In this video, we'll look at the PROS and CONS of carrying a knife for self-defense, plus what kind of knife you should use, and how you should use it in a self-defense situation.
AXIAL KNIVES: The knife I'm using in this demonstration is an AXIAL knife called The Dart. It's a matte blue, automatic (switch blade), double-action OTF knife with a 2" tanto blade and blackwash blade finish. That means the blade opens automatically at the press of a button, you can both deploy and retract the blade with the same button (double-action), and the blade comes OUT THE FRONT of the knife (OTF).

A very good book to read is “violence of the mind” the author in this book talks about the legal ramifications he had to go through using a knife in self defense against a thug in his own home and ended up going to jail for it…

I appreciate that. Unfortunately, there can be legal ramifications anytime you use force to defend yourself, even if it's in your own home.

I would only use a knife if I’m being attacked by more then 2 or more attackers. Or if they got a weapons. But if its only one guy who is unarmed. I would just fight back with my bare hands. My cousin used a pocket knife against 6 attackers. He slashed 2 guys and as they bleed they all ran. He goes for the arms shoulders and legs. He didn’t try to kill but to stop the threat.

I've trained in mma for about 3 years, boxing for 2, and bjj on and off for around 6. If it gets to the point in a self defense situation that I need to pull out my knife then I genuinely hope the attacker/attackers doesn't make it. Thank god for Texas, if it were California or New York then you'd probably get in trouble for even defending yourself.
@Daniel_Cooley
@Daniel_Cooley 3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully it never comes to that though. Unless the person is seriously trained, has a weapon of his own, on hard core drugs, or theres 3 or more attacker then I'm pretty confident I won't need a knife.

Yeah exactly…if ur gonna carry a knife..at least know that of course…it’s useful 😂 you wouldn’t be carrying a knife if you didn’t know how to use one….but sometimes people think that just because they have a knife they’re safe….if they have a weapon and they don’t know how to use it….what’s good of having it in the first place….but yeah I’m thinking of moving to Texas 😂

Imo everyone should carry a knife, it's a very useful tool in a pinch for several situations, if you need to cut a seat belt to save yourself or someone else, obviously for emergency self defense & life or death, if a Pitbull attacks, etc... in the state I live in now, I can pretty much carry and conceal any type of knife. For practical reasons I suggest carrying a 3" to 4" knife. Fixed or folder, whatever you prefer.

Great video. You've clearly done your homework in the lethality side of things. Legally speaking I would say that most courts are gonna want you to try less than lethal tactics to start with. I agree that you need that element of surprise and that they should feel it before they see it. However, in a real situation one could put their knife to the attackers throat and keep them at distance and then back away and offer them the chance to walk away. Now you did say the issue with this is that you have to actually be good at knofe fighting. I would say that you have to be good at fighting. Anyone wanting to use a knife for self defense needs to learn hand to hand first. You need to recognize being flanked. You need to know how to stack multiple attackers. There is a lot that goes into defending yourself against more than one person. A knife is a huge help, but it isn't an automatic win my any means. Train daily. At the very least train your draw every day.

well, you SHOULD carry a micro 9mm in a velcroed-in, kydex front pants pocket holster, but if you cannot, carry a double-ended, double edged throwing in front of and behind each hip. Dull the points and edges on the "handle' ends a bit and learn to always grab at the (sheathed) knife from the side. Then you'll have 2 to throw and one in each hand to fight with.

I had occasion to research knife law around the country for a client. Turns out that in almost every jurisdiction, state, local, and federal, any blade that locks or is fixed is seen by the courts as Per Se a dangerous weapon, and without regard to length. That all by itself does not make possession a crime. The things that convert it into a crime to possess are (1) what you do with it and (2) whether the arresting officer testifies that, in his experience and training, you possessed it for an unlawful purpose. Courts almost always defer to the police when they use that talismanic phrase, "in my experience and training." Now about self-defense: The courts truly do not favor the idea of it. They will tell you that the Police are there to protect you and the idea of self-defense is the disfavored "self help." The same courts will tell you (under other circumstances) that the police have no duty to protect you as an individual they are here to protect society and owe you the person no individualized duty. So, if they fail to come to your aid, you don't have a right of action to sue them for failing to do so. At law (in most states), you may not defend yourself with deadly weapons, and the police can just drive on by as you are being murdered. Now, as to what you tell the court when the prosecutor tries to trap you with the obvious question of why you had that particular edged item on your person. NEVER SAY IT IS FOR SELF-DEFENSE. That's the state's case that you were carrying with the intent that it be used for harm. Say for fishing, hunting, your hobby, tie it to your vocation. If the court believes you, that's your get-out-of-jail card.

