So it's better to have a dummy round as your last round

not necessarily that could be a pretty big hassle, particularly in a competion or even defensive setting, and most firearms will lock the action back on the last round anyway. rimfire can handle a certain amount of dry fire... say if you did it a handful of times a year. but repeatedly doing it over and over again, say while you are doing training drills can quickly cause issues.

@@CloverTac I live in the country and we have a massive coyote, raccoon, and possum problem so I need something with a bigger mag that doesn't cost that much but what if I run out of ammo and I forget I'm out and charge the bolt without thinking is there anything to tell me not to pull the trigger like a big orange flag or something that says you're out reload

i sorta get what you are saying... attention and awareness are a huge part of firearm safety and use. so you should be focused more on those things than trying to find a way to carelessly just rack and pull triggers, just my two cents there. the idea you mention of using a snap cap could work, but a little hesitation with paying attention would be less time spend than having to rack out a snap cap and reload. and again, most will lock the bolt back, keeping you from being able to pull the trigger once the magazine is empty. so isn't really that big of an issue. guess what i am saying, i think you are maybe overhtinking things quite a bit here.

I have actually experienced everything you mentioned with my first handgun I had as a teenager in East Texas. I was given a high standard Sentinel model 9 shot .22 revolver. I dry fired it and flicked the cylinder closed repeated times. The chambers became difficult to load and extract and from flicking the cylinder closed the revolver got out of time. It was actually a very nice revolver but my abuse ruined it.

My Remington 550-1 started having trouble ejecting, due to this. I was new to firearms and dry fired it a lot of times in succession and payed the price. Learned my lesson.

if you can find one of those chamber irons, might try that and see if it helps

Yes, I agree with you on dry-firing on modern 22lr is OK. I wouldn't do it a 1000 times to break-in a pistol.

not a rimfire, but I had problems with a CZ75D. I later found out that dry firing CZ75 models can damage the firing pin retainer pin. Cheap to replace, but I'm glad it was just a range toy rather than my carry gun.

yeah, whole different type of damage and all with a centerfire but it can happen

I use snap caps most the time in my cz but not always. After reading this comment i looked it up and lots of forum people say not to dry fire cz's without caps. better safe than sorry I'll use them everytime now

Hi. I do dry fire my Ruger Competition but not often. Ruger says it’s ok so; so far - so good. However, I have a SW Model 41 Performance Center and I try to exclusively use snap caps. My question to you sir… I have “accidentally” dry fired my Model 41 a few times. Will a single dry fire damage the firearm? Thanks… Great channel 👍

so regardless of what a company says, by the nature of a rimfire, damage can happen... so just be careful. excessive dry fire in any case is not good. can one time do damage, sure, but it is not likely. a little jealous of the 41, always had one of those on my wish list BUT that may be changing soon, currently got my eye on one in the LGS.

How many dry fires does it normally take to damage something? I just bought a .22 rifle and have dry fired it probably close to 20 times before I knew it was bad for it tho I do not know if anything is damaged yet.

hard to say, there is no written rule, that is why it is very important to not do it anymore than you absolutely have to. some dry firing just has to be done, no way around it. you will notice the marks on the chamber face or breech face so just keep an eye on that and again don't do it anymore than you have to and you will probably be ok.

I dry fire mine all the time, no deform on the firing pin but does have a little dent on the chamber, bad habit seriously, but I do have a laser sight sight so at time I stick it in there and load a live round in with finger off the trigger and safety on, I do that just to see if it will extract the round, dumb I know but with a lot of safety measure Gun I have is a marlin model 60, I do have a few spent case around so ima see if it's gonna give it a light strike or enough strike, not sure is snap cap will tell tho

Is it okay to dry fire a hk416 22lr

i would never recommend dry firing any rimfire. as explained in this video, is has less to do with the firearm and almost everything to do with the cartridge itself.

Every time you run out of ammunition in your rimfire the last click is a dry fire. So that is one dry fire per mag or tube. If you shoot a lot of rounds that's a lot of dry fires. Go figure.

count and don't pull the trigger if it is empty.... you are right, it is going to happen, wished they still made the 22lr chamber irons but dont think rhey do

Dang, I never really considered that. I definitely need to start counting rounds. Recently picked up a ruger 22 AR platform. Problem ran about 15-20 mags through it. I sure hope no damage has been done.
