The original ToeJam & Earl is my favorite game of all time. I fucking love the new game! Beat it about 7x so far, highest character level i got was Cool Cat. After a few more play throughs i think i'll take on hard mode.

I managed to reach Funklord! It really kind of requires that you maximize your points, amp any Promotion presents and use them later on, search out everything you can, open almost ALL your presents, even the bad ones, but trying to minimize their effects. (Don't open randomizers, Total Bummer, Unidentify or anything like that though.) Map out levels, use Telephones (esp amped) and Uncover Map presents for extra points, and so on. You can turn extra money into more points by buying cheap presents at mailboxes and (I think) sushi, which counts as a present. Even doing most of this, I barely hit Funklord before winning the game.

For anyone who hasn't noticed or been exposed to both, the music and attitude in TJ&E is heavily inspired by Parliament's Mothership Connection album. To the point where some of it was certainly directly lifted. It's pretty striking. And yes, they definitely went hard on the Mothership connection influence. They especially pretty much addressed that influence around the time of the 3rd game, the last time the development duo was together on the series. The character Lamont really channeled Lollipop-Man, the Long-Haired sucker, with his vocals. (Yes, I played the 3rd game, and oddly enough it would have been the most awesome 3rd person take on the first game if only they didn't nerf some of the enemies (especially the dentist) to the point that the entire game got too easy). And killing the difficulty kind of killed a good bit of overall fun and any true replay-ability of that game. Kind of a shame given that the sensation of using the Spring Shoes in the 3rd game was absolutely wonderful. Still, this new game is a fantastic re-imagining of the the original game, back more to its 2D roots.

Thanks for the honest review I've been on the fence about buying this game. I try to avoid buying digital so when I saw this I wasn't sure I should be spending (around) $40. I never had a Genesis so I never played this but I might just go ahead and get it. I LOVED Katamari and never had it either so maybe I'll really like this too. Thanks again!

Just found out about this game. My brother and I were HUGE fans of the original on Genesis. The gameplay and level system was so unique and fun. Learning to fall on different parts of levels to discover secret areas on levels below it. All the hilarious enemies and power ups. Every TJ&E game since hasn’t captured the magic of the first and my gut on this one doesn’t love the art style. Wish they would have done sprites rather than this weird mashup of 3D/2D. It doesn’t feel cohesive or bring back the nostalgia like other games have been able to do with updating graphics to a modern take on retro games. I could be wrong and definitely would want to play this. Looks like it’s wicked expensive now, especially since I’m a person that only buys games on physical releases.

Loved the original, remember as a kid watching my brother play it for hours in the 90’s and eventually getting into it myself. Predownloaded this one on switch as soon as I heard about it and preordered the collectors edition on Limited Run. So far it’s lived up to my expectations, loving it!

Toe-Jam and Earl was so awesome. So many childhood memories. Loved it so much. I believe it was an underdog title. I kinda enjoyed the side scrolling. But prefered the original. The Xbox version was really good and really enjoyed the third installment. And now with back in the Grove, I'm so hyped for it that I'm waiting to get paid. I can't wait to play this with my brother. Haha. So much fun.

The last time I played ToeJam & Earl was back in the early 2000s as a kid, and I really enjoyed it. I'm so glad that the franchise has been brought back to life. I recently picked up ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove from the Switch eShop, and it's still just as fun and enjoyable as I remember. It's definitely worth the purchase and definitely worth playing.

Good review. I did a first Impressions video but didn't get to experience the online co op or a few other things that you did. I thought this game might be tedious, but it really is a fun game and for $20 it's the perfect price.

I played a lot of the original Toe Jam and Earl, it was a weird one but fun with the two player co-op. Unfortunately, I doubt i will buy this game. In the original Toejam and Earl it took a lot longer to fall off edges and jump into the water. Gave you plenty of chances to avoid it. That's my biggest gripe with the game, it's so quick now. If you have friends to play with it's an absolute blast even though it's a fairly simple game. I played so much of this way back when it came out on genesis and amazingly the gameplay holds up.

You should get you a surround sound reciever or even just a stereo reciever u can use it as video switcher plus have awesome sound every room in my house has a reciever in it i find them in thrift stores for like 10 bux, i found a 70s marantz reciever otherday for 30 in a local thrift thing sells for 700 800 bux on the bay but idk if ima sell it

I'm pretty sure your character is level 1 when you join games further in to prevent you from just waiting around in the online lobby, joining a game right near the end, and just easily farming unlockables.

I still play this on emulators! The only reason I didn't like the game was because it got too hard and there was no way to save, but now, as far as saving goes, that's no longer an issue

Wow. Thanks for this review RGT. I was in the exact same perspective as you with this series (not really understanding what the deal with this game was as a kid and not really impressed with the games on the Genesis collection). This game seems what it should have been but couldn't due to limitations at the time. I am considering getting it, but one question. Is it really 4 player local coop? The description on the website said 2 players local and 4 players online.