Boxing has its issues it works really well even against multiple attackers as long as they are not armed and do not have a lot of wrestling experience. It is much easier to learn than the other martial arts but will fail catastrophically if one of them is armed or has grappling experience. Most common thugs are not trained fighters

For legal reasons instead of going for a stab to the opponent’s gut could it also be effective to maybe take a slash on the forearm making them pull back trying to stop the blood instead of stabbing in a way that could be fatal

Yes, I would agree with that. If you feel fairly confident than you can escape the situation by only slashing his arm, that might be a good way to go. But if you're uncertain about whether this guy is going to bury you, I wouldn't play it cute. For first priority should be to survive the situation.

You don't need lethal force in civil defense. All you need is to deter and nothing is better for the purpose than pain control. Inflict as much pain as you need and you are good. I've been doing full contact martial arts for about 6 years and agree with what you are saying about not showing the knife or making any threats. If I had a knife and got in a fight with a person with any level of experience of being violent I can't imagine being able to cut them even once. It would be very easy for them to overwhelm me and take my knife. At least if I grab and try to start stabbing I have a small chance of stabbing them once or twice before they headbutt me and I drop the knife. The odds of me stabbing them at all are still tiny and even if I do manage it it will most likely just enraged them further thou.

As he said, you don't want to lose your knife in a life threatening situation; He punches you once good and you drop it there's a good chance he will use it on you. If you have to deploy your knife with no other option get busy. In many cases a knife can be more lethal than a gun because you're stabbing/slashing and and if done right you'll be cutting into organs and tendons on the arm depending on where you strike. A big thing to avoid trouble is to be aware of your surroundings, don't hang out in dangerous places if possible and the more people around the better. Remember, an assailant does not have your best interest at heart. If you would have to use a knife in a life or death situation don't play games, take em out. It's better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6. The greatest form of self-defense is calling on Christ Jesus. The person wanting to hurt you without being provoked has demons and Jesus Name is more powerful than every demon in hell. Thank you for this video. God bless you. 🙏

Unfortunately “fear of legal ramifications” can be what holds people back from their full potential when defending their own life. Even cops can experience this and die as a result. The quote you gave was my motto many times when I knew I was skirting around the edges of what is legal and what could potentially land me charged with a felony. Fortunately, that never happened. I pulled my knife on several occasions but never had to cut or stab anyone. Most of those I was coming to the defense of someone outnumbered and being stomped. When they saw my considerable blade and I told them to get off of them, they did. After they backed off or ran away, I put it away and helped the injured guy up to his feet. It could have landed me in jail or even prison, but I couldn’t ever stand to see someone ganged up on and getting stomped once they were already down and beaten. So, I don’t really agree with his policy about never showing the blade. Most times, that’s all it takes to diffuse the situation. The important X factor is the aggressors must see in your eyes and demeanor that you are fully committed to using that blade if necessary. Don’t carry it if you aren’t to that point. It’s a close up, bloody, dirty business using a blade on another human being.

I’ve never actually heard of anyone successfully using a knife for self defense. Anytime you hear about a knife fight or see footage of a stabbing it’s always the aggressor with the knife. And think about it… what situation are you really able to legally justify attacking with a knife. Let’s say someone physically attacks you and is unarmed. If you stab them even in “self defense” you’re probably going to jail. You’re going to have a real hard time convincing a jury that you just had to pull that knife on an unarmed person. Second scenario the other person also has a knife. Well you’re both going to slash the hell out of each other and likely both die or be seriously maimed. You’re much better off running away even if you also have a knife. 3rd scenario… your attacker has a gun. Well I hope you can deflect bullets with your trusty knife. The only scenario I can see having a knife as a self defense tool is maybe if a wild animal attacks you like a mountain lion or bear. You’re still much better off with a high caliber pistol in that situation.

I am going to get made fun of by the knife people because I like boxing but I say a knife is the worst self defense tool. It is a deadly weapon but more likely to be used because it will not be seen as being as much of an escalation as a gun. If you use a knife and lethal force was not needed you just opened up a whole can of worms. If you were involved in imperfect self defense and boxed them a jury is not going to look at it quite the same as imperfect self defense using a deadly weapon. I was involved in a self defense incident I had to take a knife away from a drunk who was trying to rob a gas station and took the fight out of him with a couple of hooks to his head. If I grabbed a knife and stabbed him even if I was legally in the right it still would have opened up a big can of worms. The deputies talked to the other customers, me, and the cashier and told me I could get a copy of the report at the sheriffs office on Cypresswood. I never heard anything else about it.
