TOEJAM AND EARL! Funk yeah! This was my jam growing up, easily in my top 10 favourite games of all time (although I do confess that nostalgia definitely plays a factor there). The only other game that comes close on the Genesis is Shadowrun.

As great as ToeJam & Earl is, it’s a shame that even obscure (well, I’m sure these games are popular in their own right, but underrated when compared to Sonic & Nintendo, mainly Mario) games like the TJ&E games have more recognition than games that were SUPPOSED to be main Pac-Man games when there really hasn’t been a lot (the Pac-Man World games). Yep, that’s right. Pac-Man is a video game that while some people are aware that it is a franchise, people normally only think of the franchise as Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures (to a lesser extent), Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures and that’s pretty much it. I guess you can say that like Jr. Pac-Man, Pac-Man World 1 & 2, while under-popularized in general, have their (avid) viewers (I’m one of them so if TJ&E could get a new game as of recently, then I can’t wait for an N-Sane/Reignited Trilogy-esque remaster of the PMW franchise including a complete version of Pac-Man Adventures/Pac-Man World 3!), but as for every other Pac-Man game, on the other hand, they really, REALLY deserve a lot more popularity.

@@ruffusgoodman4137 At the time people were still very strict about using the phrase "Rogue-like". If it wasn't turn based with ASCII graphics they wouldn't use the term. It wasn't until around 2006-2008 that the term really started gaining traction for other types of gameplay.

My introduction to Toejam and Earl was with the sequel, the 2D platformer (I was always Earl because it was my friend's house and HE got to be Toejam) so I was really shocked when I went back and played the first game, but I totally agree with you. It's just chill. A good fun chill time. And hey dude, that's exactly what this episode was. Thank you for the fun chill time.

I remember playing this when I was much younger, and by goodness, I NEVER reached the end. I had no idea it was randomly generated, so I guess as a kid I kept trying to look for familiar things that didn't exist, every time I replayed it, until it ended up frustrating my youthful brain, and I eventually gave up. Good to know I wasn't COMPLETELY insane, in hindsight! Never would of thought ToeJam and Earl of all things would be one of the progenitors of Roguelikes, but neat to know! Looking forward to the next episode, keep up the great work, Jirard.

I remember renting this as a kid and loving it because of just how weird and offbeat it was...two hip-hop aliens looking for parts of their ship on floating lumps of 'Earth' while being menaced by things like devils, mad dentists, and an ice cream truck. Then they dance with Hula girls, get drunk off rootbeer, and find mystery boxes that can insta-kill if you don't pay money to a guy dressed in a carrot suit who can tell you what's inside. So weird...but so fun (and quite funny too). Thank you for this review.

A simple way to dramatically increase the difficulty of this game is make the carrot guy off limits. Many years later, I was elated to find out that Mac Culkin is a huge fan as well, especially considering he was born two days after me. I don't know the guy irl but always found that to be an awesome coincidence. Anyone who almost shares a birthday with me and loves TJ&E is awesome. True story: around 2000 or 2001, I used to email the creators on the old website about ideas I had for any potential future sequels. Typical stuff a fan might do. They'd reply back. Very awesome people. They said they liked my ideas but said they were too far into the development of TJ&E III: Mission to Earth to add anything. Oh well. I tried!

I only ever played this game on the Sega demo machine at Sears. It never appealed to me much, but this video kinda kicks ass

Love seeing this game in the spotlight - it was one of my favorites back in the days of the Genesis. Oddly, though, I never made the connection of it as a roguelike - at that time, I think I'd just defined the genre by 'ascii-based random adventure games on computer'. Also, that funk remix of Stickerbrush Symphony is amazing. I want that song...

I was a fan of the series since I borrowed this game & the 2nd game from block busters when I was still in elementary. I didn't realize this was a rouge like till this video pointed this out. So glad I got the reboot on the switch.

I played TJ&E so much with my childhood best friend. It’s nearly a perfect two player game. I also brought this game out to play with my kid sister(who’s 20 years younger than me) when she was around 10 or so and she loved it. It was so much fun playing it with her. You definitely need to do a two player play though on one of the channels.

Yes, this is what I need. I played back in the groove and loved it, my mom told me about its existence when I was a lot younger. Now I want another team and earl game this year.

I bet if Sonic hung out with hot chicks, he would be treated like a misogynistic player who’s not worth liking, but if anyone else, including Toejam & Earl (who are awesome with the ladies and in general) did the same thing, they would get a free pass even though for anyone (except for characters that truly deserve hate for doing it with no respect for women like the Flynn Bros from The Kissing Booth franchise or Sam Witwicky from Transformers 1-3 or any guy from teen sitcoms like Drake Parker (Drake & Josh) or Cody Martin (The Suite Life on Deck) or Daniel Miller (Every Witch Way) or Beck Oliver (Victorious) or Mason Greyback (Wizards of Waverly Place), no wonder women didn’t want THEM) else to do it.

@@kieranstark7213 so are you hating on back in the groove. I think it's a fantastic return to form and a possible resurrection of the series.

Absolutely not! That game is awesome! My point is that Sega made both Sonic and TJ&E “in the groove”!

I still have my Mega Drive as it's called here, I bought it for 20 euros. Included like 20 games. It was a steal really. Got games like Streets of Rage 3. Still love playing this game! I hope you're having a great day Jirard! I love your content!
