver finish surrounding the cones beg you to keep the grills on. $400 new, goodwill specials at $60.

Hello, great review Andrew 🙂👍, I'm looking to purchase some new floorstanders, will you be reviewing the Fyne Audio f302 or f303, on paper they say the have a claimed frequency range of 32hz-28000 and have many hifi industry accolades, they appears to be the ultimate all-rounders on paper atleast, the others on my shortlist are Wharfedale diamond's 12.3, Q-Aocustics 3050i and my wild card is Wharfedale Evo 4.3, I like all music except for Thrash Metal. Have a great day 🙂👍.

Hi! Great video as always 😊 I have been in the planingface for a future DIY big home theatre setup (9.12.6, total power: 79000wRMS, total cost with projector, screen, seating, audio and cables is "for now" around $66666) but have had some challenges when it comes to choosing the right amps. I will need to use power amplifiers, as the speakers is going to have a true RMS rating of 2000w+ pr. speaker and i want to be able to push them to pretty high levels and be able to play at lower levels with minimum distortion. The three brands of amps I have in mind is Crown, Powersoft and Lab Gruppen. The one that I have landed on for now, is the Crown DCi 4|2400N for the mains and surrounds. The reason that I am writing this to you, is because I would love to see a comparison of more PA style amps from a sound quality aspect. SQ is going to be an important part of the system, and it is also going to be used quite a lot for two channel listening.I think quite a lot of people would love to see something like this form you, and would find it very interesting! Just the aspect of finding a PA style amp that rivals the famous budget XLS DriveCore in a setting when you have speakers that take alot of power to really open up would be interesting and give more purpose to a video like this 🙂

I know this channel is more geared towards new gear, but I really enjoyed when you reviewed the vintage receiver. With that in mind I would love to hear your thoughts on Yamaha's NS-1000Ms. I have a pair and love them, but only when properly powered and placed, but when you get it right!!!

@@andrewrobinsonreviews The Model 5s blow the Kendalls away. I don't really like the way my Kendalls sound. But they do one thing that most other loud speaker towers do not. I find it magical at its price point.

Nice, incisive take (along with Kristi's vital counterpoint). Recently bought Sony's SS-CS3s and like them a lot (certainly *not* the highest-end speaker I've owned...long story there), and I hope you get a chance to review them (I know you tried the bookshelf version, and came away feeling so-so about them). Favorite Yamaha speaker? Their old NS-10M studio monitors weren't bad.

Now, here is a nice subject for a future video, you said in the video speaking about the Fluance speakers: "provided you pair them with an amplifier that can properly control their built-in 8" subwoofers" That would be a great subject to treat in a video, how do you determine if an amplifier can do that etc.. Not just for the Fluance but in general, it would a great informational/tutorial video I assume (PS: I did rewatch the Fluance speakers review to make sure and you didn't mention this in that one) Thanks

How does your partner not kill you for those face expressions :D - Love your videos and bought the S809s back in spring, with bookshelves as surrounds and a bronze w10 sub (I ditched the center after watching Z-reviews center video and couldn't be happier with them except for saving for the ATM modules :) (Receiver is Denon X1600H)

Yamaha NS-1000[x] .. Bought a pair in 1981 in Iwakuni, Japan, MCAS PX .. (I believe $250 a pair / ~$400 a speaker today) Lasted me (with only one tweeter replacement after ~10 years) to Jan 2020 when lost in a storage theft .. Paired them with a surround package in 1995 (1sub, 2 rear, 2 side, 1 center) to give me a 7.2 system .. Total life of ~40 years of listening bliss!

Thanks Andrew, I appreciate your honest review. The 'famous' Yamaha studio monitors are the NS10's I believe...used in many recording studios around the world, personally I've always thought of the Yamaha brand in general, as a bit 'bright' sounding or "digital-ish''.. lacking warmth & real 'feel', although I know they make fantastic equipment, it wouldn't be my first choice. Anyways, just my 2 cents worth. Cheers 🤘
