Should You Get a Master's Degree? (For Mechanical Engineers)

After a getting a bachelor’s in ME, I got a mediocre job out of college. I went back on the company’s dime and got my masters in ME. After I finished I got a much higher paying and prestigious job because of that. Definitely would get it done.

My view is one from a country where money for school doesn't matter, so keep that in mind when reading my input. If you want a masters degree for the title, I'd recommend you take a masters in your engineering field and not management. If you want a masters degree for the salary or just to have a degree (there's a difference) then go into management. I want to say that if you're a decent human being, wanting a degree just for the title is ok. I am like that. I'm also interested in the field it self, but I'd lie if I said that the title didn't have anything to say in me deciding to get a masters. Now if you are like this, it's a problem if you're not interested in the work as well as the title. The reason is that it requires work to get into a masters. If you're aware of that and prepared to lay down the work, I say you go get that degree. Don't listen to those saying "Oh, but the years you spend studying, I work and earn money" or "The degree doesn't matter, it's a waste", cause 1: Yes, but you'll be a-ok having your salary after you get your degree. Doesn't matter if you buy a house a couple of years later than the others. 2: If it matters to you, it matters.

I was always told that if you’re paying for a masters degree then you’re doing it wrong. Graduate Programs are paid programs, albeit not that much, usually 20-30k. You can also apply for grants to get funded. Companies do sponsorships but it’s not as common as it used to be.

MBAs and Systems Engineering degrees are a waste of money and time. At my workplace we were talking about them and they are mentioned as if it's not even a real credential. In fact the engineers who did have them who I was talking to actually stated they wished they had a Masters in more engineering. THIS is what commands respect among engineers. Besides, if you are trying to find work as an engineer, isn't being respected by OTHER engineers critical in your career development??? MBAs are a relic of the 80s. Nobody respects them anymore. They are too common. You can BUY one online for 10k. Bottom line is that you don't actually LEARN anything in those programs. One is fluff the other is BS...

You can’t command respect, and degrees certainly don’t earn you “respect.” It may impress a couple of people, and maybe some rookies on the field, but once you’re there long enough, it’s the work you do that makes a difference; how you communicate, how you behave, the questions you ask, the opinions you give, how you treat and help others, and perspectives you’re able to provide that really set you apart and lead to “respect.” But I see what you’re saying. The type of degree will depend on what you want to do. MBA and systems, although general, usually “check the box” when going up the business corporate ladder. I would get either ONLY if the position I want to get to requires it. But for someone who wants to do research or engineering specific and technical work, where expertise is needed, yes, an MS in an engineering field will most likely be helpful. In the end, I suggest people actually be sure they need a masters and not just get one for the sake of getting one (specially if you’ll be borrowing or spending your own money to pay for it).

Not sure honestly, I would check a German website. I live in the USA. Your salary matters up to a point. You also have to see your expenses. Don't ever let your expenses be higher than your salary if you can control it.

I’ll be real, engineering is an iffy career field. I needed work and there was none as a Chem E that was long term, long story short I went back to school for nursing, work is... At this current moment, and given the circumstances, it’s basically guaranteed as long as you don’t shoot someone and dare I say it the money is ALOT better. No pun intended but DO your homework before you decide to go into STEM.

To make things clear for people reading this comment, I don't talk about what it's like to have a Masters, or the Masters program itself. I help people think about the WHY behind their decision to get one, what type of Masters I've seen engineers get (after nine years on the field), and different ways they can get it paid for. Never get a degree without knowing how it will help you advance your in your journey.

This is a bad decision, after all M.Sc won't make you a superman.. just will make you a bit more advanced in your field.. We must respect everyone.. Honestly me as Mechanical Engineer i respect Mechanical Technicians as well the professors in Mechanical Engineering department. This what our religion and GOD teached us. Depending on geographically where you are, starting salaries are in the mid 60's right now. Obviously this varies depending on the company, the position responsibilities and the field. But, for entry level design, manufacturing or process engineer, I'd be looking for about 65k/yr starting. If you're looking at a contracting gig, you'd probably land in the $33-34/hr because they likely won't provide benefits

Vaspher honestly, if it’s free, and you can afford the time (assuming there are no people depending on you), I would just get it over with. I never got an MS because 1) I had to pay for it myself, 2) I wanted to start making money, 3) once I got a job, and had clearer goals in the future, I realized that I don’t need it for what I want to do in the future. But I would have gone for it had it been free.
