Should You Ever Fire Warning Shots?

This week we consider the idea of warning shots. Are they a good idea? Are they safe? Are they legal? Should you ever fire warning shots? We will look at two cases of warning shots being used in the state of Ohio, involving shooters Michael Rulli and Kelly Rulli as well as Tyler Wilson.

Great video, Buckeye! Ruli's statement of 15 yards sounds much more plausible than Wilson's version of several hundred yards, because no sane person would shoot a handgun at that distance... other than Bob Munden... and sadly, Munden is no longer with us. Ruli should have called the police and not let his wife leave their house, methinks.

Thank you, this is very interesting & informative. Even in cut-n-dried cases, where the conclusion seems apparent to any reasonable person, much depends on the prosecutor, & the compentcy of the defense attorney. I think many people would be surprised how often plea bargain agreements are pursued over actual justice. OTOH a DA might decide a case is the "landmark" case they’ve been looking for.

It almost always comes down to the motivations of an elected official who needs to appear tough on crime. Scary.

In my opinion if the sight of a gun doesn't scare your "attacker" then it doesn't seem likely that firing a warning shot will scare them.

Excellent advice. I think warning shots used in movies and TV shows have made it look like a good idea. You make it clear that warning shots are never a good idea.
