For maths only 4 marks from next grade .. what do you recommend 😊

Hi. For essay-based subjects like history or English, do you know any reason why examiners might mark incorrectly? I am going to get a remark but I honestly don’t understand why I was given such a low mark compared to how my answers are (looking at the scripts) and the mark scheme?
@Primrose_Kitten2 ай бұрын
These subjects can be very subjective but generally examiners are very well trained in it and can get frozen out of marking if repeatedly incorrect. I'd say it's rare that they'd be REALLY FAR off but it's possible for there to be a few marks not awarded (or awarded too generously) in English because where one person may award for a specific point, another might not award for it.

For history, the mark scheme for the top band is between 17-20 marks. What would happen if an examiner marked you at 17/20 for a question but then when getting a script back your teacher said that it should be 18/20 not 17/20? It would fall into the same band according to the mark scheme but one mark would make a difference since I’m one mark off an A*. Since history is subjective, how would it be decided if the answer was worth 17 or 18 marks/20?

So, I can only speak from an English perspective as i've not marked for History, but feel they're quite similar. I've marked for AQA GCSE and it's easy to see why people might award a mark where others might not. It could be that one person thought the communication was really clear but someone else may have missed the point. Actually, in the creative writing section, two people mark it to help combat this. I'm not so sure for History but this is where it would be important for your teacher to request the paper back to have a second opinion anyway! I'd say though that an A is still an EXCELLENT grade and unless it's impacting your entry somewhere, i'd be very proud of that.

@@Primrose_Kitten for A-level English/History, do examiners mark entire papers so each of my papers will have been marked by one person; or do they only mark one question per paper so one of my papers will have been marked by multiple examiners?
@Primrose_Kitten2 ай бұрын
So i've only ever marked GCSE personally but i can't see this being any different because it helps to reduce bias. E.g. if you wrote a really good question 2, it might affect the examiner's judgement for q3 because they think you deserved more there too. So for that reason, examiners only mark individual questions so yes, multiple examiners.

When you have your A-levels remarked, does one examiner look over all your papers for a subject or do multiple examiners remark it? Also, technically speaking, could a remark go wrong again and could you remark it a second time?
@Primrose_Kitten2 ай бұрын
One person will remark it, and grades can go down after a remark

I got a D in alevel English language however to get a D you needed 130 marks this year (out of 500) versus 286 for a C. I scored 179 and I’m so unsure of what to do because whilst I could get onto a university course I want to do next year with that and my other grades, I don’t want that grade to affect my likelihood of getting into an apprenticeship/course in the future. If anyone has any advice I’d be so grateful!

My English teacher is requesting my paper back soon. I panicked, got super anxious and had to apply for special consideration after my first English paper because invigilators kept talking to me in the middle of the exam, standing over me and didn’t know how long my extra time was. I’m just scared in case I apply for a remark and it comes back lower than before or doesn’t reach a C.

Hi lovely! Sorry to hear it was rough for you. See what your teacher says regarding a remark. Did you say you're not starting uni this September?

I’m 6 marks off in my geography paper from an A. Since it’s a pretty high amount I’m not sure if it’s even worth considering?
@Primrose_Kitten2 ай бұрын
I'm no Geog expert so definitely contact your teacher ASAP to get their opinion. I was always of the thinking that Geog papers are very factual so unlikely to go up massively, but you never know with the essay-based questions for example!!

I was 1 mark off an A* in my Physics A-level do you think the remark has a high chance of changing things? Cause my physics board is WJEC so it has this comprehension thing on one of the papers for 20 marks and overall quite a few wordy questions
@Primrose_Kitten2 ай бұрын
Hi! Definitely worth exploring! You should ask your teachers/exams officer to check over it to see if they spot any errors though - that might give you an idea of whether it's worth the cost. If it doesn't affect you though, an A is still a fantastic grade and if going up to A* doesn't change anything, you can still be happy!

I’m 3 marks away from an A. Is it worth getting a remark? I’m 30 marks clear of a B right now.
@Primrose_Kitten2 ай бұрын
Hi @aliraza-yp9bx its a tough decision, do you need a higher grade to get on to a course? if yes then you might want a remark. If you don't need to get higher grades then try and be happy with the ones you have. When remarking grades can go down as well as up and you have to accept the new grade, remarks are also expensive. and while if your grade changes you get your money back, there is no guarantee that will happen. Essay subjects like English are more likely to change, as they are more based on the opinion of the examiners, and subjects like maths and science are less likely to change. Edexcel is offering access to your papers for free, so a teacher can look at them and decide if you got a fair mark, and then you can discuss with them if you need a remark. I’m 2 marks from an A which I need for my course and I don’t think I’ll drop below a B. If I do get a remark should I get my worst paper remarked ?
@Primrose_Kitten2 ай бұрын
Depending on the exam board, your centre can request the scripts back for free (more allow this for free nowadays than previously) so get teachers to look through them to see if it's worth a remark and which one would be better to send. If your place depends on it though, exam boards like AQA suggest that you go straight for a priority review of marking because it's a process that needs to be done quickly: www.aqa.org.uk/exams-administration/after-results/post-results/copy-of-marked-paper
