I have had a few people ask me if the first part of the video was true and if i did spin my crank hub. NO i did not actually spin my crank hub. The intro is a skit just to help convey the level of regret someone could have from not upgrading the crank hub lol.

Not to say anything disrespectful but the crank is forged and also has many holes drilled init for oil flow. Drilling 4 small holes will make absolutely no different to the strength and I would say infact is better because it will be balanced unlike the 2 pin.

I'm about to buy an M2Comp and i will keep it stock power, but do intercooler and catback exhaust only.... so... i will be doing some track days etc.. i think i may drive this to around 60 000km and then upgrade this.. fingers crossed!

I’m in Cali. Paid 1700 labor included with no comebacks. shop out here does 2 crank hubs a day. Did mine in 5 hours. not 25.

I use the CHC with revised crank bolt torque setting.. Not 1 recorded failure with this set up. 😎😊

This was awesome. I wonder if you’re missing a “type of person” between 2 and 3? Not stock. Slightly modified (ie BM3 stage 1). Probably won’t ever track the car but yes to aggressive back road driving. Sounds like same recommendation? 2 pin upgrade?

Also, Yes i totally think it can be broken up a little more and right in between there, there is definitely some more groups you could make but i was mostly just doing a high level over view but yeah. Personally, I’m on the better safe than sorry side of things so i think ultimately if you do any performance mods, or want to drive the car stock but really aggressive, the crank hub fix should be on the list. In my opinion the 2 pin single piece is the way to go unless you’re putting down crazy high number like 750+

I am running hybrids, 600 whp on a stock hub, just to put that out there. Have been for a while now. It is a manual. I wouldn't be putting any of these pinned options on myself.

Awesome video! I just purchased an F82 with the the Crank hub spin and I was wondering what are the chances that my engine is trashed? Yesterday inspected the oil filter and in between the filter I saw some metal shavings. I plan on dropping the subframe and look at the oil pan for more evidence. Any suggestions?

Yeah sigh metal in the oil filter and such it’s not good. Could be chunks of internals or timing chain depending how bad it was spun. Ultimately a shop is gonna make the best call after diagnosing the extent of the damage. Usually there is 2 levels when spinning a crankhub generally. Sometimes the motor locks up and your timing is simply off and that’s the worst of it, you can replace the crankhub and retime the motor. But on the other fence metal shavings means there is damage internally as the metal has to come from somewhere. The engine may be a loss but i hope not! Keep me posted in what you find after dropping the oil pan and such.

8:06 For this 1st group specifically (but for all others as well) I think you're missing a *CRUCIAL* point. Resale value. When it comes time to say goodbye, IMHO it'll be much easier to sell with that documentation in hand to the buyer. And to go back to your point, having it professionally done so there's a paper trail.

I 100% agree with you, but, the loss/difficulty in resell is offset with the savings of 4k avg crank hub cost. It 100% is a huge plus when selling the car to have that already done. It’s a selling point for sure!

If this is the case , how come all of these old people I know with f80 m3s and had them since they first came out , how come they crank hubs never spun? And they do spirited driving and have been for years ! Personally I believe that crank hub issue all fall on driving habits , why I say this ? It’s because I’ve been around these cars since 2015 and I never ever heard about this until KZbin and social media. Not to say it doesn’t happen , it’s just that I’ve never seen this issue until KZbin etc. This is why I believe this is based on bad driving habits in my opinion.

That is actually an m240i. This belong to a friend who has a very heavily modified m240i. Video was used as just representation of that style of owner that i was talking about as many of the other videos were.

Just depends what the piece of mind is worth to you. A crank hub fix ensures you don’t run into issues that some come across on fully stock motors. You could have zero issues with a stock motor, chances are increased with even an ECU tune, but a new motor is upwards of 8k+. So it just depends what the piece of mind at 4k for the average crank hub is worth

120,000 miles no crank hub fix... over exaggerated full 100octane tune and bolt ons... 40,60 80 rolls all the time plus heavy downshifts

All depends on your power numbers. We have seen 1000+Hp running 2 pins with no issues. But i also know 4 holes in your crank is a lot of drilling and i just don’t feel it’s safer drilling that much into your crank

A damn time bomb..and some say fix it before catastrophe happens..wtf seriusly? It ain't a 1000 euro fix it's a 5k fix..and when 8t brakes can be a 20k...its sending buyers to merc area or B58-s58 models...and bmw rod has nothing to do with tuning or stock..its a factory fault ..or its cause of that gearbox rapid change in gears

I wouldn’t say it is sending people to merc because merc doesn’t have any world of tuning and performance ranges as BMW with custom tuning and custom fabrication. S58 maybe because it so far does not have a factory fault like almost all motors do of some kind, but it is still relatively new. The s58 upcharge is also substantially higher than a 5k crank hub and then some, a massive difference in price so not very comparable. The b58 isn’t comparable either because you can’t make high high level of power out of b58 without more than 5k invested in internals and supporting parts, also, b58 is not a M power plant, so you lose on all the other track/handling benefits you get from an M car. After crankhub, s55 can withstand 700whp without having to touch any internals. B58 not so much. S58 so far is fairing to be a top tier design but only time will tell.

@@UnworthyMotors very well said..but as a buyer I was talking ..if you put that extra money you need to fix rod over m4 price you change category and I can buy something better..I drove m4 and a c63 amg both remapped..C63 feels a way more expensive car..m4 and m3 already feel and look like a boy racer while used m4 is the same price as a 2013 m6 or m5..no one can live with u fix rod bearing in his head..the pull and feeling inside c63 is wold different vs m4...m4 reminds me Nissan Silvia back in the day...and the idiotic marketing of bmw "better track car" is big BS when you are looking for a car cause no one will have his wife and take turns at 240km..we all buy the pull not the cornering ..on normal roads all of them have scary limits..you won't go till there anyways

@@commantrosexetlos4700 i totally see your point. You won’t have your wife driving a track car and get any benefit out of it. Mercedes will always be a more luxury and feel more expensive. BMW M cars are made with performance front of mind. Regardless of where you use it, M4 is built to perform and handle, and at 45-50k there isn’t any other cars in the same price range that will perform a wide power band, AND be able to hit mountain roads like it’s on rails, not counting the ones who go to the track. I get use out of the handling no matter where i go, back roads as well as mountain roads. City use is not something i would ever buy a bmw for. I mostly drive backroads and mountains. A daily driver, for the city, i would get a Mercedes all day
